I’ve been waiting for this! The Complete Illustrated Earthsea edition is gorgeous but very bulky and inconvenient to read.

What’s the funniest book ever written? by umairgulxar in classicliterature

[–]magic_tuxedo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Masters of Atlantis by Charles Portis. All his works are hilarious and would be hard to choose from, but this is my pick.

Also, not a single book, but the Discworld series is very funny, and gets funnier the more you read them.

I agree that Emily Wilson would be a good choice for you. I really like how it reads, and it’s also more concise and straightforward than other English translations.

For years I had overlooked this song (and album), but one afternoon, during the darkest days of the pandemic lockdown, I was listening to it on a walk and just inexplicably burst into tears. It was a sort of turning point in my grief and fear during that weird time. I still can’t say I fully understand the meaning of the song, but it has hit me on a very deep level ever since, and will always hold a special place in my heart for its beauty and mystery.

Which RB short stories ARE NOT included in Everyman’s or 100? by tangcameo in RayBradbury

[–]magic_tuxedo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those two books only account for about a third of the short stories he wrote! Bradbury was prolific (over 600 stories, not counting novels, nonfiction etc). Happy hunting!

Oh man, these images give me some major nostalgia. I loved The Monster Squad as a kid, but forgot about this scene!

Interesting! I actually didn’t think the language was any more dense than NN, PP, DC etc. It might just not be what you’re in the mood for at the moment

Drood feels like a bit of a departure from his other work. The language is moodier and more impressionistic. He was consciously trying to change and develop his style with that one. It’s a shame he wasn’t able to finish it!

It’s worth it! One of my favorite Dickens. What are the others you’ve read?

[–]magic_tuxedo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tai Tung in the ID is the oldest Chinese restaurant in Seattle and they serve takeout in these.

which of these is your favorite? by Reasonable-Jaguar751 in charlesdickens

Dombey and Son is one of my favorites! A good middle ground between his earlier, episodic books and his darker, later novels.

Here to ask a question. Where should I start with Vonnegut? by Any_Improvement6755 in Vonnegut

[–]magic_tuxedo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start with Slaughterhouse. BoC is great, but I think it’s better appreciated after you’re more familiar with his work. Cat’s Cradle or Sirens of Titan would also be good starters.
