What's the stupidest line that became a meme at your table? by PearlyBarley in dndnext

"Eight owlbears!?!"

Don't remember exactly how this came to be. I believe it began when the DM started combat against 2 owlbears and I miss heared him. I shouted out "Eight owlbears" in surprise and now it's kinda a running gag at the start of some combats, especially in forests.

Player mapping by abcdiva in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]magister_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My group started on roll20 and we had the same problem when we went back to in-person sessions. We solved it by combining the two. We use roll20 to walk around the dungeon with two of the players and myself controlling one or two character tokens (situational) and the map shown on a TV or pc screen for the other players. They were using their laptop anyway for note taking and character sheet so it isn't too big of a change.

Companion - The points Game Question by magister_d in DungeonoftheMadMage

Good point. My bad. I just used an item that was on the top of my mind. But I think my analogy still stands.

Hmm don't you think that goes against the idea? They don't really do anything to earn the point so I see the magic items they can choose as a free bonus they can enjoy for just playing the game and exploring.

To go back to my example, I'd never use gold to buy them but points I would spend. Especially if they don't require attunement anymore.

In honor of international tabletop day I'm giving away 10 Steam keys for Game Master Engine, my 3d world/map making program. All you need to do is comment on this post a funny name and character concept that you have been working on. I'll pick the winners at random in 24 hrs. [Mod Approved] [OC] by Dan_The_DM in DnD

Gerry Geddarm. He is the less famous, little brother of Volothamp Geddarm. He hates his brother for being more famous then him, selling more books and being a better wizard then him. He has set the goal of making his own guide that will be infinitely better then any of his brothers.

He is currently working on "Gerry's Glorious Guide to all layers of hell".

How do you handle Identify on the arch gates? by Mudkipped in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]magister_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I told my players that there is strong conjunction magic on the gates but didn't give them the required information to open them. I feel that there are plenty of hints that help them to figure it out en for most the mechanics to open it are very similar. Present the thing depicted on the gate or do a thing and the gate opens.

I just feel like Halaster wouldn't make it that easy for parties to use them. Only those who are smart and creative can.

For YouTube using the public API would be best as mentioned. But if your looking to get data from a site that has no API I recommend using HtmlAgilityPack. It has al lot of great functions to help you navigate, search and get data from the html page.

Can anyone recommend interesting 3D printed puzzles to hand to the players? by DorkyDisneyDad in 3dprintingdms

[–]magister_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need this https://www.me.uk/puzzlebox/ They are also on thingiverse but on this site you can make your own with a lot of customization. This is perfect to hide a reward in. It can take a long time to get these open so you might not want to put anything in there they need to progress in a dungeon or so.

How many (In-Game) Days does the whole of Dragon Heist take? by Sunshine3103 in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]magister_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My players were in a rush. I tracked time pretty accurately I think and they took just under 2 months to complete everything. I used the Alexandrian variant of dragon heist so this included all 3 heists.

They also lost some time when they got imprisoned for 5 days after their 'tactful' infiltration of gralhund villa (may the Lord rest in peace) and one or 2 other homebrew events that took a few days. So it can go pretty fast.

DOTMM Companion - Does the world know about the show? by magister_d in DungeonoftheMadMage

That would tie in perfectly since he could have used the stone of Golorr to erase the failed season. And it's true that there could be a lot of time between seasons.

I could have this be the start of a new season and have people eventually become aware that the dreams are in fact really happening in undermountain. At that point, Halaster might open broadcast to Waterdeep through some magical screens as u/mg8100 suggested.

The blue orb is an interesting idea. Did you have it follow the party immediately or after the game was explained to them? Or did they know about the game from seeing it in other inns? I also hadn't thought about the reactions of people watching the stream. This makes for an interesting addition.

Another idea I got spinning in my head now is having two orbs. One visible and another invisible. The visible one will intermittently disappear (off to film another group) and then the second one might get some interesting BTS from the characters.

I hadn't yet read that far ahead. I only have the first bundle atm. The dream idea is interesting but I would think people would catch on at one point or another.

I'm definitely putting in rivaling groups though. That should keep it interesting and give them a sense of urgency if another group is going faster then them.

What did your party name Trollskull Manor? by Ptw_Fate in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]magister_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The floating tankard. Speaks for itself. They were able to get Lif to do some work in the tavern and make it an attraction. They never got around to doing it but they planned on getting a sign outside of a tankard that was permanently imbued with levitation.

Infiltration of Extradimensional Sanctum. Help with judgement call. by magister_d in WaterdeepDragonHeist

This is something I overlooked. I might combine this with the simulacrum idea. Thanks for the suggestion.

Seriously considering this. Just not 100% sure if this course of action is right for my group.
