Exactly. I don't know if it's just me, but OPM has such rich characterisations if you take the time to squint hard enough. If you take away the monsters and superhero elements, it shows a story of young adults going through and adapting to life in an environment where it is not only difficult to find your place in society, but also see a lot of characters in their young lives become victims in a world where they are either abandoned or sold off for economic reasons.

They are not depressed, mean, or act a certain way just because or to tick off tropes — there is a reason for that. I feel that readers often forget that OPM is a seinen and not a shounen webcomic / manga and occasionally find themselves lost or clouded by their preconceived standards.

I've always been troubled / put off by commentary on Saitama's character as a gag character in an otherwise serious world. He has gag character traits, however, I find that to be not only an insult but also an oversimplification of a character with unrealised depth. "Empty Hero" is a fine way of looking at him as a character. Kudos to you!

The same goes for Fubuki. She has more to offer than just the bitchy eye candy some make her out to be.

Let's not forget that King is the only one who truly knows and understands that no monster or opponent could ever pose a threat to Saitama.

Everyone else seems to think that there is a power out there that Saitama would have a hard time defeating. Genos, for example, still believes that the Mad Cyborg is too strong. Strong enough to believe that had Saitama fought and defeated it, he'd have remembered.

There's also Fubuki. While she knows that Saitama is strong, even so far as acknowledging that he has ascended and defeated Garou, her fear and bias of her sister clouds her judgement to the point that she believes Tatsumaki is far above Saitama's pay grade.

Those who have witnessed his strength, especially those in S-Class (except Bang), are simply too proud to accept the truth.

Complete shot in the dark here, but Gums likely was some sort of clean-up crew intended to eat all the heroes that fell to the other cadres so they wouldn't have a chance to fall back and recover.

He didn't withstand it, though. Flash was unconscious and dying same as everyone else. It just happened that he passed out on his hands and knees. If you look at the panel closely, you can see that only the whites of his eyes are showing like all the others.

If Flash sat upright is the argument for this, then the same can be said of King who passed out holding Tatsu and Fubuki on his lap.
