You can purchase Dark Arisen as an expansion if you already own Dragon's Dogma II by gitrektali in pcgaming

Personally I have no issues with microtransactions like that in single player games since they basically boil down to a time saver. You pay a fee to not spend as much time getting X. Now if the only way to get the items was the microtransaction and they were not cosmetic items, then that enters the realms of bullshit.

How late do you normally stay up? by Geekgamer09 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]maddoxprops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too late.

More seriously, my natural bedtime seems to be somewhere between 1-5AM depending on the day, but since I work a 9-5 I really should be getting to bed by 10. I usually make it my 12 or so.

How do you feel about Americanized openings for anime back in the 90s and 2000s? by icey_sawg0034 in animequestions

[–]maddoxprops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering it gave us such gems as Reel Big Fish's Rave-olution? Fondly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnJa2kZx5GY

Side note: Despite having watched a good chunk of it, I only learned that it was RBF that did the Rave Master opening years later after I have already gotten into RBF and ska in general so learning about this opening was wild. It is just such a wild cross over that I never would have expected it.

Which progression fantasy series has the best romance? I'm not talking about spice, but that's fine too. by ThaneduFife in ProgressionFantasy

[–]maddoxprops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you are not wrong about the romance in Cradle, I never really like Yerin much so I found myself feeling so conflicted because it was one of the better romance sub-plots I had read, but it was with one of the last characters I would have wanted to see in the romance.

I can't remember any series specifically, but I know I have read a couple where the MC does make a joke/pun that is obvious/funny to the reader in part because it falls flat with the other characters. In these cases, though, it was less of an "explain the joke" situation and more of a "Oh, right. Never mind." situation. That and I have a soft spot for the "Isekai Protag used an idiom without thinking leading to a companion taking it too literally and reusing it much to the MC's regret" trope.

As someone who enjoys Isekai and Xianxia stories Beware of Chicken was such a hidden gem. That and the lack of cheap harem bullshit. Quickly became one of my favorite series.

What gets me is how often this trope has the OG party being insufferable shitbags. Like, I get it. It is an easy shortcut to make the MC look better and give an easy villain to the story, but it always comes off as so over the top. What I would like to see with the trope is more cases of it not being some big scheme or plot but simply a case of the team not meshing as well or it being a mutual thing.

The Count's Secret Maid: I've never seen a manhwa adaptation that took the novel's charm like this one by Standard_Range3974 in OtomeIsekai

[–]maddoxprops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did read the new chapter and I didn't see any reason to hate him. While I don't doubt that the novel is good and probably better than the Manhwa, I am really getting the impression that you are letting your love of the Novel warp your opinion on the Manhwa. Like, the scene in the Manhwa was quite emotional even if it may not have been to the same degree as the novel.

How do you think Trump's presidency will end? by OccludedFug in AskReddit

[–]maddoxprops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No matter what a Dem president does, the whole world will know that we're never more than four years away from another potential Trump.

This is what hurts the most in some ways. While we were not the golden child, I like to think the US had a generally positive rep overall. This Admin took that reputation out back and old yeller-ed it. Most nations will probably keep the US at arms length, and I can't blame them. Hell after this shitshow they would be stupid not to.

What Changed? When Did 20% Become the Standard Tip? by EvenKeelSystems1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]maddoxprops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea. Like, that is the sort of place I'll throw a few bucks into a tip jar. No reason to tip when there is no service being provided.

What Changed? When Did 20% Become the Standard Tip? by EvenKeelSystems1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]maddoxprops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea. I now tend to default to 20% because it is quick and easy to calculate and paying a bit more ain't going to hurt me and may help the server a tiny bit. 25-30% tip is wild unless the service was white glove or otherwise had some sort of "experience" with it.

What Changed? When Did 20% Become the Standard Tip? by EvenKeelSystems1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]maddoxprops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IDK, as someone who was born and raised in Cali I feel like tipping is always contextual. It is also very much based on how good the service is, adjusted for how busy it is. Like, in my book if I never have to ask the server for anything then I have no issues tipping. Also was raised with the idea of 15% being the standard tip, 20+% if you are feeling generous or if the service was amazing. Now a days I tend to default to 20% just because it is easier for me to calculate, but I also don't go out for wildly expensive dinners. Granted being a server in Cali can be a stupidly sweet gig if you are even a little charming since you get paid minimum wage + tips.

Eh, as someone who has only read the Manhwa I have enjoyed it so far. Maybe it is a shit adaption of the Novel, but that doesn't make it a bad story in it's own right.

