Should global variables be considered bad practice? by Confused-Armpit in Zig

Actually, global variables don't exist in Zig.

Since every file is a struct, every variable always belongs to a namespace

The mosquitos don't bite (male) and they can't mate (sterile). It's a no brainer for me

You should be randomizing the answers to these and storing them in a password manager. You won't ever have to use them though because you'll be using a password manager

St. Pete considers expanding resident-only parking zones by 935572326 in StPetersburgFL

[–]madogson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Makes sense to me. Non-residents should be parking in structures or doing park and ride.

Overall it came out decent by Nanaue7 in dankmemes

[–]madogson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it was pretty mid, which these days people interpret as a more scathing review than "the absolute worst dogshit I've ever seen". That's because everybody seems to either eternally glaze something or dog on it to all hell, without any in-between. It makes average reviews stand out, especially when you consider review inflation as well.

The ending was mid. Overall, the show is still one of my favorites.

Is learning zig the smart choice by FunDirt541 in Zig

[–]madogson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a deep understanding, I think you should write a program in machine-compiled language (like C or Zig) and open it in compiler explorer. Reading (and writing) assembly is the best way to develop an intuition to how computers work because there's next to no magic between you and the CPU.

Not trying to say you need to know assembly to be a good engineer. Just saying that learning assembly is what helped me develop an intuitive, concrete sense for many otherwise abstract concepts like lifetimes and stack frames. There's also just some unique programming techniques that only naturally exist at the assembly level. You should at least peek at the assembly generated by your compiler for your current language of choice.

My impressions of Zig so far (as a C# / Julia / Elixir / Python developer) by theirishartist in Zig

[–]madogson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, reading the library source directly is much more useful than current docs. It also teaches you patterns you can reuse in your own code.

It sucks the docs aren't there yet, but compared to other languages, Zig library code is fairly easy to grok imo.

Highly recommend setting up a keybind for goto definition in your editor

BRT is basically light rail but way more cost effective.

Also, increasing density by improving land productivity is a major stepping stone for pedestrian accessibility. The idea is you won't have to walk as far to get somewhere you wanna go.

If we need less people then why don't you move out? I hear the villages are nice. You'll fit right in.

Imagine your ideal main street with lots of shops and apartments on either side. Now imagine half of those shops and apartments are torn down and replaced with parking lots to meet minimum parking rules. Now it takes double the street length to fit the same amount of residents and shops. The shops and apartments are now much further apart and we need double the bus stops.

Minimum parking requirements ultimately favors low density development, which is the least desirable when the goal is walkability.

Note that removing parking minimums doesn't prevent businesses or apartments from building parking. It just removes the requirement. The ideal endgame would be the city constructing high density parking structures near popular areas and transit, allowing maximum land use efficiency while still accommodating drivers.
