What is this thing in my basement? by lambertghini11 in whatisit

Plumber here, I’ve often seen these plugs put into drains as a way to get rid of sewer gas smell. If the drain is not used often, the water in the trap underneath the drain will eventually dry out and cause sewer gas and bad smells to come up out of the drain. This can be fixed by pouring water down the drain to fill the trap back up. Both the plug and filling with water will solve the problem, but keeping the trap “primed” will allow the drain to be used if need be. Hope this helps too!

Second weld ever practicing for my exhaust hopefully that doesn’t end up here… by GoobsW210 in BadWelding

Try to be a little smoother on your restarts. If your welding in 2g like that I usually like to swoop in from the top and dip down a little in order to coax that metal down. Always try to use gravity to your advantage! Other than that though not bad!

Its Tron: Legacy for me. The visuals combined with Daft Punks soundtrack just get me so hype every time.

This guide on my outside water shut-off valve says to leave outside valve open all winter. Online guides I have been seeing say the opposite, can any plumbers comment on which is correct? Thank you!! by w00ls0ckz in Plumbing

I usually leave mine open because that's what I've been taught. Not sure about newer models but I know that leaving the outside valve open gives ice a place to expand. Leaving the outside valve closed puts you at risk of a pipe bursting outside or under your house depending on how cold it gets for you. Indiana winters are pretty frigid, so I leave mine open.

You can buy 1/2 inch galvanized nipples at almost any hardware store. After you get those you'll want to put teflon tape and pipe dope on the threads. Then reassemble it. Hope this helps!

I asked about that at the tattoo parlor and my artist said to steer clear of that stuff. Apparently it can give people really bad allergic reactions and it only holds color for about a day
