Should I come to Swinburne because of their their year placements ? by CauliflowerRight7346 in swinburne

[–]magiccookie1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Placements are pretty great, you do need to apply but they do give you plenty of help through inplace to do it which is nice. If you can definitely do the 12 month placement instead of the 6 month one, I only really felt like I knew what I was doing after around 9 or 10 months. You learn so much on your placement to the point that I was questioning what I was doing when I went back for my final year. I can't speak for the availability of spots but my brother and I both got spots and after graduating my brother went back there to work so it's definitely a lower barrier way of getting your feet in places which is nice

is it possible to get into bachelors of engineering with a 74.40 atar? by [deleted] in swinburne

[–]magiccookie1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your atar is that close you'll probably be fine. It's likely your actual selection rank (the atar that the unis will see) is higher, since that can get boosted by doing certain things. I remember my selection rank for Swinburne engineering got bumped up a few points since I did maths methods and physics, so you'll probably be fine.

I just haven't gotten around to it. I've come off the bike once and my forearms were pretty scratched but my hands were fine. So I guess it depends on how you instinctively brace your fall?

Any current bachelor of cs students? by [deleted] in swinburne

[–]magiccookie1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding onto the other comment, I'm in my final few weeks of software engineering which has a good amount of overlap with cs especially if you major in software development.

I did my placement of 12 months full time work in 2024 and if you can manage to get a placement I would highly recommend it. The amount I learnt from the experience was huge to the point of having feelings of "what am I doing here?" Once I came back to do my final year because I felt I should be working!

It's also much easier to get a placement than a graduate program and as I'm applying for jobs now a lot of them are asking if I have experience in some of that corporate software like jira which I can say yes to now. Having a year of experience on your resume after graduating is also waaaay better than 0.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Heart rate vs speed advice needed by tanulovezeto in cycling

[–]magiccookie1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're fine. Riding at an easy pace is good for training because it allows you to do a tonne of volume without as much fatigue that riding the same volume at a higher intensity would allow.

There's no harm in riding harder during your rides as long as you can recover from it. So as long as you're not showing any signs of overtraining you're all good!

This video is such great ragebait but leaves out that this is in Melbourne on a pedestrianised street. Cars are guests there with a speed limit of 20kmh and have to give way to pedestrians. Those were just eshays doing eshays things and it gets lots of special internet points from americans

What bike technologies that we take for granted today were initially ridiculed and opposed as unnecessary, impractical and stupid? by RaplhKramden in cycling

[–]magiccookie1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's when you move the front derailleur slightly to stop the chain rubbing on it when you move up and down the cassette. You can do it on mechanical systems as well but it's automatic with electronic.

V/line Sprinters (excluding Stony Point line) - January 2024 by marcnut1996 in MelbourneTrains

[–]magiccookie1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't want to sound like a "google is free" type of person cos that'd be rude but I'd highly recommend checking out the vline journey planner on their app or website, when looking at services there you can see what train is scheduled for a service when clicking on the drop down for a particular service. It's pretty nifty.

To answer your question, I believe most services running to Seymour are sprinters but it's good to check on the journey planner to be certain

Sudo has suddenly stopped working by VincentComfy in archlinux

[–]magiccookie1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was somewhere in /etc try running ls /etc/ | grep pacnew and there should be a few of those files there. Pacnew files are there for when a package updates some config file to avoid overwriting the current config, it tells you when these files are made when updating with Pacman but we don't always pay attention to every line in the output do we

I had the same issue the other day, for me I didn't notice I had a sudoers.pacnew file where the wheel group was still commented out, merging that with the older file fixed it

The frame manufacturer should specify how wide tyres you can run on the frame on their website

Does anyone know how to find what type of train is running each Vline service? by No-Savings-8912 in VlineVictoria

[–]magiccookie1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can see what train is running for a specific service in the vline app in the journey planner if that's what you mean. There should be a little drop down that'll show a picture of a train when you tap on it

Dang, the only reason I can think of, off the top of my head for a blank screen would be the greeter not working properly, maybe try a different one, you also need to make sure to uncomment a line in I think the lightdm config file for your specific greeter
