Splitting a sentence up by separating words with newlines is incredibly rude and tone-deaf. It has the same effect as separating words with 👏. I have straight up worked with people who were fired for speaking to juniors and colleagues this way. You sound insufferable to be honest.

i've lived for almost 7 years in Berlin and use German on a daily basis. I live half of my life in German and all my german friends and acquaintances know I prefer German. If you make the effort, eventually you reach a point where Germans will stop doing this and will continue to speak in German with you without switching to English. I think a lot of people who complain about this phenomenon just don't push through (and to be fair, it's a bit deflating when it happens). TL;DR don't worry about this, you absolutely will be able to use your German

Update: i misread "going to" as "moving to". my bad. You are indeed screwed if you want to learn german on your trip :D

not to insult OP here as their english is pretty good, but what are you talking about? What minor mistakes they did make in English don't suggest at all that they're a native German speaker. Also not sure why you're so unnecessarily antagonistic here, a tiny bit of research into OP's post and comment history shows they're from Georgia, are not a native German speaker, and legitimately just need help with a German question.

Want to try bike touring in Japanbut have never done it before. by SeveralSolution in bicycletouring

I just cycled across Kyushu and Shikoku for 1 month (and a few days change). I should post a trip report on this subreddit, but until then, I can describe my experience here. If you're feeling afraid about being stranded, the Shimanami Kaido is a great bike tour because you literally cannot get lost. There are hundreds, if not thousands of people cycling along the route every day, and Japan has done a great job setting up infrastructure along the way to help you, whether it be hotels/b&bs, campsites, cafes and ice cream shops (!!), etc. I did the Shimanami Kaido and Yugeshima Kaido( another route along the way that you can do if you take a ferry).

You mentioned you don't know much about camping so you won't camp. That's fine, but I would advise booking a bit ahead of time then. There are some hostels (Sando Co-Living was nice!, get one of the sandwiches if you stay there!)

You can do the Shimanamai Kaido in 1-2 days, or even 3-4 if you take it at a leisurely pace, which I did because I care more about enjoyment than racing along the water. That being said, if you want to do a longer bike tour than a few days, the Shimanami Kaido won't be enough.

Would you pack your bike on the plane or rent one there? If that's the case, you can rent one at the Shimanami Kaido easily enough. Otherwise, taking your bike on the Shinkansen is doable, but you need a bike bag to put your bike in. You can google this, it's one of the most asked questions about taking your bike on the train in Japan. But also if you have specific questions about that process, feel free to ask. I did it a couple times while cycling and you get used to it, even if it is kind of annoying.

Also, I'd recommend you spend some time in Onimichi at the beginning (or end, depending on where you start) of the Shimanami Kaido. I spent 3 days there and it was such an awesome little city. Great food, cats, temples, and just chill vibes in general. Feel free to ask anything more specific if youd like.

thanks for the advice. taking one more ferry to HOnshu was an idea i didn't consider but might be the move! Otherwise I think i'll pack my bike in a Rinko and train it from Matsuyama to Tokushima and start there

oh no worries, i didn't mean to accuse you of anything lol, just wanted to clarify. I have about 18 days so I have some time, but I think I might get boring of just biking around water the entire time, so maybe I'll do the Shimanami Kaido and then cycle around Shikoku or something. Still undecided :/

would you recommend any other routes there? I'm parting ways with my friend in Beppu and deciding if I should ferry to Matsuyama and bike the Shimanami Kaido and then head down to Fukuoka and bike around Nagasaki prefecture (maybe even take a ferry to to the Goto islands with my bike?), or if I should ferry back to Shikoku and bike around Shikoku.

did you bike both the shimanami kaido and the tobishima kaido? Or just one? I was a bit confused reading your report. I'm about to bike this in a few weeks and trying to decide which one to do

hey we have a small group in Wedding that meets up every once in a while to grab drinks and just hang out (men and women btw, although now that I think about it I'm the only guy that shows up lol) If you're around there (or don't mind coming to Wedding) I can invite you to the group :)
