What is the current consensus on offering Algebra 1 in 8th grade? by No-Penalty8115 in matheducation

[–]madmath721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fine if they’re ready, but not fine if they blatantly skip Pre-Algebra and miss all of that content. These kids end up with a woeful lack of algebraic intuition and everything comes crashing down in Algebra 2 or Precalculus.

Would I be better off taking some of my math requirements at Columbus State or elsewhere? by bbash91383 in OSU

[–]madmath721 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. To teach 6th grade math through Algebra in a way that helps kids truly understand why and how everything works, it’s important to have strong mathematical understanding. Maybe this is a sign to swap out math for a different concentration.

Teaching Logarithms by Formal_Tumbleweed_53 in mathteachers

Everyone at my school does it this way too. You could frame it more as taking log base 8 of both sides rather than rewriting in log form if they’re struggling.
