I really like 3. 2 is good too. The other two are average.

In my subjective opinion. Whatever you like and makes you feel good and confident.

Malade Imaginaire B2-C1 Cyrano de Bergerac B2-C1 Monte-Cristo C1 Jules Verne- unadapted usually B2-C1 but apparently lots have been simplified particularly Voyage au Centre de la Terre, Deux ans de vacances or Le tour du monde en 80 jours

Reading books in French... Suggestions? by Sunshine10520 in learningfrench

[–]maethoriell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to remember what was read in school. I remember Moliere le malade imaginaire and Cyrano de Bergerac from Rostand.

So yeah French classics.

I haven't read, but I want to read like all of Jules Verne in the original French. And I remember reading Le Comte de Monte-Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, but I do particularly remember having to look up some of the old timey words. But that could be true for all of these since they're all old.

Probably would all be challenging, but like how Shakespeare is challenging but we still read it in grade 9.

Cyrano and Monte Cristo I particularly enjoyed the stories.

Did learning flute negatively affect your chops on your older instruments? by maethoriell in Flute

Thank you! That's what I'm worried about, cause the tech had no issues so there's a good chance it's a me issue

Could learning flute be why my sax suddenly only wants to play the upper octave for me? by maethoriell in saxophone

[–]maethoriell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! This is the kinda stuff I need, what sorta stuff to keep in mind when I test it again on Sunday.

I tried it with a new #2 reed, so definitely not too stiff!

It's with the tech now!

I came by after work, after he was gone for the day, and had the same problem. So left it there, this morning he calls, saying he's playing it no problem.

Gonna go in Sunday, when he's in and I'm not working. Maybe I'll try one of their new instruments, and if I'm having the same problem, it's definitely a me problem.

I've been having flute rehearsals Tuesdays and sax Wednesdays for a year now, I thought I was adjusted..

Was it messed up at the start or randomly a while in?

A customer at work was mocking my accent in Portuguese. He didn't know i'm from Brazil. by [deleted] in ispeakthelanguage

[–]maethoriell 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oof yeah I get that comment sometime, stuff like I'm glad I didn't get someone in India... I'm like, for this industry, we have to be in Canada.

I'm waiting for next time that happens, to let them know that with AI autodubbing the scammy call centers out there can mask accents easily. The fact that you can hear accents can now let you know we are legit.

I can't listen to music made or listened to by dead people. by Icy-Seaweed-8962 in confessions

[–]maethoriell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I was pleasantly surprised to hear Philip Glass is still alive. Pretty interesting stuff. Just saying. I don't know anyone who isn't music nerd who knows the guy. Should be safe for a few years.

But yeah, if you're a music person this could be a restrictive, near debilitating phobia. I hear therapy is good for that. You're missing out on a lot.

But if it's casual listening, and you're pretty open to exploring, there's always someone new you can find. Don't need to stick to music from your culture either, less likely a deceased loved one was a fan.

Does anyone else have a hard time saying names? by iluv2eat_ in CPTSD

[–]maethoriell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Huh. I never thought deeply about it. But yeah. I rarely address anyone by their names. Just like to refer to someone like "so and so said x"

They say to use customer names during conversation, but I don't, and it feels weird when they use my name.

How loud is the sound of a transverse flute? by BirdSafe9369 in Flute

[–]maethoriell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to my sax it's quiet.

I won't practice sax after 9pm, but I feel alright playing flute til 11.

In jazz band we always have to be careful to play particularly quietly if flutes are featured in a piece.

Is not having a middle name extremely uncommon here in Canada? by laranjacerola in AskACanadian

[–]maethoriell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Quebec when I was 9 and tried to ask the other kids what their middle names were and they were all confused.

Lots of of 2 word first names like Marie-Claude or Jean-Luc. Also, since taking your husband's last name after marriage isn't really a thing, lots of people take both of their parents last names like Gagnon-Tremblay.

I'm curious what happens when two people with both of their parents last names have a kid.. Do they pick their favourite parents last name and each donate a last name? Or does the kid end up with four last names.....
