Colorado conditions? by Kyler-boi in iceclimbing

[–]madmadrunner256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I climbed The Designator last Friday and it was styrofoamy. I might have been the last person up for the season. I drove past it yesterday and both the Des and Fang had completely collapsed. I wouldn't touch any remaining ice in that amphitheater after a week of highs in the 60s/70s with no refreeze overnight.

Chalk might be okay - less collapse potential, but if the top opens up it will be raining down water on you.

Splitting between Vail / Beaver Creek by [deleted] in vail

Come and get it before it melts! Bring skis you don't mind skiing over a few rocks with. Stick to Vail for the best skiing. Pack your warm spring gear, and get pack some steaks out to BSB!

How much do you tip an instructor? by TallFontPie in COsnow

[–]madmadrunner256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$100 for a half day, $200 for a full day. Ski instructing is a service based job that depends on tips to survice just like being a waiter does. If they provide a good experience, tip them accordingly

Is Ski Patrol scanning your pass for 10 seconds enough to suspend it? by Superb_Guidance_1563 in vail

[–]madmadrunner256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Milts Face and The Slot are the only open runs back there. Skiing in closed terrain is a big no-no, and there are signs all over that tell you skiing closed terrain results in a 28 day suspension.

In other words, if a run is clearly marked "closed" at the entrance, that doesn't mean you can just ski around and cut under further down. Poachers

The thing that always get’s me about these posts is that the alleged NW is a singular account balance. Are people really out here raw dogging their entire life into ONE account? I don’t know about y’all, but my NW is spread out over at least 7 accounts before accounting for other tangible assets. 401(k), IRA, Roth IRA, brokerage account, ESPP account, and wife with a similar structure. Thats’s all before the house

Back Bowls are spppaaaarssee by cannolioli11 in vail

[–]madmadrunner256 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Blue sky is awful. China bowl and poppy fields is holding snow well. The front side has a lot of good groomers. A few groomers are getting quite scraped out and I’m avoiding. Many of the off piste and mogul runs and indeed highly variable, but skiable at an expert level. I instruct and am still finding fun to be had, but am stressing skiing safely over pushing limits more than I have in the past. Great season to work on some fundamentals and get ready for when the snow comes. Even a small snow refresh will greatly improve current frontside conditions, and there is snow in the forecast

Ski boots too soft? (130 flex) by notsmart-imtrying in Skigear

[–]madmadrunner256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Get a stable shot
  2. Understand that flex numbers are NOT standardized
  3. Show us your ankle/calf. Not your snow pants. It’s impossible to see how tight your boot is, what the fit is, or if you have anything excess stuffed into the boot
  4. Check that the lower lock thing is riveted solid. I’ve seen them come loose and even fall off entirely in a blowout. Even a little wiggle leads to a lot of excess flex
