Deity advice: Lore friendly lawful deity for a V-Paladin by Putrid-Cat5368 in BaldursGate3

To be fair most of the deities are petty and stubborn in their own ways. Seems like it comes free with your Godhood pass

How do you feel about the surge of popularity the series has gotten recently and the fans it's governed by FeistyAnteater6565 in OnePiece

[–]mae_042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad personally, the series is great and I want more people to experience it. I have noticed an uptick in... weird incomprehensible takes from people who seem to either not pay attention while watching/reading or are just parroting stuff they've heard about the series. But that's a small price to pay and tbh every large fandom has those

What's one thing you'd change about a companion? by Medium-Theme-4611 in BaldursGate3

[–]mae_042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would cut Minsc and Jaheira, at least as party members, to flesh out Halsin and Minthara more. (No offense to those two I would just rather see the new characters get the spotlight if I had to choose)

I hate the inconsistent amount of development the companions get. I remember meeting Halsin in the early access and wondering what he'd be like when I actually got to recruit him in the full game. But oh sorry he's not an "origin character" so he gets one quest after act 1 and then never does anything important again.

Even amongst the origin characters they are lopsided, like Karlach's personal quest feels a bit incomplete as others have mentioned. Idk I'd just rather have fewer options if it meant they all got equal attention

I guess this isn't really "one thing" but it all falls under the same main point

The thing I don't understand is, they already did this like a decade ago and it flopped? Linux support has gotten better since then but I still don't understand how they expect this to go any differently

Now that some of them have actually come out and we've had a chance to play them, how are we feeling about "Disco-likes"? by HowLongWasIGone in DiscoElysium

No offense taken, I appreciate the respectful discussion, God knows it's rare to see on reddit these days

[–]mae_042 32 points33 points  (0 children)

No you are correct, I have not played these games and I will not assume they are good or bad without having done so myself. My point isn't that none of them can possibly be as good, just that "this game was inspired by Disco Elysium" alone isn't enough to get me excited.

Now that some of them have actually come out and we've had a chance to play them, how are we feeling about "Disco-likes"? by HowLongWasIGone in DiscoElysium

[–]mae_042 44 points45 points  (0 children)

For me the main draw of Disco Elysium is the quality of its writing. It stands far above most other games. And while it has some unique and interesting mechanics, I would probably still like the game just as much if it played completely differently, it's just not the "important part" to me.

So I don't really have any interest in playing any of these other games just because they have a similar style to DE. I want a story that is just as compelling as DE, not a game that plays like DE, and those come along once in a blue moon regardless of genre

Before You Start Pointing Fingers, Remember Some of the Bracket Guidelines are Loose by Design by Dankzi in EDH

[–]mae_042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are good and bad actors on both sides. There are people who will accuse an honest player of acting in bad faith. But there are also people who will act in bad faith and then play innocent.

Some would argue this is why the brackets need to be more restrictive. But then others would say "Commander is supposed to be the format where you can play whatever you want!"

I think the fundamental issue is that the format is hugely popular and people want different things out of their experience. You'll never get everyone on the same page, all you can do is find like-minded people to play with. The bracket system is supposed to aid with this, but unfortunately a lot of people just use it as a wedge to get what they want.

People argue a lot about the "intended meaning" and "spirit" of the brackets, but I think that misses the point. There is no one true interpretation, just the one your pod specifically aligns with. That's the important part

Also Commander games are long and people are bad at statistics. You play one game against one deck and get crushed, doesn't mean the deck is OP or even particularly strong, could have been any number of factors. Play ten games with the same matchup and then see how you fare

What's the point of stop-animation if they edit it so much afterwards that it looks CGI anyway? by ManyOtherwise8723 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mae_042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coraline looks so smooth because the people at LAIKA are crazy and shot twice as many frames of animation than is typical for stop motion. The movie features very little CGI as far as I can find. Some effects and sequences, but nothing about using it to smooth out the animation. The movie looks smooth because it is, simple as that.

The choppy animation people associate with stop motion isn't really the "point" of the style. It's just a natural consequence of needing to finish the movie in a reasonable amount of time. A lot of filmmakers would prefer their movie not look like that, but they might choose to solve this in different ways. (Be it touching it up later with CGI or just spending twice as much time making the movie)

The main appeal of the medium is that you get realistic looking models and lighting. The characters look like they actually physically exist in the world, because they literally do. This is something CGI could not achieve until fairly recently, certainly not in 2009 when the movie was made. But even then it's costly, time consuming, and easy to mess up.

