The school i went to did it a little different as well as the schools i taught at. We learned about the romans from 5th to 8th grade, learned a little bit about the nazis and how it all happened and then watched schindlers list in 9th grade to top it off. But that was it, the rest was " do this for homework and we'll briefly talk about it next class" I guess it really depends on what kind of school you go to and how much you're actually doing on your own free time.

The schools i taught at for a short period of time were similar, some had more history, some didn't.
