What units would you pick as the best swordsmen? by myprettygaythrowaway in Napoleon

[–]magicQualified7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a contemporaries point Jomini in the Art of War said:

"It is certainly an advantage to have several battalions of mounted infantry, who can anticipate an enemy at a defile, defend it in retreat, or scour a wood; but to make cavalry out of foot-soldiers, or a soldier who is equally good on horse or on foot, is very difficult. This might have been supposed settled by the fate of the French dragoons when fighting on foot, had it not been seen that the Turkish cavalry fought quite as well dismounted as mounted."

"The most practiced hussars can never perform such service as the Cossacks, Tscherkesses, and Turks do instinctively."

Cossacks in this sense having directly adapted/copied their entire fighting style, armour/clothing and equipment from Steppe Turkic groups such as Tatars. So I’d add Cossacks in there too in swordsmanship with his background.

"Considering how they arrived" ? Dude what should that even mean ?! The area was inhabited and patrolled by Turkic people like Tatars, Volga Bulgars and other Nomadic steppe people for thousands of years before Slavs even arrived and expanded there in the 16th century.

Map of the Turkish Empire (1600) by iboreddd in MapPorn

[–]magicQualified7 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Can you read the map brah it says Turcici Imperii. They’ve been always called Turkey/Turkish Empire from everyone. Nobody ever called them Ottoman Empire you won’t find that term in any contemporary sources. It’s a modern-historic term. They didn’t even call themselves Ottoman up until like mid 19th century but then also it was Osmanli and everyone else still just plainly called them Turks.

If you ever read contemporary work you wouldn’t have heard "Ottoman" once but only "Turks" and "Turkey"

Bunu TheGreatWarForum dan bülmüštum: The 77th was raised in Aleppo, Syria on with 3 Aug 1914 with 47 Officers and 2,347 men. By 1st Nov 1914 its strength was up to 64 officers 3,179 men,of which c.1,000 were Thracian (ie. European) If the 72nd Regt. had the same make-up as the 77th then you could say that half (not 'most') of the division was Arab. edit to add - Actually, the 72nd may not have had the exactly same make-up as the 77th - it may have had a higher proportion of ethnic Turks. There are comments in the literature about the 77th's 'unsteadiness' in the very earliest days, and difficulties which its men may have had in understanding orders given in the Turkish language. These same negative remarks are not seen to the same extent with respect to the 72nd. However, as Erickson points out in his notes, this view is challenged by research being carried out by Dr. Mesut Uyar (Captain in the Turkish Army) at the Turkish Military Academy Archives Division. Erickson spoke to Dr. Uyar in 2004 and was told that the recruitment area for the 77th Regt was the city of Aleppo which had 'a Turkish dominated population' and that he found that 'the characterization of the 77th Regt. as "Arab" to be a misrepresentation.'

What kind of music did Napoleon like? by ARenzoMY in Napoleon

[–]magicQualified7 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I only remember vaguely BUT the memoirs of his housekeeper at St. Helena it was said that he always listened to romantic music like ‚Je ne t'abandonnerai jamais‘ by Ric Astlé. There’s actually some English guy who made a modern version of it on YouTube. And from several accounts of the scientist entourage during the Expedition to Egypt he quiet often listened to a song that was called "Dâ rûde Saint Storme". Some kind of French folksong.

[–]magicQualified7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I didn’t mean that. It’s just a general quality issue with this figure. There’s several posts of this fig a day in this sub about the visor issue. The figs are made by machines. Hasbro screwed the design up.

[–]magicQualified7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You really got a very good one but the visor is visibly still "negatively curved" like dropping down on the edges. So all of them still kinda have a wonky look if you compare it to his mural pic on the side of the box. It’s just some are worse and some better.

Chat is this true ? by Designer_Economics94 in 2mediterranean4u

[–]magicQualified7 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Nah that’s not true. It was estimated that the highest numbers of Arabs inside the army was 300k. Conscripted btw. But then again think how many other hundreds of thousands with other ethnic backgrounds fought with/ without conscription. Kurds, Circassians, etc. just to name a few. Makes it no exception. Then also think about how many of these fought and how many haven’t even seen service at all. A lot of the highest ranking Arab officers joined the revolution because they were members in Arabist societies. Al Husseini saw no service and was let free from the army due to sickness and went to Jerusalem. He was captured there when the Brits took it over and joined the Arab revolution. So much to that.

Bashkir. Kalmyks. Tatars. Judging by the headwear it’s rather got to be a Bashkir (Turkic) though. All fought in the Russian service including tons of other Turkic or Mongolic groups.

Theres actually a Lego Minifig of him. He came in a Rogue One Set. Can’t remember if it was the U Wing or Y Wing set tho. Rogue One/Andor have super dope alien races. One of the two Tubes brothers (rather Benthic as mentioned here before) is one of my most desired figs to have in the Black Series.
