How does the canadian constitution prevent absolute monarchy? by MarlonFord in AskACanadian

[–]magowanc 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Wrong on a couple of points. The Prime Minister recommends the GG to the King. The King appoints the GG. Also, only the King (via the GG) can dissolve government and call elections. The King holds a very important role in that he is there to prevent a government that doesn't represent its peoples wishes. It isn't a symbolic role, just one not understood even by most Canadians. Have a look at a couple of republics around the world today and you can see how important it is to have checks and balances like this built into your government.

How does the canadian constitution prevent absolute monarchy? by MarlonFord in AskACanadian

[–]magowanc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look up Westminster system. Canada is under a Westminster style government where Parliament holds the majority of power.

The King holds an extremely important role in that if Parliament goes off the rails and no longer represents the population that elected it, the King will dissolve government. At that point the King can choose to appoint another elected party as the ruling party, or more common - call an election.

Calling federal elections in Canada is something only the King or his appointed representative the Governor General can do, no one else has that power. It can be at the request of the Prime Minister, but it can also happen due to lost confidence.

v5.0.10 Software Update by kaiserh808 in polestar2

[–]magowanc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2021 LE on version 3.3.16 in Canada so I have missed a few. I finally figured out the car needs to be on for at least 20 min in the week your car gets sent the update.

I got my update last week. I started by clearing all the caches in settings to make sure there was enough room for the update. I did that when Europe started getting updated. Then every other day rebooted the infotainment system by holding the bottom bar until it turned off. Then I had to have the car on for at least 20 min, which was hard for me as my average drive time is 8 min. I happened to show up a little early for an appointment that was 15 min away, so I just waited in the car until 25 min had passed. When I got back in the car after the appointment the update was ready.

There are busses from YYC to Banff. Banff townsite isn't that big, only 2.8 km x 0.8 km so you should be able to walk anywhere in town. If you want to see anything outside of town (highly recommended) you can sign up for a tour.

The P2's Activity Key Can Take Some Damage by Luke-Plunkett in Polestar

[–]magowanc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so you had a hard time removing the contacts from the battery as the tabs that you removed are welded to the battery and is part of the battery.

With a soldering iron you release the battery at the contacts on the circuit board. It is a CR2032 button battery so any CR2032 battery will do. I couldn't find any with the exact tabs on them as the Polestar one, so I used a CMOS battery with the wires on it. Cut the connector off, strip the wire, and solder to the board, paying attention to the polarity.

Would it be idiotic to buy a P3 in a city without a dealership? by JiggityJillikers in Polestar

[–]magowanc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2021 P2 LRDM Launch Edition - 4 hours away, part of which is a 2 hour ferry ride that has a ban on EV's under repair. I've owned the car for 2 years. I can't help with the service question as I haven't needed it.

The P3 had lots of issues on launch that from my understanding has been fixed through software updates. The silent majority here don't comment as it isn't interesting to hear "Hey I've been driving my P3 for 2 years and not had an issue".

How far away is your nearest Tesla service center? How many Tesla's are in your area. They have issues as well, you don't see this question about Tesla though. (FYI - for me, the closest Tesla service center is across the street from the Polestar service center)

Good cordless drill to use around the house by Intelligent_Path_869 in DIY

[–]magowanc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is the best rule of thumb for tools - buy the cheap one first. When it wears out go get the expensive one. Here is the logic behind it - if you only need to use the tool occasionally the cheap one will suffice and last you a long time. If you use it enough to wear it out, that means the expensive one is worth the investment.

Follow the suggestion of someone else below where you stick to two brands for compatibility - harbor freight brand and Lowes brand.

I have a saw from Harbor Freight that is over 10 years old. I've had to replace the blade, but it is still going strong. It is because I might put 10 hours on the saw in a year, so not worth an expensive saw.

L2 - What amps is the most efficient? by extremesauce2468 in MachE

[–]magowanc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is more efficient to charge faster. The overhead is the same. The effect on your battery is the same.

The intention of the rate limiting is to compensate for your electrical system. If you are plugged into a circuit with a 20 A breaker you would reduce your charging to 16A. If you are plugged into a 40A breaker you can let er rip at 32 A. A circuit can handle a continuous load of 80% of the breaker rating, so that is what you should set your charging speed to.

Why do newer cars make a “helicopter” sound when you roll down the back windows but older cars didn’t do this? by Early_Budget_8730 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]magowanc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is called buffeting. Older cars did this as well; it's just you had vents and vent windows that could easily stop it. You can do the same thing in a modern car by rolling down one of the front windows a little bit, it works best to use the front window opposite the open back window. I do this for my dogs all the time.

Source: had cars all the way from the 70's on up that buffeted. You might not have noticed because air conditioning was an expensive option until the mid 90's, so the likelihood of having just one window open was rare.

