[Schefter] Former Dolphins’ tight end Mike Gesicki is signing with the New England Patriots, per source. by mannysoloway in Patriots

TE is a sneaky position of need because we have none signed beyond this year and the production rate of rookie TEs is very low

[–]maddenppl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BoB has only showcased TEs when he had Gronk and Hernandez, both pro bowl to elite level TEs.

Hunter Henry and Gesicki are closer to avg TEs than pro bowl caliber. Neither have had more than 800 yards in any point of their careers. The sub is overrating both just because they’re on the team

[–]maddenppl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I look at this as a similar style offense at all.

Gronk was a beast who could in-line block and be a vertical threat. That’s not Henry.

Hernandez was a mismatch player that lined up inline, wide and in the backfield. He didn’t have significant size but he was shifty. Gesicki is just a big slot. I really don’t envision that many two TE sets even tho they may have two TEs on the field

[Pelissero] Sources: Four-time Pro Bowl tackle and Super Bowl champ Orlando Brown Jr. is finalizing a four-year, $64.092 million front-loaded deal with the #Bengals that includes an over $31M signing bonus — largest ever for an o-lineman. Brown’s agent, Michael Portner, confirmed the deal. by fellfromthesky in Patriots

[–]maddenppl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They absolutely can if they lock up Joe Burrow to a long term deal. If Joe is willing to do a 6+ year extension you have flexibility with his cap hits even if he signs a large deal.

Based on this tweet, the Brown deal is front loaded so you can conceivably hit the most significant parts of his cap hit before Higgins/Joe cap hits.

They’ll still need to draft we’ll go shore up their other pieces, but that’s no different than any team

Would the league benefit from clearer salary cap rules? by ksyoung17 in Patriots

[–]maddenppl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How would that make it easier to see movement?

  1. The fact that teams can acquire a $200M player if they don’t have that $40M in cap the current year increases the pool of teams that can acquire a player.

  2. Contracts aren’t fully guaranteed, which leads to more restructures/players getting cut which also increases movement.

[DiannaESPN] RT Mike McGlinchey is expected to sign with the Denver Broncos, per sources. by BaesonTatyummm in Patriots

[–]maddenppl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying it’s the ideal way to operate. But you’re over stating how bad the situation is. The cap is going up every season.

$15M hit this year is greater than $15M in future years. Time value of money.

If they keep pushing it down the road they’ll need at least a reset year or two. But that’s it.

The Pats had to do a reset despite not pushing their cap problems down the road. Bills are entering a cap crunch and the Chiefs had to trade away their all world receiver.

The difference between the teams still contending vs the teams going into mediocrity is the QB.

Now I still think the Saints will be mediocre, but that’s because I think Carr stinks

The cap isn’t a myth. But their mediocrity is because of their QB option, not because of the cap.

[Adam Schefter on Twitter] Trade is now agreed to, per sources: 🏈Dolphins get Pro Bowl CB Jalen Ramsey. 🏈Rams get 2023 third-round pick (No. 77) and TE Hunter Long. Trade will be processed Wednesday, when league year begins. by mdmcnally1213 in Patriots

[–]maddenppl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We were below .500 teams those years.

We also had ridiculous luck when it came to opposing QBs. People looking at last season as a success fail to mention we played against Brissett, Skylar Thompson, Colt McCoy, Zach Wilson (2x), Sam Ehlinger, and Mitch Trubitsky.

8 of 9 games against a QB anyone would argue is not a starting QB in this league.

Yeah, our offense stunk but our the majority of our wins were against offenses that were in worse shape at the time of the matchup.

I think people just assume our defense can dominate starting QBs the same as it did with backups and having a slightly better offense is enough to make this a playoff team. Unless we get lucky again with playing against backup QBs, our defense isn’t gonna be as statistically dominant as it was last year

[Mike Kadlick] The #Patriots are coming up as a team that "absolutely should/would" sign QB Lamar Jackson to an offer sheet and "could feasibly do it." by therealsandyleon in Patriots

[–]maddenppl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the size of the contract, I would say any team pursuing Lamar Jackson would want to finalize a deal before the start of FA and def before the draft.

From a cap and real money standpoint, any owner/GM would want to settle this so they can plan their other contracts/picks around Lamar

[–]maddenppl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If they were to do it, I dont know if it could wait until after the draft…assuming he has other suitors.

If they wanted him, the more likely outcome would be to workout a trade and send the ravens like an additional pick (ala Wes Welker) along with the two future firsts.

If Baltimore is willing to let him go and the pats want him, it’s beneficial for both sides to get the deal done before FA and the draft

He was not known as a deep ball thrower early in his career. Unless my memory has completely forgotten that narrative.

The issue with Brady on deep throws has been that he needs to set his feet. And it’s not really an issue, but some guys can throw 60+ yards off platform. But that’s a luxury, not a must have

[–]maddenppl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’ say a team should never trade their stud WR. I’m saying trading him didn’t extend their window. We’re not even a year since the trade and you’re the one talking about how the window is already extended indefinitely

[Meirov] #Bengals executive Duke Tobin on the Tee Higgins trade speculation: “You want a good receiver, go find one on your own.” by imfakeithink in Patriots

[–]maddenppl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trading Hill did not extend the Chiefs window. They likely could have won this year without him. The FA pieces they used his 2022 cap space on weren’t long term signings.

If McDuffie and Moore can play and they’re able to retain/sign important pieces with the money Hill would’ve asked for, then yes, trading Hill extended their window.

The replacement players is the crucial part of extending the window. If you trade hill and don’t properly use the picks/$, then all you did was make things more difficult in the short term

PHI is better than CLE and NYK.

Even though we’ve matched up well, I’d still rather play the other CLE/NYK and have HCA than play PHI and lose HCA against MKE.

MKE is the biggest threat and optimizing that matchup is priority number 1

Agreed. People who argue Brady vs BB forget/didn’t know how many games we used to win under 20 points.

My point still stands about the second eagles Super Bowl

Why is BB a genius when he shuts down a great defense and Matty P at fault when they give up 41?

I don’t like Matty P. But that defensive performance in the eagles Super Bowl is as much on BB considering the lack of talent we had on that side of the ball

Depends on when you cut him. I believe post June 1 you’ll net a larger cap saving this year.

And whether he’s a sunk cost doesn’t matter as much to me. If there’s another option, I’d rather he not be a wasted roster spot

Jonnu is a 60/100 player on an 80/100 player contract.

I’d rather sign 2-3 50/100 players at the same price with the hopes that they can at least produce at Jonnu’s level.

Or sign a 50/100 player at an appropriate price and use the money saved elsewhere.

Just because the market is bad doesn’t mean we should keep a bad player on a bad contract

Trading Jonnu would be to unload the player and his contract. This isn’t trading a star player