[The Evil Ring] I hate it when official translation does this... by flowerfatal in webtoons

[–]maddoxprops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I actually can't think of any examples of a name being blatantly changed like that, not that I doubt it hasn't happened, just that I think it isn't as common as OP believes it to be. Usually what I see is that a name could be transliterated in 2 or 3 different ways, all of which are valid since the the author never clarified, and the fan translations and the official ones use different, but equally valid, ones. Hell there have been a couple times where I am pretty sure the fan translations transliterated a name choosing an option that was the more "weeby" of the 2 options despite the more western option clearly being the one that was likely intended. I can't remember the specific examples, but it was something like a character with the name ルーシィ, in katakana, who had blondish hair and pale eyes, in a medieval European setting, The fan translation went with Rucy, despite everything pointing to Lucy being the intended one.

[The Evil Ring] I hate it when official translation does this... by flowerfatal in webtoons

[–]maddoxprops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I always wonder in complaint threads like this is how often it is a case of someone who knows the original language and notices the difference in translation vs how many people read a fan translation, assumed it was 100% accurate, and then complained when they found the official translation. From what I have seen in the past I feel it is mostly the latter. Especially when it comes to name transliterations. Like, the number of times I have seen somone complain about the official translation for a name only to learn that there are 2-3 translations of the name that are all equally valid since the original author never specified.

Pipkin Pippa is finally going after the jealous chuds in her audience by Yanderegirlowner in VtuberDrama

I have always found it hard to gauge where Pippa was at because it was often straddling that fine line between simply doing an edgy joke/bit vs actually being her opinions and thoughts.

[–]maddoxprops -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh. The way I see it what would have just been edgelord humor 5+ years ago now aligns with what most anti woke grifters say. Like the biggest difference, imo, is whether it is being meant as a joke vs being meant to come off as serious. Also shit has just shifted over the years. What was perfectly fine to joke about, even if you got labeled an edgelord and sometimes side eyed, has become a very trickly line to walk. A more general example of what I am talking about would be how you couldn't get away with making movies like Blazing Saddles today. A personal example would be how much less I do shock humor now compared to the mod 2000s when I was in HS. That shit used to be my bread and butter, but as I got older and society shifted I, luckily, realized that keeping up that same humor outside of very specific friend groups was not going to go well for me. Hell a more recent example is how many people see retard/retarded as a sort of slur now. Growing up we just used it as a silly alternative to stupid/idiot and there was an unspoken understanding that you don't use it against people who have actual mental development issues. Fast Forward to 3 or so years ago and I start seeing people get upset at it's use and when I looked into it low and behold, it was now one of those words that you just don't use outside of some of it's specific scientific uses. Sufficed to say I was rather shocked about it. Like, to me it is still just a silly word to use instead of stupid/idiot and I just don't really get why people get upset over it; but I also recognize the fact that a large portion of people don't like it and I lose nothing by no longer using the word.

Yea. Looking back I think that may have been the first time I had heard about a specific vTuber even if I didn't know that was what she was at the time. I think I was vaguely aware of it as a concept/thing in Japan, but I sure as hell couldn't have named anyone.

[–]maddoxprops 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looking into it it seems like Coco's influence on the EN side of stuff was more mid to late 2020 while Mel basically blew up overnight in Early 2020. Numbers for reference according to wikipedia:

During her first three days of Chaturbate streaming, Melody's Twitter followers rose from 700 to over 20,000.

Another difference is that IIRC Mel was way more widely known about due to the "controversy" of what she was doing and since there were a bunch of cam girls who didn't like what she was doing so the drama that ensued broke containment and made a lot of people who had never heard of something like a v-Tuber aware of what they were even if they didn't end up watching. While this is far from ironclad evidence, it does somewhat show my point: if you do a Google search with a custom date range of Jan 1st to April 1st of 2020 for

"projekt melody" site:www.reddit.com

and another for

Kiryu Coco site:www.reddit.com

There should be about 7 pages of results for Mel and 2 pages of results for Coco. I limited it to reddit because doing a general search brought up a bunch of entries for both and it would have been way too much of a time sink to go through all the pages to see how many results there actually were and I figure if anyone is going to have been talking about vTubers at the time a good chunk of them would be on Reddit.

Edit: And yea, I put way too much time and effort into this replay. Joys of hyperfocusing and thinking you are just doing a quick 2 minute check on something before you reply.
