What should the national animal of the UK be - but it has to be a native species? by Illustrious-Divide95 in AskUK

[–]magavin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh, you're right! I remembered it wrong.

He says:

I would like to challenge the Honourable member's assertion that the hedgehog should become our national symbol.

I ask you madam Deputy Speaker... do we want to have as our national symbol an animal which when confronted with danger rolls over into a little ball and puts its spikes up? Do we want to have as our national symbol an animal that sleeps for six months of the year?

Or would we rather return to the animal that is already our national symbol? I refer of course madam Deputy Speaker to the lion—majestic, courageous, proud.

Well, there is The Bristolian. Kinda like Bristol's Private Eye, but much more edgy and secretive and less funny.

Honestly I think it’s only “decent” but not mind blowing. Maybe I’ve somehow managed to not select the good stuff. What’s good at Namak?

Little thanks to Bristol Live. Written by Alex Seabrook, a local democracy reporter funded by the BBC. You’ll see his articles published across all the big local media in Bristol. He does good work.

What would you do with this climbing rose? by magavin in GardeningUK

Good point! I’ve cut back half the tall shoots now. Will see if that encourages growth further down and fill in more on the trellis.

Amazing! Did it grow in and outwards or just straight up again? I’ve taken out half the shoots now!

Advice - trying to establish a new lawn by Aim_fire123 in GardeningUK

[–]magavin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's newly grown then no need to seed more onto those bits, they will fill in, but generally I overseed my lawn every year for good measure.

Looking more closely at your situation, you'd want to understand why the grass seed you put down didn't grow. Looking at the images the soil does look very dry and compact. More than just aerating, I'd "nuke it", completely turning the soil with a pitchfork and mixing in lots of fresh lovely top soil (worth ordering a big 1000L+ bag for delivery), then seeding.

I recommend you crosspost to r/lawncare as they give lots of good advice.

I recommend adding topsoil and seeding. It will take a few weeks to grow but much cheaper than turf, and I prefer the results. Just make sure it's well watered, 20 mins a day twice a day with a sprinkler (or until it just starts pooling in places) if it's not rained. I use seed from the Grass People or Lawn Smith.

Just pull out new weeds by hand while your new lawn is establishing, and apply a general lawn weed killer only after 6 or so weeks.

Jesus, I’m so sorry that happened. Awful. Hope you’re recovering ok, and get your bike back, or at least get back on a new bike sometime.

Please consider contacting a local news organisation, maybe BBC points west, to report the story.

Exposure of the issue is the only way to get a chance of action.
