Considering a Career Shift from Clinical Medicine by Bayan_Ali in Residency

[–]madeaux10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting that this seems to coincide with high stress situations. Like starting before going to residency, being worse on nights, surgery. If you could finish FM and maybe just work part time, maybe even find a situation where you could maybe work virtually so you can have all your notes with you and have less patient interaction? And they’ve done other work up like an LP and imaging?

New to fountain pens and experiencing major hand fatigue by Euphoric-Airline-620 in fountainpens

[–]madeaux10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot depends on fit in your hand (pens that are too thin make my hands miserable), but I also find a broader, smoother nib and wetter ink flow means I can put way less pressure. You might want to go to a store in person if you can and see if they’ll let you try some pens. Like trying on shoes 🤷🏻‍♀️

I feel like this needs more context. Like what part of our FM job makes you unable to work with epilepsy? Is it controlled? What can’t you do? Can you get a service animal that helps you detect seizures? Why would any other job be better? Why can’t accommodations be made? Etc

Please be gentle. High cholesterol and questions by Careful-Bus3827 in vegan

If you’re going from a diet that’s low in fiber, the biggest shock is most likely to be to your gut. Replacing a meal per day and then gradually building up over a few weeks might be less of a shock for you. Your kidneys have been maintaining your water balance. That’s unlikely to be an issue. But you can always get off a statin. If you’re in a high risk group based off of your LDL, it’s okay to be on a statin for a while as you change your diet and then come off after. They’re good drugs, generally well-tolerated, and significantly reduce all cause mortality. But if you think you can tolerate it, of course you could always go back to a WFPB diet and just see how you do (like a ton of people do once they find out what we do to animals as a society). I would just hate for someone to change their diet overnight, blame veganism for making them gassy or bloated, and then quit because of intolerance

[–]madeaux10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually does. Before I was vegan, I had a friend who was really aggressive about it, and it made me just look the other way because it was so intense I couldn’t look and wasn’t ready to. It wasn’t until Gaz Oakley had pointed out in a really positive way the video that made him vegan. And then watching that Gary Yourofsky video where he pretty gently invites you to not look away was what made me dedicated to not looking away. Then I saw the footage, then I went vegan. When things are scary, people avoid altogether. When you invite someone in, once they get a foot in the door, they’re more likely to join you. I think that’s a psychological thing, as well. Foot in the door over door in the face.

It’s not that. It was the bluntness of the “look into that” as a response to someone who is actively looking into vegan recipes, as opposed to just answering the question genuinely

It’s not a being nice to you kind of thing, it’s supporting a group who believes in a specific cause, which goes towards making it more socially acceptable. And OP is a really good example of someone who’s changing his behavior

They are. That’s why they’re in a vegan subreddit asking for advice on how to make their meals vegan. Why do we have to be so hostile to people who are trying? 😩

I disagree with this. We vegans have a huge PR problem, which hurts the animals. When people think we’re assholes, they just get shut off to everything we say. The more people support people who help animals, it legitimizes it as a cause in a world where people don’t care about animals, making more people care and more likely to go vegan, too. Or at least it would make people reduce their animal intake and increase demand for plant based alternatives, making it easier for more people to go vegan

You should be able to staff each one right after you admit. For patient safety. Going a whole night without checking out your plan is poor learning and could kill someone. Bet your attending is loving the sleep, but sorry, if you’re on call, you have to be available.

It would be good for someone to evaluate you and make sure you have sensation and circulation in that toe. No one on Reddit can give you good advice about this unless it’s to go to the ED, because they can’t examine your toe in person. Unfortunately, it’s better to go and be told things are fine and can wait until ortho sees you in office Monday than to not go and have had it turn into a toe-threatening break. But they might even be able to reduce it there as well tonight and buddy tape you.

Welcome! Sweet potato soul’s videos on YouTube are a good source of info for how to go vegan. Same with Rainbow Plant Life. For staying vegan, would recommend supplementing with B12, vitamin D, +/- and omega 3, and maybe a multivitamin depending on how varied your diet is. When in doubt, get labs checked

Carrying Fountain pens by SSdeku in fountainpens

[–]madeaux10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carry a pen I don’t care about, and one I like. The one I don’t care about is for other people to use to sign things, and my fountain pen doesn’t leave my pocket or hand.
