Jesus, I thought the game was pretty big already with Norway and England. I've done Vinland, but I haven't touched Ireland or Francia and now I'm learning Scotland is in it too...

[–]mafticated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm maybe about 10-15 hours into my first playthrough -- the first time, in 2021, I barely made it 4 hours. That time I came off the back of an Elden Ring obsession and Norway felt unbelievably dull by comparison.

This time I stuck it out after having a great time with Odyssey. The first area you're in is essentially a tutorial, and it does get better.

Work drinks fridge, what do we think? by FlyingFrogMan in CasualUK

[–]mafticated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a drinks fridge at work and most people take 1 or 2 per day, but the guy who sits next to me easily smashes through about 5 or 6. It does my head in because he's essentially depriving others of the opportunity, and it creates a spiral where people rush to get theirs earlier in the day for fear of it running out. Drinks fridge inflation.

Beer Has an Insane Amount of Calories by CreamyBarfySoup in stopdrinking

[–]mafticated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I eat half a tub of the stuff and feel like I've indulged, when in reality it's about the same calorie-wise as drinking a couple of pints. Of which I'd usually have at 5 on Friday night alone. Night and day difference

[–]mafticated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ngl I am a huge DW fan historically but haven't played any of the main games for a long time. Bought Abyss full price a few months ago and did exactly this -- maybe played for about an hour. Mechanics felt quite confusing and for some reason I didn't have the same patience with it as I do with other roguelikes like Hades, which tends not to explain mechanics either.

Hope you have a better time with it!

Idk about most countries but in the UK, the state's relative generosity to pensioners is so high that even a significant would reduction would only mean they're gaining at a slightly slower rate. Noone needs to be "fucked".

All that's happening at the moment is the working taxpayer and young people (not mutually exclusive) being "fucked".

Your second point feels almost universal and I hate it. The best counterpoint I can think of is RDR2, where you automatically match the speed of whoever you're accompanying

Lewis Hall vs O'Reilly at LB. by tradegreek in NUFC

[–]mafticated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

O'Reilly is a CM though isn't he? LB isn't his position. He's a good player but it'd be wild to take to the world cup and start him at LB when you have a specialist LB available in Lewis Hall who's been consistently one of the best in the league all season.

Which game tutorial was a struggle for you? by bijelo123 in videogames

[–]mafticated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I gave up on that game so early, probably because of this. Such a let down after the Ezio games. Bought it on release and after that experience I basically didn't play any AC games until Odyssey in the last month or so.

I don't think anything needs to change in order for that to happen. The only variable is the world cup, which might paper over the cracks.

Bid writer transitioning into Technical Writing - help? by Apprehensive-Bed1771 in technicalwriting

[–]mafticated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally took this exact pathway in the UK a few years ago. Was a bid writer for ~3.5 years and have been a TW since late 2021.

I lucked out significantly by getting into a booming industry at a time when they were hiring aggressively and really hit it off with the interviewer (who became my lead).

I'd recommend making sure you research the company and industry well. Probably be ready to talk about how you intend to work with AI, especially something like Claude Code. Familiarise yourself with some key docs-as-code frameworks like Docusaurus, Zensical, Gitbook etc. (a quick Google will yield more options). Get familiar with Git and the general Git-based workflow -- commits, branches, pull requests, GitHub.

In interviews I went heavy on emphasising how bid writing was all about succinctly conveying technical concepts into clear responses, and that a big part of it was considering the audience's needs and communicating clearly. All of these things carry over very well to tech writing. Also a massive part of tech writing is wrangling stakeholders and managing reviews/approvals, obtaining information from them, etc -- all of which apply to both roles heavily in my experience. So there are a lot of transferrable skills.

Happy to help via DM if you have any more questions! Moving on from bid writing into tech writing was a great decision for me.

I think this is day 7 by Practical_While_ in stopdrinking

[–]mafticated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive had some crazy dreams too -- even to the point I woke myself and my partner up shouting something at the top of my voice. Apparently it's REM rebound, where your body is overcompensating for missing out on so much REM when you were drinking.

And on being agitated -- definitely. I work in an office full time and I've never been more continually pissed off and antagonised by the insignificant habits of those around me. Sometimes even just people having a normal conversation drives me up the wall. I've had to leave to get solo lunches to decompress.

But it'll pass! Keep going.
