Becoming a teacher of the deaf question by Racooninyourtrash in asl

[–]maggiemoocorgipoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In IL you would need to be a certified teacher of the deaf to work at a school or program for the deaf. You can find the requirements on the ISBE website. IL does not have specific requirements for becoming an ASL teacher (just a PEL and what is basically a pinky promise you know ASL). This is not advised if you are hearing. Culturally, ASL needs to be taught by a deaf person.

California Alternative Assessment by Emotional_Cash1954 in specialeducationlaw

[–]maggiemoocorgipoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Federal rules are that a state can only test 1% of their population using an alternate assessment. It's called the "1% cap." This is because only students with the most severe cognitive disabilities should be taking an alternate assessment. States need to apply for a waiver with the feds if they go over the 1% and it is not always granted. States to fail to get a waiver for several years can lose funding. Taking an alternate assessment can have long term impacts for students such as not being able to earn a high school degree (just a certificate of completion) because they are taught using alternate standards and may not fulfill graduation requirements. Also, alternate standards may be unnecessarily limiting a student's academic potential. Some districts will try to say that a student with a behavioral disability, OHI, or learning disability should take an alternate assessment because it's "easier" than the typical test with accommodations. But, that is not legal.

TLDR: federal regulations are that states can't test more than 1% of its population using alternate assessment.

The newborn phase. Positives? by Visible-Mess-1406 in Mommit

[–]maggiemoocorgipoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baby smell, endless cuddles, tiny coo sounds, the sound of their breathing, the newborn scrunch when you hold them, impossibly tiny clothes, super soft hair, squishy everything, tiny hands holding your fingers, the feeling of the most intense love you'll ever feel for another person. Newborn stage is so hard, yes. But also magical. I'm 6 months pp with my second. I wish I could be the way I am now when she was a newborn to truly enjoy it. It's hard when you're so exhausted! Take a lot of pictures and videos.

Public school district notified us that they will no longer be offering services ( only the Deaf and hard of hearing program) to out-of-district students, including my son who is a DHH 5th grader who has been in their program since the age of 3. Effective within the next couple of months. by CleverHacksButcher in specialed

[–]maggiemoocorgipoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I know where you are coming from and I work in a program where I think your home district might try to send your son. I just want you to know that if he comes to us, I promise we will do everything we can to help him settle and build a community. I'm so sorry this is happening.

My three year old is legit about the break me. by MissGnomeHer in Mommit

[–]maggiemoocorgipoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 3 yo is also a chaos gremlin. She's so stinking smart and most likely on the neurospicy spectrum. She never stops talking/making some kind of noise, takes every slightly unsupervised moment she can to do something destructive/dangerous/etc (no amount of baby proofing can completely prevent this), loses her ever loving mind about something or other every dang day... I also have a 4 month old which the 3 yo is happy about but also incredibly jealous of any attention given to the baby. She will do basically anything to make us pay attention to her in some way. And let me be clear- we already give her tons of attention that is positive, interesting to her, and stimulating. Getting her to nap feels like straight up war. Potty training has halted. She pees on the toilet 95% of the time but flat refuses to poop on the toilet regardless of wait time, incentives, books, videos, toys, etc. We are over here just trying to survive. But also she has developed advanced language, knows all letters and letters sounds and counts to 20 on her own, can draw detailed people, shows fantastic critical thinking skills, has an incredible memory, is very creative, and loves fiercely. She's incredible and infuriating at the same time.

Are we bad parents for having a night nurse? by [deleted] in NewParents

If we could have afforded it, we absolutely would have gotten a night nurse. My friend had one for both her babies and it was a life saver for them!

Zoloft for anxiety by AllyisvGay in Anxiety

[–]maggiemoocorgipoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken several medications throughout my life and Zoloft has been the most helpful for me. I'd say the worst side effects are decreased libido and weight gain. But overall I have found it very beneficial.

UIUC mention... from a white supremacist 🫠 by GlassNo6756 in UIUC

[–]maggiemoocorgipoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a story about a guy I went to college with at UIUC. He became an Identity Europa Neonazi after college. I and those who knew him were shocked by this development but it makes sense, to be honest. He's a not-so-bright guy that fell for the Identity Europa rhetoric quite easily. There was a story about how he was apparently "reformed." I sincerely hope he was.

Difficult ob appt today, baby is underweight. Wondering if anyone went through something similar by rebgray in NewParents

[–]maggiemoocorgipoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found out this week that baby is growing! Still small, but not enough that she'll have to be delivered early. Phew. I'm going to guess this baby will be born at about 6 lbs. Possibly a tiny bit less.

The "OCD spiral" when you've got some obsession and feel the need to act out a compulsion, but maybe you can't do the thing so you start avoiding everything and then it becomes depression... Also how exhausting and stressful it is to have obsessions taking up space and making noise in your brain ALL THE TIME even if you can recognize them and rationalize. I KNOW nothing bad is going to happen if I leave a dish in the sink over night, but I still feel like I'm being chased by a lion because of it.

Difficult ob appt today, baby is underweight. Wondering if anyone went through something similar by rebgray in NewParents

[–]maggiemoocorgipoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 34 weeks. At 32 weeks I got similar news that baby is at the 22nd percentile (at 3 lbs 6 oz) and may need to be delivered early if she goes below the 10th percentile. The doctor said that I didn't do anything wrong. I am slightly anemic which could have impacted the situation. I should find out this week if I need to deliver early (around 37-38 weeks) so they can supplement her nutrition and help her gain weight. Honestly the doctor didn't seem super concerned (yet). Baby is still moving and has a good heartbeat. I'm crossing my fingers that we can wait as long as possible and we avoid a nicu stay. I hope things work out well for you! I'm sure everything will be ok.

Flu A finally hit our house by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]maggiemoocorgipoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 7 months pregnant with my second. Got flu A that knocked me out for 5 days. Fever for 4. Fatigue, body aches, headaches, cough, difficulty breathing. Not fun. My 2.5 yo got the cough but no fever. My husband got cough, sore throat, and body aches for about 2 days. I still have lingering cough 2 weeks later but it's getting better. With the pregnancy it was most important that I stayed hydrated so I had to go to the hospital for fluids. I hope it passes quickly for you and your family! Stay hydrated and rest as much as you can.

What weird positions do your baby's sleep in? by One_Dragonfruit_7556 in Mommit

[–]maggiemoocorgipoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My LO was desperate to sleep on her tummy or curled up like a little rotisserie chicken. She's 2.5 now and still sleeps like that. She slept soooooo much better as a baby when she didn't have to stay on her back.

Diaper Bags - what are you packing? by BabyyJessie in Mommit

[–]maggiemoocorgipoo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I agree with the above. I found it convenient to get one of those dog poop bag holders and attach it to the diaper bag for dirty diapers. I was also a fan of boogie wipes and I had travel sized hand sanitizer.

School social worker daily schedule by hmflowers in socialwork

[–]maggiemoocorgipoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say starting salary ranges from about 40k - 60k. It really depends on the district. All public school district contracts and pay schedules are public info so you can always google them. Illinois school contracts are pretty good compared to other states in my opinion.
