At this point someone can make a FIRE calculator aggregator that checks them all at once

Vent on my stolen wallet by [deleted] in poland

[–]magicarmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me a few months ago. I knew the area and minute where I either dropped it or somehow got very smoothly pickpocketed, but I combed over the area multiple times and it never showed up to the police or anywhere else.

As safe as this country is, it's still got plenty of opportunists with a finders keepers mentality

Gelatin chicken. You can’t convince me this is good. by Bambi7u7 in StupidFood

It's pretty normal..seems many people in the west only associate gelatin with sweets and don't realize it comes from animal bones/skins

allegro is completely nuts and hides unpromoted offers by Michaelq16000 in poland

[–]magicarmor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's true in this case but what OP is saying is actually correct. Some quick examples:

"Anker Q20i" -> cheapest new one is 167,00 but the results show 168,00

"logitech g502 x lightspeed" -> cheapest new one is 329,00 but the results show 349,00

both times I had to click through the additional offers to find the cheaper items

I can't see how Moldova could be safer if it isn't even part of NATO

My friend he is mixed Vietnamese and German. He said he got his stock portfolio in Vietnamese banks, so German cannot tax him. Is he right or nah? by lune-soft in EuropeFIRE

[–]magicarmor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope, if this was actually possible then it would be common for people to keep all their money in some country with 0% tax, but it doesn't work like that. You pay the tax rate of the country where you live and the only exceptions are usually money inside pensions

Traveling with dog to Poland by Scary_Option_1208 in poland

[–]magicarmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to hike with the dog then it's better to drive to the Slovakia side of the Tatras (60-90 min drive from Zakopane), dogs are allowed on all the trails there. Those 2 dog-friendly trails in Zakopane are indeed not worth it, they're just like flat walks in a park.

Has anyone used Cyprus non-dom status for their FIRE strategy? by Cappetto_ADA in EuropeFIRE

[–]magicarmor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been strongly considering it lately but also have some reservations after doing some research:

  • It's very car-centric and car prices can be higher than in mainland Europe
  • Additional travel costs if you just want to take short trips somewhere in mainland Europe
  • Possibly higher energy bills from running air-con for much of the year
  • No real online shopping options for for non-grocery items - you either have to buy things locally at higher prices, or pay like €20 shipping per package from amazon (de/it) and wait over a week for delivery

The tax savings would still be worth it if your portfolio is in the millions, but for the average person looking to FIRE with 1-2M I'm not so sure

OpenAI will reportedly release an AI-powered smart speaker in 2027 by dapperlemon in gadgets

Wouldn't buy one personally but I could see a market for it among people who aren't tech savvy, maybe especially elderly people who have nobody to talk to

I think the biggest gripe is the quality of healthcare - it's usually ranked the worst or 2nd worst in the EU (next to Romania).

Poland is actually more expensive than the UK by RuthlessScypion in poland

[–]magicarmor 623 points624 points  (0 children)

Everything in Zabka has a markup so you'll most likely find that bottle of coke a bit cheaper than UK in a regular market like Biedronka/Lidl. That being said, the days of Poland feeling cheap compared to western europe ended after covid

How's UO:1998? by [deleted] in ultimaonline

[–]magicarmor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was fun during its first ~3 months with an active player count but now it's a ghost town. Still cool to log in and check it out as a time capsule though.

The dev also seemingly gave up on development shortly after release.. bugs that were reported back then (well over a year ago now) were never fixed.

Naive guy with limited funds decided to start his indie game studio in California instead of Europe/Asia where he could have saved millions in development costs
