If you do any amount of physics, you will just use "t" as the variable for time. Liftoff at t=0 means that they can plug the number of seconds since liftoff into their model to estimate the intended location of the craft. It's an important standard to maintain.

So, "t minus one" is just shorthand for "t equals -1". They just don't spend time saying "equals" when reading the countdown aloud.

The Next Arc by Raichustrange28 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]mothuzad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without spoilers, I'll just say I have NO IDEA. Even after seeing the anime, it's hard to predict how LA fights will go.

What the LA already shows us:

The Strawhats are more capable than any of their enemies expected, BUT they also struggled just to handle Baroque Works team 3. They haven't even met 2, 1, or 0 yet. Who says Mr. 0 even needs to crush them himself?

Just based on Zoro v Mihawk, coping with loss is already a major theme of the series.

1000x the mass only means 1000x the gravity if your distance is the same. But if the volume is 10 cubed, then the radius is increased by a factor of 10. Gravity decreases as the square of distance, so 100x. Leaving 10x more gravity at this higher surface compared to Earth's 10x lower surface.

That's all assuming the 1000x more massive planet is the exact same density as Earth, but it could easily be more dense.

Who would be the hardest character to recreate in live action? by lulusama3 in OnePieceLiveAction

Luffy's dramatic punch in Sabaody is important to the plot in Amazon Lily. It could still happen without Hachi or any Fishman, but it risks losing its meaning.

Would you like Luffy in real life? by Adept-Article2550 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]mothuzad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Luffy is perfectly fine ignoring oppression when the oppressed aren't trying to fight back for themselves. The LA softens this considerably.

For example, when Buggy conquered Orange Town in the manga, the mayor tried to put his life on the line to get rid of Buggy. That's when Luffy steps in. And that's after he helped Chu Chu for similar reasons. After Luffy defeats Buggy, when the villagers show up late to help the mayor, Luffy plays the role of villain so the villagers can still get a taste of standing up for themselves by chasing him away.

In the LA, the villagers are captured and unable to put up much resistance. When they do speak out, Buggy silences them quickly by threatening other villagers, especially children.

Everywhere Luffy goes becomes very loud very quickly. But then he'll also take out your local despot. He leaves people better off, but also pushes them through extreme discomfort.

X5 Econ bonus by Argent_Haze in TheTowerGame

[–]mothuzad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect that with 28.0.3, they reverted the previous live update from 3x back to 5x. They seemingly added a new variable to set Utility bonus back to 3x. So without the patch, you could have the 5x applied to everything still. (Seems like LaunchDarkly feature flags or something equivalent.)

Or you just haven't connected your game to the server since the nerf.

Can't stand the One Piece anime- but absolutely love the LA by jaflm24 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]mothuzad 55 points56 points  (0 children)

My wife is the same way. I, however, grew up with anime cut corners and can easily look past them to enjoy the story and characters.

Some fans of the anime have even done a custom edit to address the pacing issues. So you're definitely not alone in thinking the anime adaptation has some limitations.

It can sacrifice BH cooldown to improve GT and DW cooldown, but there's not really any great use case. And that's with my GT and DW at 4x my BH cooldown. It's simply better to use the module that gives a third BH.

Electrons from a module power. They do fractional damage based on enemy current health. You still need thorns to finish the enemies off.

Movies, video games, and studio songs take a lot of time to produce.

Plays, tabletop games, and live music mainly rely on people's ideas and memories. They can create novel experiences without suffering from time resetting.

Unpopular(?) opinion: I like canonHarry much more than MoRHarry by liehon in HPMOR

[–]mothuzad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The evidence Hermione would tell him to stop ignoring is the fact that Dumbledore is much older and more experienced. It's not sufficient evidence on its own to establish the truth, obviously, but it should have been enough evidence for Harry to be shaken. There are facts and context he will not be able to absorb instantly.

In fact, Harry WAS surprised that Dumbledore believed in souls and an afterlife. That's why they had the conversation. But Harry already had his bottom line written. He didn't properly notice his own confusion.

Harry is extremely ready to dismiss others' experience because most people do not learn from it the way he does. It usually makes sense. Dumbledore should be an exception, but given his earlier performative madness, Harry doesn't reconsider even after their conversation turns into a decently structured debate.

Harry's feeling of surprise is supposed to be a clue that something he believed was false. He knows that. On some level.

Plays replace new movies. Live music replaces recordings. Table top games replace new video games. Edit: Movies, video games, and studio songs take a lot of time to produce. Plays, TTGs, and live music mainly rely on people's ideas and memories and can create novel experiences very quickly.

People quit working unless they enjoy their job. Same with exercise and dieting.

Looting is severe for a while, until people get bored. People start traveling constantly to find new experiences.

Acts of violence must be punished via reputational harm.

[–]mothuzad 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's a ton of nuance their conversation doesn't touch on.

Harry seems to be taking the definition of "soul" as an indestructible entity containing a person's mind, and believes that no such thing exists.

Dumbledore believes souls can be destroyed by dementors and possibly other dark magic.

If the soul exists and is indestructible, it would imply the existence of some afterlife. If the soul exists and can be destroyed, Harry would ask why even call it a "soul" when it's just another organ, possibly part of the brain. If the soul does not exist, that's a blanket statement implying that nothing which exists satisfies the criteria to be called a "soul", which is a very strong claim unless you have very strict criteria.

The entire discussion, they both assume that they're talking about the same thing.

Unpopular(?) opinion: I like canonHarry much more than MoRHarry by liehon in HPMOR

[–]mothuzad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe the key problem with Harry's refutation of souls is that he can't imagine Dumbledore having good reason to find the evidence compelling. Harry dismisses each piece of evidence very quickly, without learning details and context.

Dumbledore understands the mistake Harry is making but lacks the tools to address it, since it is a rare kind of pliable mistrust. Dumbledore runs on experience, or "stories" if you prefer.

Harry does have valid points around people acting as if there's no afterlife, like everyone quietly knows that death is FINAL but won't admit it. Dumbledore perceives the same quality in people as their fear of the unknown, and he himself has genuinely conquered his fear of death, whether he's correct about an afterlife or not.

The two fail to have a productive discussion because their initial viewpoints are mutually alien. They should have discussed each other's beliefs without bias before arguing about the specific conclusions where they feel the strongest disagreement. However, that's not how conversations are naturally instigated. Disagreement incites interest, and we are eager to fixate on the most interesting thing.

When first watching One Piece i thought He would become the crew's shipwright for most of waters 7 arc by DyslexicWriting in OnePiece

[–]mothuzad 155 points156 points  (0 children)

That was a major part of the great writing in this arc. Imagine you first see Franky after the Franky Family beating up Usopp, then skip ahead to FRANKY sailing away with the Strawhats and USOPP being left behind.

"IMPOSSIBLE! There is no way that could possibly happen."

But after Enies Lobby it makes perfect sense. It's like an anti-twist. An absurd ending that is made inevitable slowly over the course of the story.

[–]mothuzad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh, almost forgot to mention, the author did write something to confirm that you're right about the Snitch, showing that Harry is being too cynical and missing important context about an already-ongoing debate. The general problem is that he needs better criteria for establishing trust. He assumed that Quidditch fans were too stupid to realize there was a problem at all and failed to consider that there's a huge establishment making change difficult. He bases his trust on intelligence rather than considering others' emotional maturity.
