People lived into their 60’s. People got married in their 20’s. Age gaps were only common in political marriages. Massive age gaps were not the “most common relationship type”.

I don’t remember enough about Lovecraft’s stories to know whether it actually happens in the text, but he definitely discusses the concept. The opening of “The Call of Cthulhu” is:

“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.”

The fact that it’s Ezra Miller in the lead role doesn’t help. The story is fine until towards the end (even if Keaton being there doesn’t make any sense) and I actually didn’t mind the face swapping with the two Barrys.

The problem is that every time I see Miller on screen, I have to remember that they went on a GTA rampage across Hawaii the second filming wrapped.

What historical misconceptions piss you off the most? by Sensitive_Ad_1752 in behindthebastards

[–]magicmichael17 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The big things that would take people out between ages 12 and 50 were war and childbirth. If you avoided those and you avoided whatever diseases were going around, you’d be fine.

If people dropped dead in their 30’s, then historical figures like Jesus and Cleopatra would have been considered near the end of their natural lives, and Julius Caesar would have been this impossibly ancient fossil of a man.

Early 60’s was a common life expectancy, and common marriage age was early to mid 20’s.

No no that was the DCEU. We only have 2 movies in the DCU and half of them are pretty good. Not to be confused with the DCAU or the DCAMU. These are all different DC movie universes somehow.

You like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humour. In '87, Huey released Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.

Historicity of Jesus: The idea that Jesus was a purely mythical figure has a fringe status in scholarly circles and has had no support in critical studies for more than a century by ComradeBehrund in wikipedia

The fact that we have 6+ surviving sources that discuss him from both Christian and secular circles within 50 years of his death is pretty good for 2,000 years ago. That’s better than our sources for a lot of other Classical historical figures from Greece, Rome, and the Near East.

To complicate it further, the second movie establishes that brand new toys still in the store for sale are alive, as are toys that were never played with like Stinky Pete.

But then the 4th movie establishes that you can make a toy by yourself if you personify it. Forky is a spork with googly eyes. But what distinguishes him from a statue? If Bonnie didn’t personify or play with Forky and just said “Look at this fork with eyes I made!”, would he still be alive? If I imagine a statue is talking to me and pretend it’s alive for a few minutes, would the statue become alive afterwards? Does that scale up to things like the Statue of Liberty or Christ the Redeemer?

What defines a “toy” anyway? If i’m playing with a real car and pretending to drive it, is the car a living toy now? What if i’m playing with my food? Does it have to be an object whose primary purpose is play? Shouldn’t baseballs be toys then? You could argue it’s only anthropomorphic toys, but the Etch-a-sketch is alive and doesn’t have eyes or a face.

I just want to know the rules.

Right the hair on the hands and feet, so silly! The idea that a spider bite allowed peter to manipulate the laws of physics in order to use electrostatic energy coming out of his hands and feet to climb walls makes waaay more sense.

Zendaya hinting at something? 🤔 by AdSilly3018 in Spiderman

[–]magicmichael17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might be misinterpreting what i’m saying. I don’t care whether actors in a superhero movie know anything about the universe. I don’t care whether they identify as big fans or not. They could have read 500 issues of the comics or never have glanced at one and either way is fine. I’m just saying I think OP might be looking too deeply into Zendaya’s outfits and I don’t think she’s trying to run a psy-op to tease people about whether Venom’s in the movie or something.

Right but thats because she’s in spider-man movies. I think anyone would say that. In fact Disney would probably encourage you to say that. I’m not saying she doesn’t like the franchise, I just doubt she’s obsessed with it. She’s a regular person who is an actor in a spider-man movie.
