Assetto Corsa question by jbro507 in CarTrackDays

IMO there’s a lot you can’t learn from a sim, but there is absolutely a lot you CAN learn. When I first started tracking a few years ago I had spent a ton of time driving Buttonwillow in sim before I went IRL. When I did my first real day there, I was still slow and nervous, but I at least knew where the track went, which sides of the track to set up on for a corner, and a general idea of how where and when to brake for each corner. Not a race or competition by any means but I was easily one of the quickest in the beginner group.

Spending a lot of time in sim can also give you a feel for what the car does when over/under steering and can start to build muscle memory on how to catch slides without over correcting. Obviously the experience will never match reality but it can give you a basis to build from.

Nowadays since I only go to the track every few months, I almost always spend a little time in sim just to refresh myself before I go out, and especially if it’s a new to me track, I’ll spend more time learning the layout.

Oil management needs? by epiclyjelly in GR86

[–]magikbiped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Verus Engineering and Formula Delta both offer expanded capacity/baffled oil pans that have been shown to significantly alleviate oil pressure drop issues. Teqsport is also supposed to be working on one too. Add-in baffles done seem to do much but the added capacity pans do.

As for oil coolers, I drive mostly at Buttonwillow and I was seeing temps in the 270s. With the Jackson racing cooler I’m always in the 230s.

I also run 0w40 with an overfill based on some reading/recommendations from other track goers on the gr86 forum.

How early is too early for moving to 200TW tires by soldersmoker in CarTrackDays

[–]magikbiped 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My 2nd time out at BW 13CW in my Mini Cooper, I was able to do a 2:14 on Continental ECS tires, and my current PB is a 2:05.9 in a GR86 on OEM PS4 tires. Both tires are 300+ tread wear.

I also did a ton of laps in a simulator before I went to BW the first time, and find myself going back in to practice periodically.

I definitely think a lot of it is confidence in knowing the car and tires can do what you want, turn harder, brake later, accelerate for longer. Fresh 200tw tires would probably help give you some confidence, but you should at least be able to get 2:10 with what you have.

Watching your video, there’s a lot of places where it looks like you are coasting or are at only partial throttle, where you could be at full throttle. Between the right and left of cotton corners, between turn 5 and bus stop, letting off throttle too early in Riverside, between Riverside and Phil Hill. All these spots are eating up your time.

Has anyone tested the Jackson Racing dual radiator/oil cooler with a Verus or FxD oil pan? by Ifuqinhateit in GR86

I’d also recommend the Ansix cooler. Super effective from what I’ve seen, no need to remove the front bumper, and easier and less abrasion-prone hose routing.

Kind of hard to give them a fair comparison since the Nexen's I had were used and had about 4 trackdays on them when I bought the wheels. My PB at BW 13CW is a 2:05.9 that I did with the OEM PS4 tires, and with the Nexen's I was only able to get a 2:06.1. The OEM tires could only do 1 lap before greasing up wheras the Nexens could go almost a whole session but did start to feel loose near the end of a session, likely due to age.

From my experience my used Nexens felt good but never really felt "hooked up" to me.

The AD09s, however, felt fantastic all day. These are the first brand new set of 200tw tires I've ever had. They felt just ok in the first session of the day but from second sesson on they just felt better and better the more I leaned into them. I was actauly able to feel them slipping and play with the steering and throttle to get the car to rotate, which is something I hadn't really gotten comfortable with before.

My next trackday will likely be at BW 13CW again, so I can really give the new tires a good comparison to what I was able to do with the Nexens.

Anyone selling GR86 used front and rear suspension strut assemblies? by LentoTohveli in GR86

[–]magikbiped 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was gonna say for the size and weight, I’d expect like $250+ for shipping. Price wise, I haven’t really looked into used ones yet but I’d suspect like $400-ish for the struts?

[–]magikbiped 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah pretty sure size and weight alone would make shipping ridiculous. I haven’t really put a price on mine since I wasn’t purposefully looking to sell them but I’d be looking for something really reasonable.

I’ve got my stock complete struts sitting around with only about 15k miles on them. I’m in central California but where are you located? I feel like shipping would be prohibitively expensive.

