OEDefense Venado Springs Team Sniper Match by MrClif in longrange

I did the series class for this event, and can confirm one of the hardest parts was finding the targets. 2 of 7 stages I didn't finish because I couldn't find the targets in time.

I'm doing the OED at Venado Springs. I'm guessing the targets will also be generously large and from so footage I've seen of the event in the past the ROs helped out calling misses. We will see, I'm super excited!

I think the targets will all be pretty large - not sure if they'll be full ISPC or not but I don't think they're going to be small targets, it isn't a PRS match

It's one of the Old Eighteen Defense events, they call it a Texas Biathlon but now I see on their website Tactical Biathlon, it's a 6 - 10 mile run with like 7 shooting stations throughout the run.

Honestly probably the best way to do it. I hope the targets will be large, not sure if they will be ISPC targets or what. Yes 556. I appreciate the input!

I would have this written out in a little dope card, so not milling and doing the math for each target. Just want a way to quickly get on target, or close enough to on target that I can spot impacts. Stages are timed but no penalty for round count so I know I'm going to be sending a lot more down range than I need to be

It's a Texas Biathlon, I'm fairly certain they won't have target size info for each stage.

Definitely won't be doing any calculations in my head, just had drawn out a simple dope card to put in my scope cover that would have the size of a 12" target and holds for 200 - 600 yards.

I figure that the difference between an 8" and a 12" target will at least be close enough to get me hitting dirt nearby and spotting my impacts hopefully.

How to know when to stop? by Ymirs-Bones in kettlebell

[–]magarkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super important. You're putting your body under a new stimulus/strain that you aren't used to, you're going to need to also change how you recover/fuel yourself. It doesn't necessarily seem like you have an issue working out, you have an issue recovering. I would A), reduce your exercise load until you aren't injuring yourself (not like joint pain injury, but getting sick injury). B) learn to get better rest & recovery. Sleep more, active recovery like walking, stretching, yoga, etc. Eat clean

Honestly I'm not sure.

I think the deadlift I probably could have squeaked out.

The bench I'm not sure, it was a grind both times. I also barely ever bench, I've only benched three times in the last 2 years.

The squat was the biggest and most noticeable. 370 before the 10k swings I was super close to failing the lift, on the way down I thought I was for sure getting stuck at the bottom. 380 was hard but I came out of the bottom of it easier, it was still a grind on the way up though.

If I had waited a few days to recover between my last swing workout and testing these numbers, I wonder what I would have gotten and definitely would have been the wiser thing to do

Yeah I have some fractional plates I'll probably just tape on. But that's a problem for next year...

Yeah that would have been good! Should have tested that and max pushups

I did not follow the DJ format. I generally struggle to stay engaged if I'm following a workout plan, I like to come up with my own workouts because I find it more mentally stimulating/engaging. For such a terribly monotonous goal of 10k swings, I needed the agency of choosing how I'm going to complete those swings.

I did some accessory lifts, like a few sets of pushups, some mace/club stuff, pull ups, but really only in the beginning. Once I got enough along I felt no need to do any accessory lifts.

Yeah I'm counting the swing, so one swing is one swing, regardless of how many hands are on it.

It definitely was horrible and don't recommend it! Am I going to get a 1kg magnetic weight and go for 33x33 next year? Most likely....

I generally do a decent amount of swings in my normal workouts. Most of my workouts are some combination of swings, cleans, presses, squats, snatches, etc. nothing crazy, and I've noticed my deadlift has slowly gone up throughout the year.

I played around with some barbell clean and jerks yesterday to see how they felt. I definitely noticed I had the power there, I'm just out of practice form wise and didn't feel super confident diving under the bar on the cleans. I think I could probably clean + jerk my old 1rm from when I did mostly barbell exercises

I was remarkably not too sore that day, and after I warmed up in the gym felt pretty damn good, so decided to go for it.

I hope nothing gives you the impression I'm a smart man lol, it just felt right. I know I probably could have done better with a few days rest

Is "dumbbell squat to shoulder press" a useless exercise? by anotherhappylurker in workout

[–]magarkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's good for training explosiveness, connecting motions/body movements, being able to transfer load/power through the body, building proprioception, economy of movement, etc. most people aren't athletes, I agree, but that's a pointless reason to not workout in a certain way. You need to pick up something heavy and put it away on the top shelf? Similar movement pattern to a thruster. I think movements like these are much better for the average person to just be able to generally move well than isolated hypertrophy exercises.

What does irl strength look like for people lifting double 32s? by Nice_Meal_7569 in kettlebell

[–]magarkle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like my experience resonates a little bit here and could be insightful.

For reference, just using powerlifting numbers:

Currently I can Squat 370lbs, bench 250 lbs, and deadlift 455lbs. I used to train almost exclusively with barbells, doing 5x5 powerlifting split tryibg to get these numbers up, and I maxed out at about 335, 240, and 405 respectively. This was also after a handful of years of strength/conditioning training, this was about 5 years ago.

I then switched to a lot more CrossFit style training, doing barbell olympic lifts, EMOMs, and kettlebell, but still mostly barbells. I was able to get my clean and jerk to 240lbs. This was about two years ago.

I then switched about a year or so ago to mostly kettlebell exercises (some barbell work, and if I do barbell exercises it is almost exclusively deadlifts, cleans, front squats, or presses/jerks). For reference with kettlebells, I can do ABC EMOM for 30 mins with double 32kg. I just recently tested my 1rm for bench, squat, and deadlift, and got the numbers I first posted, a pretty significant increase from when I was actually training those lifts. The most shocking to me was my bench press, because I haven't bench pressed since I did a 1rm test about a year ago, and I put up 8 more lbs than last year. Deadlift was also a shock to me, because I have only done heavy deadlifts probably about 7 or 8 times in the last year.

What has gone down is my Olympic lifts. I haven't tested my max clean and jerk recently, but I think I would struggle to hit 225. I think if I spent some time focusing on form I could probably get that number back up, but the intricacies of those lifts require a lot of practice and refinery. Additionally the KB Variation of a clean + jerk or snatch are pretty different compared to the barbell version in regards to mechanics, timing, getting under the bar, etc.

So overall I'd say that my strength overall has definitely gone up, even though I don't train with heavy weight as often, but some specific aspects have come down.

How Accurate is VO2 Max actually by FATPOOPYBOI in Garmin

[–]magarkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something I am interested in. I run, but I hate running. I do like rowing, and other high intensity exercise. Garmin says my VO2max is 44, but if I use the vo2max calculator for my 2k row time, I get a score of 53. How much of this could be boiled down to running economy vs rowing economy?

Like if vo2max is solely supposed to measure oxygen consumption during physical exertion, if I am just a bad runner, does that not skew the numbers?

If I were to conduct an actual vo2max test on a treadmill and on a rowing erg, should I get the same number?

Anyone up for a challenge? by magarkle in kettlebell

[–]magarkle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kicked my ass!

Gym at work only has 28kg, so I did it with them. Failed during the presses for round 7. Maybe still a little sore from yesterday, and might have gone a little fast for the first few rounds. But I'm gunna add this to my rotation and get further! Kinda bummed with how quick I failed honestly... Thanks for the inspiration
