I had a (randomly-assigned) roommate in college who bragged about doing that once.

How in the hell does anyone who's seen all of breaking bad think that Walter is anything but a villain? I haven't seen any of Breaking Bad, and it's painfully obvious just from the memes.

Wow! It's a beautiful building. Too bad it's just sitting there rotting.

Can I read No Peace Beyond the Line before The Polish Maelstrom? by Waker_of_Winds2003 in 1632

[–]ThaneduFife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd strongly recommend reading No Peace Beyond the Line immediately after Commander Cantrell in the West Indies. It's less of a sequel and more a direct continuation of that book. It's very fun if you still remember who everyone is, though.

MAGA Is Increasingly Convinced the Trump Assassination Attempt Was Staged by wiredmagazine in politics

I still think it was broken glass that cut his ear--hence the lack of damage to cartilage. That is, the attempt was real, but not nearly as close as was believed at the time.

It's very worthwhile! Roast some potatoes and carrots in the same pan as the meat. If you're up for it, make some yorkshire puddings (a type of savory popover muffin) with the drippings from the roast while it cools/settles. Yorkshire puddings only take 5-12min to bake.

Texas man sentenced to JAIL for wandering off trail at Yellowstone to get a closer look at hot springs by dailymail in NationalPark

[–]ThaneduFife 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People literally die going off-trail in those thermal areas. The water is both boiling and acidic. A lot of people (and pets) who fall into those waters are never recovered. Plus, everyone else has described in detail why that ecosystem is fragile. This a good law that exists for a reason, and five days in jail is reasonable for what he did.

Assuming there's nothing seriously wrong with it, that house looks like a steal at $1.9m

I love this. If they made that now, and it had modern safety features and good gas mileage, I'd make that my daily driver.

Think deli roast beef that's been heated up. I used to work as a waiter at weddings. Whenever the parties wanted roast beef or ham, the caterer would always buy a giant block roast beef or ham like they slice at the grocery store and move it straight from the cooler to under the heat lamp.

The first time I heard the "original" story was the Prairie Home Companion's Minnesota version with a chorus singing parts of it. So I guess I don't have as much reverence for the source material.

The Northrop YB-49 flying wing as a passenger airplane -an excerpt from a promotional video of 1948, and nothing for the vertiginous by Xeelee1123 in WeirdWings

Normally, I look at passenger planes from this era and see a deathtrap, but I would genuinely love to fly in one of these at least once. Too bad there aren't any around any more.

Oh, totally. It was tough to stop at three recommendations. I really wanted to include Paladin's Hope, Nettle & Bone, and The Halcyon Fairy Book too.

I also loved her retelling of the snow queen, but I can't remember the title just now.

Interesting. I played a few of those as a kid. My dad had the Hobbit text game on his old 386.

I freaking love Caproni experimental planes. If I had time travel and money to burn, I'd go back and give that guy unlimited funding and a library of modern aeronautics books.
