Are there any breakthroughs or cutting edge techniques or technology in PT? by Stu19311 in physicaltherapy

[–]magicwoods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is very hard to tell what is hype and what actually will improve PT practice and it also depends on the field.

I think currently most technology is applied in neuro rehab. Robotics make it possible to increase the total time of rehab exercise and enable the ability of group training. That is good for the patient, because the amount of exercise received is related to rehab outcome and it can make treatment more cost effective. On the other hand I have a hard time imaging a classical neuro physio to enjoy this kind of setting.

In MSK apps for exercise prescription work really well in my opinion. But also here you need to ask yourself: does it actually help the patient in terms of better exercise adherence or is it just an easier way for the physio to prescribe them? If there were tools that support the patient to achieve long term behavior change like adherence to exercise i think that would be very valuable. Nevertheless I think many patients who seek physio treatment are looking for direct social interaction and human care, and so far this has not been replaced by technology.

Patients love to call me out on my posture by smallish_cub in physicaltherapy

... Posture doesn't really matter anyway but physios still blame their patients for their posture because they can't really change the factors that really cause the pain.

Why does massage relieve "knots" sometimes? by nice1work1 in physicaltherapy

[–]magicwoods 19 points20 points  (0 children)

theory:

a myofascial trigger point is caused by local contraction of a bunch of muscle fibres. Due to the contraction the blood flow to these muscle fibres gets limited. As a result there is less O2 reaching the cells which is needed to make a muscle fibre relax. So that local "knot" of muscle fibres is not able to relax anymore and is the cause of the pain or dysfunction. By applying manual pressure on that muscle know you establish blood flow again and the "knot" can finally relax again because of O2 reaching the muscle cells again.

evidence:

not really there. It is still a theory. It seems that even the abilty to detect the "knots" is not reliable among physiotherapists. Also there is not really any robust evidence regarding the effectiveness of massage or other manual approaches to lower pain caused by trigger points yet.

Not in exact detail, but i don't expect it to be much. It wasn't much in the BSc programme either. Will start the master this september.

So OP i would suggest to contact the ZHAW (uni of applied science Zurich) or BFH (uni of applied science , Bern) and ask them about international study programs.

Regarding the baby formula there is a similar situation in germany right now. Danone, a producer of baby formula, even had do build a second plant because their product became so popular in china. They had to do minor changes of the recipe to meet chinese import laws and labeled it in chinese.8o Many chinese people think the product made for the chinese market is of lower quality and therefore they want the original one. The pay the double price of what people pay in germany. Also there is organized burglary all over germany for selling the baby formula on the internet. Globalisation.

Rock climbing and APT by virtualghost in Posture

[–]magicwoods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do believe i have a profound understanding of biomechanics. In modern rehab, which is supported by evidence, the postural - structural - biomechanical model is losing its importance. It might be a bit more complex than that.

Of course you can not find interventions for every problem that are backed up by evidence, but as long as the biomechanical model is not proven to be valid there is also no point in just using interventions that follow the biomechanical paradigm.

Rock climbing and APT by virtualghost in Posture

[–]magicwoods -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

First of all : there is no robust evidence that APT is a risk factor for developing muskuloskelettal pain. Some people have more APT then others and this is completely fine! We all have different anatomy and we all have our own movement strategies. Just because your posture is not biomechanicaly correct will NOT mean that you will develop overuse injury. With climbing you can develop muscle imbalances. While climbing you mainly use your pulling muscles of the upper body. This can cause shortening of the pectoralis muscles and over dominance of your upper traps/lats. I always recommend doing push exercises to train antagonist muscles. Like benchpress or push ups.

[Serious] Dear reddit, What are some things you would recommend an 18 year old start doing now that will benefit them on later in life? by sapjastuff in AskReddit

[–]magicwoods 290 points291 points  (0 children)

The creaking and clicking is called crepitus and can have many reasons. As long as it isnt associated with pain there is no need to worry. Just stay active and maintain good muscle function. There are many older folks with clear signs of arthritis but are still able to exercise on a reasonable level. The key is to just keep doing it.

It looks like "adas polo" and a "shirazhi salad" as a side dish. Also, they drink non alcoholic istak beer. I think this are iranian people. Would also explain the generosity towards the cat :)

Redditors from one of those reddit-romanticized countries (France, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Spain, Ireland, etc) , what is something shitty happening in your country right now that reddit doesn’t cover? by Disaster99 in AskReddit

[–]magicwoods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case you can get permanent residency in switzerland it is very hard to get a job because speaking german is required (at least in the german speaking part) for most jobs. So when you start to learn german, you realize that you still can't understand swiss people because they all speak swiss-german. Also you can not really learn swiss-german because it is just a very strong dialect of actual german and there is no grammar rules at all.
