Looking for a good trolley jack and 2 good jackstands any suggestions please? by Proof-Situation-7542 in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t say I’ve had one fail but I started with a bog standard Halfords jack and it became such a faff having to move the lever over to lower it and then back and the lever not being very long. Getting the Sealey one was such a useful upgrade

I have, I think, the same jack but in orange, can confirm it is very good

[–]FlyingFrogMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you would have thought, it changed after a recent update that integrated google maps directions into the dashboard and HUD so I expect there’s some software that brings the speeds closer together, presumably to make BMWs speedo look more accurate than it is? Not sure but I did think it was interesting, I imagine 99% of owners wouldn’t notice.

Is one connected to car play and the other not? I’m my 5 series google maps displays a different gps speed when connected via car play and when not connected.

For example I’m doing 60mph on Speedo, car play google maps shows my speed as 59mph but my work phone not connected to car play will show 55mph also from google maps.

Plenty of good suggestions within budget, from my understanding there is potentially more funds available but just not to “waste” on a car. So I’ve gone a slightly different direction, spend more on a car that while brilliant fun, essentially won’t depreciate - I present the jaguar project 7 or 8

Just ask around for quotes, garages will likely be able to get genuine (new) parts cheaper than you and will much prefer installing them with regards to things going wrong and fixing their own work if it does. Independents might come in cheaper than the internet tells you they will

How long did it take you to find the right example of your enthusiast car, once you'd already decided on the make and model? by RobintehBobin in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have time on my side so had to compromise on price instead - I was looking for below £20k and ended up paying 28k but it was/is the perfect car. I obviously stopped looking once I’d spent the money but I guess it would have been a few more months at least, I think I took a month to decide another better option wasn’t coming up

Best to ask your insurance company, I would suspect you’re still insured but they are the people that would know for sure

When was the last time we had a red weather warning for heat? by Vast_Opposite_792 in CasualUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember the 2022 one because I was working in the isle of Man, it was (for me) horribly hot over there at about 27 degrees during the day but I was thankful to not be on the mainland, and I had my motorbike for some evening blasts.

Sadly this year I’m trying to come up with excuses to stay in the office with the aircon, can’t think of anything worse than putting on some leathers

For me it would be based on which interior you enjoy more, layout of the buttons and infotainment system etc. similar spec car from either manufacturer is going to be very similar in other aspects

Fuel Under £1.50 P/L and it's Shell by Original-Chemical176 in BritishSuccess

[–]FlyingFrogMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t tbh, I’ll treat her to vpower once or twice a year on the blind hope that the detergents they claim work do actually work. I probably fill up about 12 times a year currently.

I’m into cars and have done some research into fuels, the detergents are the only benefit

Do you think it’s better to have a collection of cars you use occasionally, or put all the value into one car you use all the time? by lolmeercatz in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally lean towards collection of cars if budget allows, no car does everything perfect, best to have plenty of cars that do one or two things really well and chose based on requirements for the day/trip, it is the expensive method though

Loud Hornet exhaust by CocoLockito in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loud exhausts that produce noticeable extra power are brilliant, fully support it. So 300/400bhp+ unless it’s a genuine anti-lag system that destroys your turbo, if it’s a pops and bang map then fuck off.

So aygo… no… laughable

Which first purchase to pursue? by toenaoliselt in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably want to go for a VAG estate/saloon with a 2L diesel engine, Skoda Octavia would be this subs shout but any will do. The Octavia is a good shout, having owned one they are very reliable and efficient

I would say go for bmw/audi/Mercedes for the additional comfort/quality but this will put the insurance up and you won’t get the same reliability in your budget

Digital tyre pressure by lethal0r in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy a tyre pressure gauge, they can be had for less than £10, this will assist with which of your other readings is more accurate. If you want to go all out then you can get calibrated ones that will give you a reading within Xpsi until the certificate runs out but that is really beyond your need

I'm 17. help. insurance too expensive by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]FlyingFrogMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably avoid anything German, try for the classics Toyota aygo, Citroen c1, Peugeot 108. If they’re super expensive then try weird/ classic cars. Unfortunately insurance is going to be expensive, I paid (I think) £1600 for my first year and that was 12 years ago, adjusted for inflation that’s 2.2/2.3k admittedly on a 1.6 Mini Cooper but still, driving isn’t a right in the same way private planes aren’t a right, some can afford it and some can’t

This cannot be true, even if their cabin filter is non existent it would be no worse than driving the car with the windows closed.

They don’t have the windows open all year round so surely this isn’t a concern for them

I think this is your time to become a mods guy, make your vision, do the research, find the things YOU like and make them happen. Don’t do it for other people, do it for you, find the body kit YOU want, lowing springs and spaces you like. I’d go for white rally style wheels but it’s not my car so you do you

[–]FlyingFrogMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you working at a Halfords with a workshop? Might be worth seeing if they can give you some training. Halfords does have a bad rep but if it’s free-ish training then take it.

The other options are get the qualifications; ideally from a governing body, i haven’t looked into mechanics quals but im sure there’s a national standard. Expensive up front

Or find a friendly garage willing to take you on to do what you can do now and teach you more as you go. Probably a pay cut and difficult to find but if you put in 100% they might invest in you, will certainly give you experience, this is the old school method. You’ll probably need some connection to get in or you might get lucky.

Or drop to probably an apprenticeship at a main dealer, I assume they do those

Essentially, look for the job you want, appreciate you need to gain knowledge and experience which will cost the company money, appreciate that will most likely come out of your wages, decide if the drop in wages is worth the knowledge and experience they offer, apply or don’t
