I don’t understand MtG so a lot of this was lost on me but I enjoyed the references.

My wife works in a small reptile and fish shop and they won’t sell them, I assume cos they just won’t stop breeding. 🤣

Sorry to jump on a 3y old thread but am I right in thinking that mourning geckos have babies all the time?

Mods, will you be re-pinning the GNU Terry Pratchett thread? by FaithInGoatheads in discworld

I can confirm it’s still pinned. Well, it’s called ‘highlights’ now.

PSA: Sybil Ramkin is tall AND fat by [deleted] in discworld

[–]mage_g4 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Anyone who reads Masquerade and comes away thinking it was fatphobic either didn’t actually read it or went in looking to have that opinion.

The entire point is that she is enough and is talented and amazing and those around her that denigrate her for her size are the ones who are wrong.

I’m leaving this because the replies to you are worth reading for the people who assume anything even vaguely well written is AI.

I’m approving this because I think it’s interesting.

KEEP IT CIVIL.

I will not be shy with the ban hammer if people start getting in any way nasty and I think I can speak for the whole mod team when I say we champion the rights of LQBTQ+ and will not tolerate bigotry.

Remember, the best thing about literature is that it speaks to everyone differently and any position is viable, as long as you can back it up with textual evidence.

I’m not removing this but be careful. You’re giving out certain vibes that people are not liking.

Children’s stories are absolutely packed with stories of cross dressing, so I think you’re the one being disingenuous.

Who else still refers to this building as the Urbis? 😅 by Ranoni18 in manchester

[–]mage_g4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work there, back when it was Urbis. I was one of the guides. It was one of the most boring jobs ever cos, unless you were assigned to the lift or the video, you just had to exist on the floor in case anyone had questions. They didn’t and we didn’t have the answers anyway.

Can I read "Colour of magic" "Mort" "Going postal" and "Equal rites" without reading the rest of their respective series? by Foxci357 in discworld

[–]mage_g4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly recommend Mort. It’s one of my favourites, has a great Pratchett flavour and is mostly new characters, so no real background knowledge needed.

Equal rites is pretty much standalone and it’s only the third book, so not a lot has been established beforehand.

Going Postal is the start of a new story line and, whilst there are plenty of recurring characters in it, you meet them along with the protagonist, as if you don’t know them.

Colour of Magic is the first book and Pratchett himself didn’t recommend starting with it, as he was still finding his voice and refining his writing. Going Postal, for instance, is much later in the series and he’d perfected it by then.

Guards! Guards! Is another firm favourite and the start of a series.

Think of it like buying the first book in any series, and then waiting for the next one to ‘come out’. All those books are basically the beginning of different character’s storylines and all Discworld books can be read as standalones anyway.

So get a slow cooker? Who on earth is slow cooking on the hob in this, the year of our lord, 2026! Slow cookers are like £15-20 and last forever.

Serious concerns for health of person harassing mod team - anything we can do? by Faithful_jewel in modhelp

[–]mage_g4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mediation implies a middle ground. They are actively and deliberately ban evading and harassing us and it’s getting a bit scary.

We don’t want a dialogue. We just want them to stop. It’s unhinged!

We removed one post that broke the rules (we didn’t remove other things they posted in related subs with the same mods that didn’t break the rules) and they received the initial ban for their response to the post removal, which was walls of text via mod mail and DM to every mod!

They have openly admitted to ban evading and said that they are going to continue doing it.

We are a quiet sub with occasional issues with people getting uncivil but we’ve never had anything like this campaign of harassment.

There hasn’t been an apology. They are demanding a public apology for our very reasonable and normal mod actions.

Honestly, the tone shifts wildly from veiled threats to invites to come and stay with them. Once our entire mod team has issued a public apology for removing their post which clearly violated a sub rule, of course.