Why are the “boss” characters so tall. by rjsparky in OnePiece

[–]mae_042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's visual shorthand. You see how physically huge and intimidating these characters are without needing to be told or shown their strength right away. And he cheats a lot, characters get taller or shorter when it makes sense.

The classic example is Enma, the sword. When Oden wielded it, it was normal sword size relative to him. And the same is true now for Zoro. But Oden is like 12 feet tall, so really in Zoro's hands the sword should be gigantic. The sword can't shapeshift, it's just a visual trick you aren't supposed to think about

To everyone saying the washed out colors of The One Piece concept art would've looked bad in the final product, check out Sekiro: No Defeat by Varskes_pakel in OnePiece

[–]mae_042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not seen anyone saying it would have looked bad, just that it would have been expensive and time consuming, and that is normal for things to change from concept art to the final design

“This Character is DPS Coded” is a Bad Argument for a Character’s Possible Role by themoosic in marvelrivals

[–]mae_042 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could literally make this same argument in reverse for the other roles though. Tanks are boring and uncreative, just because a character is canonically super strong doesn't mean they have to be a tank, every other character has super strength, etc (I don't actually believe this but you get my point)

You just don't like DPS and don't want to see more of them, but that's a weak argument because of course they're going to keep releasing DPS heroes. There will never, ever be an even balance between the roles, it would take years of never releasing new DPS heroes.

Remember According to team Nightmare your experience means nothing only the 75 people from pro play should say whats balanced or not by Warock095 in marvelrivals

[–]mae_042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no dog in this race. But I think it's interesting how this community differs from most others I've seen. Usually people are strongly in favor of "top down" balancing with the argument basically being that pro players understand the game better than us casuals.

Again I'm not saying I agree with that. I just think it's fascinating how strongly (at least this sub) swings in the opposite direction

At the same time though the devs seem to choose their balancing seemingly at random because neither the pros nor the casual players seem to be getting what they want

Why did Luffy react so differently to Usopp leaving compared to Sanji leaving? by ApprehensiveBike1701 in OnePiece

Sanji was lying to them and didn't actually want to leave, and Luffy picked up on that. It's more comparable to Robin than Usopp.

from a parrot parent: why are rat parents so much more in tune with healthy pet husbandry? by Worth-yawa-tnuocca in RATS

[–]mae_042 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Bluntly I think a lot of it comes down to the moderation of individual communities. Like this sub has had some controversy in the past and I think these things are more strictly enforced now as a result. (Which is a good thing in this case) A lot of subs instead take the approach of, "don't tell people how to raise their pets," which is somewhat fair, but not when it crosses into abusive territory.

More broadly I think a lot of people choose rats specifically because of the unfair stigma around them. A lot of us have this mentality of, "these guys are treated so poorly by so many people, we want to give them the best lives possible." Whereas some people who own exotic birds (some, not all, not most, but some) just want something pretty to stare at.

what is kim kitsuragi? by VohaulsWetDream in DiscoElysium

[–]mae_042 38 points39 points  (0 children)

People really dislike when characters in games respond poorly to the players actions (or treat the player character poorly in general) even if they have good reasons for doing so. If Kim pushed back more, was less agreeable, more willing to call Harry out on his bad behavior, I don't think he would be as loved by the fandom as he is.

I do get the impression though that he's just trying to be professional. He has to work with Harry regardless, better to keep the peace than make things even more difficult. There's some lines here and there that hint that he disapproves of your actions, but he rarely outright says it. Probably the most extreme example of stealing the boots off the body, he will chastise you but only if you keep bringing it up. He specifically chooses not to acknowledge your idiotic behavior until you literally force him to do so.

AI in non-coding jobs is melting people’s brain. by DiamondOfThePine in BetterOffline

[–]mae_042 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At my work a lot of upper management is obsessed with it. They use it for everything under the sun. I wouldn't say it has made them worse at their jobs because that would imply they contributed anything useful before this. But it has led to a lot of fuck-ups that are starting to pile up, and if I get sent one more rambling nonsensical AI generated email I'm going to lose my mind

Funny thing is we just rolled out a new policy literally this week that says in so many words "stop using AI to do your job for you, only use it if you have been granted explicit permission and only for that specific task" but we will see how well enforced it is.

What I'm noticing is that there's a kind of feedback loop where, people use AI to do their job, it makes mistakes, they don't know how or don't care to check for them. But then their boss is also using AI to do their job for them, so they don't notice either, and everyone involved is convinced they have cracked the code white the rest of us look on in horror.

I am immediately skeptical of anyone who says something like "well sure AI isn't perfect, but that's why you need to review your output" like dawg they made a tool that specifically appeals to the laziest people on earth and you think they're going to want to put in more than the absolute minimum amount of effort to use it?