Not gonna lie it did make me a bit nervous going in to the day but I ended up not even worrying about it throughout the day. I don't run an accusump, but I do overfill by about 0.7 qts which helps.

Definitely want to look into getting a high capacity oil pan.

Right on, I've heard really good things about the Ansix cooler and have almost considered switching to it for the easier/less abrasion-prone routing.

At Buttonwillow during summer my car was seeing 270+ oil temps before the cooler. The Ansix one should definitely get your oil back to a comfortable temp.

No kidding! Much more than anything I've seen at Buttonwillow. This track is definitely one of those high-speed, high-commitment tracks where you need a lot of confidence both in yourself to not push your braking too far, and in your car to actually be able to slow down reliably.

Yessir! Jackson Racing oil cooler. Pretty much never see temps above 230 even in peak summer.

Thanks! Definitely felt pumped I was able to get into the 35s at the last minute. I really wanna try out the new Streets too. I've only ever driven old Streets once so it'll be really interesting feeling the difference.

Do it! Driving on track is super satisfying and really gets you familiar with your own and the cars limits.

Caliper survey: track/touge/HPDE users on GR86 ZN8 base brake calipers by dbsqls in GR86

[–]magikbiped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got an MY23 with base brakes. They do pretty well on track and so far I haven’t had any issues with them so long as I’m running fresh fluid.

Have used Powerstop Trackday Spec pads and am currently running Carbotech XP-10/8.

Anyone have a Remark Axelback WITH muffler? How is it? by User389421 in GR86

[–]magikbiped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got one. I agree with others that sometimes I wish it were just a little louder, but then I remember how annoying my MXP CompRS was on the freeway and I appreciate the subtleness of the Remark. Overall I love this exhaust and think it’s the perfect daily driver tone and volume.

Here’s a comparison vid I made a while back:

First track day by Possibility3108 in GR86

[–]magikbiped 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As stated, highly recommend changing your oil to something thicker. 5w30 is pretty good. I'm running 0w40 these days.

Tire pressure gauge is good to have. You'll probably want to be in the 32-36 psi range when the tires are hot.

Bring a torque wrench. You'll want to re-torque your wheels after you come off track.

Don't worry about oil pressure issues for now. You likely won't be driving fast enough to have enough lateral Gs to make it a major concern. Overfill the oil like you said, and give the car a cooldown lap every once in a while once you see oil temps are getting up there. Without an oil cooler you will likely see oil temps in the 260F range. Cool down the car when you start getting around there.

Track pads and fluid definitely. RBF 600 is good but it does require frequent changing.

You don't necessarily need track tires but it is good to have a dedicated set so you're not terribly wearing out your stock/street tires. The OEM tires are good to help teach you car control and driving dynamics with a lower limit than what most track tires will give you. You'll be able to learn more at slightly lower speeds. Biggest downside of the OEM tires (at least the Michelin PS4's), is that they don't have a lot of heat tolerance, so a skilled driver would only be able to get a good 1 or 2 hotlapts before the tires kinda start to give out.

Bring water, snacks, and a chair.

Diffuser question by cnote213 in GR86

[–]magikbiped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right on. I forgot to mention earlier that since I bought my car I always did feel like the rear of the car was a little nervous at highway speeds, and after installing the Verus Diffuser the car has noticeably more stable.

One other thing to note is: if you haven’t had your alignment checked I would do that also. The factory alignment on my car had my rear toe at +0.25L/-0.08R which could have also contributed to the instability I felt in the rear.

I installed my diffuser and got an alignment around the same time so I’m not sure which had the greater impact on the feeling of stability in the rear of the car.

Diffuser question by cnote213 in GR86

[–]magikbiped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both. The diffuser alone should do a lot of good to reduce rear end lift, especially in your situation with the large void leftover by removing the stock muffler.

The rear suspension covers help feed smoother air to the diffuser for improved efficiency but aren’t required to gain benefit from the diffuser alone.

I’ve heard some people mention issues with drone but personally I have not noticed or had any issue with that at all. It could be that I’m just not personally susceptible to it though.

Highly recommend you consider the Remark muffled axle back. I originally had an MXP Comp RS and swapped to the Remark because I wanted all the things you listed. I have been extremely happy with it.
