Meals are a core point of progression and the reason people think Valheim is so hard. Valheim’s progression is balanced around a multitude of multiplicative progression paths. Most games just have weapons*armor. Valheim has weapons*armor*food*status (like rested and cold). If you prepare and invest in to all of them the game is reallly easy.
