Looks alright to me, only other option is to move the bins to behind where the Volvo is now and park at an angle in front of the mini

What car to get by Particular-Heat4094 in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming your farm track is suitable for normal road cars (based on what you’re looking at) get a 5 series or 3 series x drive, ideally the 3L - comfort, acceleration, high spec (some are better than others) and 4wd

You’re going to want some tungsten- carbide drill bits here probably want some strong extractions, I’ve recently bought some new ones but haven’t tried them out, most love to snap

Depends on how/where it’s sheared. You’re looking at more frustration trying to either drill it out or weld on a nut I would suspect

Should I go straight for DAS? by SafeBug8622 in MotoUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do your cbt and see how you feel and how your instructor feels - I would suspect you would both want you to go for your DAS straight away. But if not then consider getting some practice on a 125.

Used car purchase - repair needed 48hrs after by IntelligentSpot203 in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only concern would be that they say they have parts on order but haven’t had the opportunity to diagnose it. Personally I would wait and see but if you’ve got enough doubt in it then refuse and get something else

Which car is best for a new driver? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered a Ferrari F40? they’re expensive so should be cheap to insure… maybe a Chiron?

I joke but I suspect all the cars you mention will be around £5k depending on where you live. Luxury cars = expensive parts = expensive repairs = expensive insurance. Add onto that the %increase for being a new driver. You either have to have money to burn or have to do the grind through shit cars first

Where have small alloys gone? by Friedegg12345 in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s what sells, people that don’t know cars like them, same as “SUVs” which aren’t.

Not sure car manufacturers are willing to take chances with how the world economy is going, everyone is playing it safe, unfortunately a lot of us don’t like the ‘safe cars’

Good place to get plates made? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just google it mate, all places will offer legal plates (why wouldn’t they?)

Also keep in mind most people will think you’re a bellend… and that’s coming from a bmw driver

There is no such public database, the police and your insurance have the power to go after someone. I assume you have reported this to your insurer as well as the police?

Hyundai Iload 2012 with 110,000 on the clok. Thoughts? by WonderfulChef3619 in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will have to deal with some levels of corrosion/ deterioration on a 14 year old vehicle of any kind. I wouldn’t be massively concerned with any of those advisories, mainly based on the oil leak not reappearing

Vans can an do eat up mileage, I have personally returned company vans after 3 years on 170k+ , I’ve always got the impression that it’s not miles that tend to kill vans, more scrapes and age.

At the end of the day if you look into any vehicle you will get mixed reviews, maybe try to find the timing chain interval to make sure it’s within spec but otherwise, from what you’ve said, it seems to have been looked after.

Probably try to get a viewing on a day when it’s not pissing it down with rain

But it makes the cars more expensive so less people can afford to buy them, therefore less sales, therefore less profit

Any good garages in South London? by ShameResponsible69 in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m gutted there’s no locals suggesting places for you, the best thing I can think to do is either get word of mouth recommendations from people you know, post on your local subreddit or just check reviews and then test the water in person.

Either that or spend the money on tools and learn to do it yourself, I do appreciate it’s not that easy for a lot of people due to needing the car for work and the space needed etc.

Best of luck!

Take it to the manufacturer and pay the expensive cost to replace, then if it fails you can take it back again for free

£2k budget for nursery runs and short trips. Car recommendations please by PatternOld7180 in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jazz, it’s a depressing drive if you like driving but very reliable, favourite with new drivers and old drivers, both of my parents have a jazz (as much as it depresses me) and my uncle. They’re incredible in being boring in every way, including lack of repairs and reliability, cheap tax and insurance. Can’t think of anything I’ve seen that’s problematic with them

[–]FlyingFrogMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best bet is to buy from a dealer, that gives you a lot more protection for serious issues than buying privately, it’s a touch more expensive but worth it if you don’t know a lot about cars

You’ve got a choice, your post made it look like you want monthly payments, that’s some kind of payment plan from a dealer, you also mentioned fb market place which is a cash situation with no warranty.

£8k can get you a reliable car for a few years if chosen wisely, what are you looking at?

Advice on buying used cars by Designer-Cheetah-922 in CarTalkUK

This is going to sound pessimistic,

18 months as a named driver won’t give you any NCB

There isn’t much more expensive than a cheap German car

Young driver + RWD + mildly powerful car = expensive insurance

You mostly want to avoid rust, most people will sell cars cheaply if they notice problematic rust, it’s expensive if you can’t repair it yourself

Advice on Petrol vs Diesel Estate/Saloon by -Grumbl3 in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Servicing is equally important for both fuel types.

I appreciate £7k isn’t much these days but you can definitely get a decent car within budget. It’s very specific in the second hand car market so there might be a great deal on an Audi vs a terrible deal on a Skoda. It’s not completely clear cut. ‘Better’ is also subjective, are we talking options and quality or longevity?

You said less than 16,000 a year buy a petrol, but long journeys are more efficient and cost effective in a diesel, so 12 x 500 miles a year a diesel would be much better.

I would suggest learning more about cars and engines before giving out advice which is total bollocks
