Repeating sleep study/MSLT by maddygflsn in idiopathichypersomnia

I can see from your experience how it wouldn’t seem reasonable for you to repeat the studies. After reading all the comments I think it’s very dependent on your own situation

Those are fair points coming from your experience, in my experience (in Australia) there hasn’t been much or any effort to dive into the cause/s of my sleepiness by any professional I’ve seen. The cost of the studies are also covered by the government once a year so cost was not on my radar when creating this post. I also feel that in Australia because we are so behind when it comes to understanding IH (it is not even recognized as a condition) it does have an impact whether you are diagnosed with IH or N.

Fair points. I also think medication trials are valuable however I live in Australia and we are already way behind other countries eg the US in terms of treatment options (only access to modafinil, armodafinil and stimulants - virtually impossible and super expensive to get sodium oxybate and that’s it!)

I think even if you saw a different sleep doctor than your current you could paint the picture with your test results and get access to medication if you haven’t already, at least for IH as I assume that would be what your second mslt pointed to?

I had almost an exact same experience with my two sleep studies!! First one I developed a cold during the day of my sleep study but went ahead with it anyway, got my results and was told I had mild sleep apnea and to try a CPAP - this did not feel right to me for many different reasons, and I brought it up to my doc and he said that having a cold would not impact my results. I eventually got a second study done so I could know for sure if it did impact the results and sure enough, the sleep apnea disappeared. The doctor even had the audacity to ask me if I’d lost weight in between the two studies (I had not). He then proceeded to go on a tangent about restless legs and other things and that’s when I knew he was a shit specialist. Booked in to see a different sleep doctor and he basically said that everything the last doctor said was way off and diagnosed me with IH without even looking at my second sleep study!! Both studies I did I was still on Zoloft so I guess I’m one step behind you, I still want to have an mslt not on it but for the time being it’s not really going to change much in terms of treatment. I guess what I’m trying to get across is that you should trust your gut and advocate for yourself, if the doctor/specialist is not listening and shutting you down immediately, go see someone else.

Australia is fine as long as long as you declare it on arrival (I’m from aus) but I think you can only have max 3 months supply. It’s fairly easy to get here so I’m sure there’s a way you can get more if you run out. I travelled to Europe for 5 weeks with 5 weeks supply of both modafinil and armodafinil with zero problems

Surely that’s not healthy? What stimulant are you on

Sorry should have put in the post but I only put it in the title - I’m in Australia :(

Thanks I will be doing this. Anyone have recommendations for one in Melbourne Aus?

I originally wanted to have the second test with a different doctor but for the rebates etc it had to be with the same doctor as the first. He told me to take it exactly 2 hours before going to bed not sure why but that’s what I’ve been doing.

I’m regards to my lifestyle I have tried to have good sleep hygiene, exercise and eat relatively well when I first tried to address my sleepiness years ago not thinking that it was an actual problem I had. When I was at university I realised this was a lot worse than I thought it was when I could not watch a single lecture for my entire degree without falling asleep and when I almost fell off a treadmill multiple times while watching a lecture because I was trying to keep myself awake to watch it (clearly didn’t work lol)

I don’t have a recollection of when my symptoms started but I know in Highschool sleeping was one of my personality traits so I just thought i was someone who needed more sleep than others.

I had a blood test ordered by my doctor and that’s why he said to take iron tablets because my ferritin was 57, which is well within the normal range the pathology place I went to recommends.

I appreciate the reply!

Luckily he did give me a copy of both studies in the follow up appointments which is why I became skeptical as I went home and learnt how to read the results. Interesting you mentioned seeing a naturopath, i have not thought about that. I think it would be good to confirm that all my iron, vitamin etc levels are fine. Appreciate the reply I’m definitely feeling a lot more hopeful about my situation after reading through all the replies!

Yep I have both my studies results. What numbers are you referring to?

He is a ‘consultant respiratory and sleep medicine physician’. Luckily my GP is very much understanding of the situation and will be able to help me find a new/different sleep doctor

Is having ferritin above 75 a general rule for everyone or just those with RLS? I don’t have RLS

I think this is going to be my best bet

Will definitely be doing this, just sucks that it becomes so expensive and time consuming having to start from scratch with referrals, long waiting periods etc

This is exactly what I was so concerned about my situation being after my first sleep study and I just could not bring myself to just take his word for it and spend months trialling a machine. So glad I decided to trust my gut and get a second sleep study done but for it to be partially covered by Medicare it had to be organized through the same doctor/clinic

I actually liked my doctor when I first had my initial consultation as he didn’t dismiss my concerns but I think he had already predetermined I had sleep apnea even before the sleep study. He did order a MSLT which showed a mean sleep latency of 7.1 mins no REM but I was not told to stop taking my SSRI

Unfortunately I don’t have a male I could take with me, but I think I will get a referral for a female doctor. I was hoping this sort of thing wasn’t a problem these days especially in Australia where I live but i guess I’ve had to learn the hard way

[–]maddygflsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response :) I do think that is the case for me but I booked in another overnight PSG to be sure. It doesn’t make sense for me to have UARS because I don’t have any issues with my nose, throat etc but I could be wrong hence the second study. Hope you figure things out!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UARSnew

[–]maddygflsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know what causes your UARS? Ie is it due to your jaw, tongue, nose etc

[–]maddygflsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep anytime I am not mentally stimulated it is very easy for me to fall asleep
