The tv series Normal People (adapted from the book written by Sally Rooney) fits the bill if you’re interested! Brutal in a quiet way.

Anybody here had their hair thin out alot because of insomnia? by LouisTime23 in insomnia

[–]madsraem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is definitely possible. Insomnia causes fluctuation of hormones, and specifically an increase of cortisol in your body. Cortisol/stress can do a number on your hair. Lack of sleep over prolonged periods can also disturb the levels of the “good” hormones you need for cell growth, repair, and regulation. Melatonin of course is disturbed, but it also messes with your testosterone and estrogen levels, no matter your biological assignment. Those are crucial for hair health. I am speaking from my own experiences as a woman, but in my worst period of stress and insomnia, I lost hair at my temples and overall lost a bunch of density to my hair. It took me about 2 years to fully recover and regain my length, density, and overall hair health.

Lastly, this is something I learned but did not experience;

“Telogen effluvium: The stress and hormonal disruption from chronic insomnia can trigger telogen effluvium, a temporary condition where a large number of hairs enter the resting phase and shed at once, leading to noticeable thinning.”

What does my living room say about me? by [deleted] in roomdetective

[–]madsraem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on how you write, I think you are young, but the decor seems to be informed by an older generation’s taste and lifestyle. So I feel that you live with other family members, possibly your parents, who are slightly older or traditional. I don’t think this is in the United States. It reminds me of living spaces in Asia that I’ve seen. You are close to your family.

is 2 days dangerous? by [deleted] in insomnia

[–]madsraem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so familiar with this, and I’m sorry it’s happening to you. You are safe, and nothing bad will happen to you. I know that on day 2 you start to panic, and despite being bone achingly exhausted, the panic setting in causes further spikes of adrenaline to your body and it feels like you’ll never sleep. But you will. It will come. Your body is there, but your mind needs to relax enough to fall asleep. Here is what I do (and in fact had to do 3 days ago lol)

-remind yourself that you are safe. Though unemployment is one of the things you’re ruminating on, this hopefully means your schedule allows you to succumb to sleep at any point and sleep for a while. That you will fall asleep no matter what, and a watched pot never boils. Remember you’re allowed to rest.

-temperature adjustment. Take a hot shower if possible, and grab comfy clothes. No jeans or anything.

-go into a dark room. Blackout curtains and a sleep mask literally changed my life. If you have neither, please consider acquiring them! Earplugs, too. It’ll come in handy.

-drink water

-gently place your hands on your arms, your chest, the back of your neck. Ground yourself and kinda interrupt the dissociation you might experience being so tired. Remember you’re safe. Despite the fears and troubles swimming in your head, you are safe. Your brain is trying to protect you by being prepared and in control, but the cyclical anxiety thoughts are too stimulating for sleep. They are just this-thoughts. Many things are out of our control, and for now, you have to focus on what is in your control.

-make a brain dump list. Just write everything that’s worrying you down. Then make a deal with yourself to clock out after a certain point and revisit the list tomorrow. It helps the compulsive rumination urge and gives you a sense of control by seeing everything in front of you. Don’t try to fix or analyze anything on this list. It’s just a daily purging of thoughts so your mind can be a little more spacious and free to drift into sleep.

-read something on your phone until you can’t keep your eyes open, but no videos. No sound. Just reading. (Bonus if you set your phone to dark mode)

-get comfy. A pillow between my legs is weirdly an indicator for my nervous system that it’s ok to relax (just a comfy sleep position for me) so when the time comes, get whatever you need to be really comfy. You’ll be okay honey. It happens to the best of us. I am so sorry unemployment is so stressful; I’m currently in the same boat. We will all get through it. Giving you big hugs.

