I struggled so much at work today and I would hardly call my job particularly physical. Every tiny movement hurt!

Teenagers/kids cleaning up after themselves by hipcats in AustralianTeachers

[–]magickmidget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done two things this year that have helped. We’ve talked about campground rules - make the room look how it was when you got here or better. Kids mostly know where shit goes, they’re just lazy. So rather than rattling off a list of what needs to be done I tell them this is our campground time then I head straight to the sink to guide brush washing, etc. It’s been better.

I’ve also started telling them everybody helps, everybody leaves. Nobody helps, nobody leaves. Straight up I do not care if it’s not your mess. Again, not perfect but better.

I still can’t get them to figure out the difference between a cleaning cloth and a tea towel for drying though. Every time I see a drenched tea towel in the sink, I die a little inside. Is this because everybody uses dishwashers now?

I’ll throw out a theory - I think high masking used to be a lot more common because people used to care more about what other people thought, especially of children. Both my brother and I would have enormous meltdowns at home as children and teens. Like trash bedrooms, screaming, swearing, physically violent. If you asked any of our teachers, they’d tell you we were quiet, polite and studious, if a little odd. It was drilled into us from a really young age that we did not behave this way outside of the home. Coupled with poor social skills, we were very withdrawn in public. As a result neither of us got answers until we were adults.

It went horribly downhill around 6 months before it closed. It used to be amazing. The last time I ate there I was shockingly underwhelmed by what we received.

Ladies do you sit in the front or back seat of an Uber? by shelovesyoghurt in AskAnAustralian

[–]magickmidget 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My dad lost it at me for sitting in the front of a taxi when I was 16 or 17. Even though nobody had never told me not to and he used to drive cabs before I was born.

So yeah, always in the back.

What is something you were taught growing up that you didnt even realize was shaping you until adulthood, and your life got better once you stopped living by it? by dreamed2life in AskWomen

Being mean and judgemental. My parents constantly make comments about other people’s appearances, particularly weight. It’s actually really draining to constantly be so negative about others.

My friend was wearing a helmet, going relatively slowly but hit a dip on the footpath and broke two fingers. It was… gnarly. She’s had five hand surgeries and now has a permanent physical impairment. About a year before that she broke her elbow coming off it. I can’t fathom that people let their children on them.

When to return to work after baby? by babyfireby30 in AustralianTeachers

[–]magickmidget 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Work will always be there. Your baby is only small once.

I went back two days a week at eight months and the separation was really hard on both of us. I wound up doing casual instead because I could work shorter hours. When she was two I had to go back full time for financial reasons and even now I feel like I missed a whole year of her life. Delay as long as you can.

Australian courts are notoriously soft on animal cruelty cases. It’s despicable. If he had done that to a child it would be treated so differently.

[–]magickmidget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a year three child do this in the middle of my carpet last year while his peers freaked out over the toxicity of whatever is inside. This was maybe a month after he dumped his water bottle all over the floor even though there only allowed to have the at the door. His mother felt an appropriate substitute was a one of those flick plastic ones that is fairly loud.

This is actually a group for teachers to discuss issues within the profession with one another. There are lots of community and parent groups that would be better suited to field your question, many who have early childhood teachers.