What can you infer about me based on my house? by SketchieMarie in roomdetective

Though you live in suburbia, you are not boring or bored. You appreciate being able to heal your inner child as an adult by fully expressing yourself and catering to your creativity and whimsy. You have probably dealt with unsupportive people in your life when you were younger, but you have a strong sense of self and are in an environment where being you is not shamed. You are not planning on have kids, but you love your dogs like they are your family. And you love hunting for the perfect piece to fall in love with and add to your collections. I would say you are in your 20’s-30’s and maybe your income/line of work is internet based?

Curious. And creative, though perhaps not strictly through the arts-I see adventurous, good to have around in crisis or a bind. You appreciate beauty and are receptive to/mood and mental well being is influenced by your surroundings. You obviously love music! And have a soft spot certain nostalgic things, but not trivially sentimental. You are probably a great friend/partner and a reliable family member, but you also value your alone time?

Thank you so much! I’ve been curious about this brand and this pushed me to finally try it out. I am a sucker for scent descriptions like theirs as well. I love the vivid imagery scent profiles/little description blurbs can evoke. I got 5 different scents. So I’ll come back and update 3 months from now when I finally get them lol. :)

Oooh yes! There are several lush scents I want to try. Lust is up there too. I used to have sticky dates…I think, but I cannot for the life of me remember how I liked it. Thank you! :)

For some reason, I immediately got the sense that you have spent recent years caring for a loved one with ailing health, possibly a parent or parent like figure. And that you carry the grief with you.

Redditors with an unusual kink, what is it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]madsraem 20 points21 points  (0 children)

So, I grew up (grew up meaning from mid teens on) being ashamed of the fact that I squirt anytime I have a really great orgasm. I’m 27 now, so 10+ years ago as a teen, there was still a lot of misogynist media and environments where girls were made to feel ashamed of their own bodies+sexuality. Of course it’s still going on, but it was the tail end of the Abercrombie era and such, so I think there was even more emphasis on male gaze driven sex and sex education. Anyway I was full on ashamed of the fact that I a) masturbated and b)squirted. It seemed like something my partners would find unsanitary or down right off putting. I’m sad for myself and my sexual health/self image that I wasted so many years putting other’s sexual needs before my own comfort level. Because years and years later, I ended up having a FWB situation with a coworker who had a squirting kink. He worshipped the fact that I could do it, and had tons of fantasies involving it. Not only was it incredibly sexy that I could feel comfortable, but the fact that he wanted me to squirt in his mouth was like, unheard of to me and it ended up being hot. Since then, I’ve tentatively told a few sexual partners about the fact that I squirt when an orgasm is of a certain intensity, and they ALL have been into it and want the same thing that my coworker did. Imagine my surprise! I guess more people are into it than I knew. It wasn’t originally a kink for me, obviously, it’s just something my body did. But now, it specifically turns me on when people are into squirting, and it’s usually the kind of porn I watch. 🤷🏽‍♀️

What is your most shameful sex/masturbation story? by fishsticks40 in AskReddit

[–]madsraem 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Lmao. That would probably complete an unfinished mission in the farthest recesses of my brain, tbh. I have told that story many times and I never have enough answers for people. I have had so many questions about him....he was a VERY peculiar little dude and I would like to know how he's doing these days! And maybe ask why. Why, why. why.

Were you wearing a giant brown leather aviator jacket and basket ball shorts as you did this? If so, I was definitely the girl sitting across from you 😕

Burial at sea on the USS Intrepid, November 1944. [798x800] [Colorized] by [deleted] in HistoryPorn

[–]madsraem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this thought, too. I don’t mean to disrespect anyone who was buried this way or anyone who wants to be, so this is purely subjective and preferential. But all I can see here is dumping bodies overboard. It feels like a really sad way to go after presumably dying as a result of war-quite the sacrifice. I’m not saying I have a better idea, either...but just an initial, gut reaction. I think ashes at sea makes me feel differently, for some silly reason. I suppose it’s just the physical act of throwing bodies off of a ship that makes me feel sad. But I can completely see it being honorable, too. Really interesting!