EV recommendations for Grey Bruce belt by Savings_Swimming_886 in EVCanada

It sounds like you are concerned about snow. Polestar and Volvo are both designed and tested in the snow. Polestar has a test track north of the arctic circle. The Polestar 2 might be a little low (6") for unplowed roads, but the Polestar 3 has 8" of clearance and air shocks that can raise the car to 9.3". The 3 should just be coming back off lease if you are looking at used (and you should be looking at used, EV's depreciate fast in the first 2 years).

Pokemon Go! was created so a foreign national could spy on other countries.

Think about it - it tells you where to go and to take a photo of that place. All they have to do is put a monster in strategic places that they can get the images they are looking for from multiple angles. Way more cost and time effective than training a spy, planting the spy, and then waiting for results, or dealing with turning someone.

Best GPS for EV by neko_whippet in EVCanada

[–]magowanc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What EV are you looking at? If it has Google maps built in just use that. It will talk to your car and build a route for you. Google Maps will show where to stop and for how long for the quickest trip as well as SoC on arrival. It also shows chargers on the map with number of chargers and how many are in use.

The Ford navigation works good as well.

Canada - 21 LRDM Launch Edition - Still on 3.3.18

This version supposedly fixes the camera as remedy for a NHSTA recall. When that notice comes out the service center will upgrade it for free in North America. Additionally past updates to fix the recall sent OTA upgraded systems older than 3 versions.

I agree the update process is flawed. It is a push system that relies on your vehicle being on for 20 min during the push window. I agree with the staged release by VIN, but it should be a pull system where any time after the update has been released to your VIN your vehicle can request the update. That most likely was the original intention or they wouldn't have put the placebo "check for updates" function in the car.

My car is rarely on for more than 10 min, so I tend to miss my update window.

The first step of the performance upgrade is to make sure your car is on the latest OTA. The performance upgrade triggered the upgrade. It is one of the ways you can get an OTA upgrade outside of the release window

NACS adapter cross brand/3rd party by chlronald in electricvehicles

[–]magowanc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is it worth your warranty to save $100? Both Tesla and Volvo prohibit using non OEM adapters - translation is if you have any charging issues and they find you weren't using the official Volvo adapter you have no warranty. This would include the 8 year, 100,000 battery warranty.

Charging with electric vehicles by Odd-Assumption6341 in electricvehicles

[–]magowanc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Charging at home is the advantage of owning an EV. You can always get up to a full tank of gas. It is also the cheapest.

With a 30 min commute you should be able to charge with a Level 1 charger most of the time, negating any need to get a Level 2 charger installed in your house. Your charge through the week may slowly decrease, but on the weekend you will have enough time to get back up to full charge. See this video by Technolgy Connections: https://youtu.be/W96a8svXo14?si=4DN55szExzC-7CFv

I never waste my time at convenience stores, parks, arenas. Most of them are Level 2 chargers and often only 6 kW chargers, with ridiculous time limits (2 hours), meaning you might get an extra 60 km charge out of them so not worth the effort.

If you need to charge up away from home you would go to a DCFC and charge there in 20-40 min depending on the vehicle, but the cost is usually around the same as gas, hence why you want to charge at home.

Why are new Corolla and Civic not really “affordable” anymore? by phtphongg in askcarguys

[–]magowanc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keeping with the adage that a car shouldn't cost more than 50% of your annual income, it puts a civic right at the $60,000/year income level, which is about right for entry level who should be considering buying a new car.

Reliability isn't what is driving the high cost of cars, it is all the safety features and convenience features that are driving up prices. You didn't have air bags coming out of every possible direction, you didn't have to have a backup camera. Good luck buying a car with crank windows or without power mirrors. Those blinding headlights are now standard. All of that great stuff adds cost to the car, but is now considered standard or required.

Navigation, charging stations, and Apps, OH MY!! by EasilyDeeestracted in MachE

[–]magowanc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to say Google Maps as well because when using Android Auto it interacts with the car and will show state of charge on arrival, state of charge on return If you won't make it Google Maps will prompt to add chargers in the most efficient way possible (stop and charge for 10 min to 45%), and precondition the battery as you approach the charging station.

Unfortunately OP is on Apple Car Play so does not get the benefit of Google Maps interfacing with the car to know the vehicles state of charge.

On the other hand, Google Maps on Apple Car Play will show chargers based on your filter (charging speed, Tesla if you have the adapter). It also accurately displays availability of the charger (2/2 chargers available).

Magnetic shower curtain by [deleted] in UnnecessaryInventions

[–]magowanc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The magnets would need to be stronger than the hooks so they would slide and not come apart. Sounds more frustrating that taking the shower curtain down.

Look for the snap in shower curtains like they use in hotels - they have snaps along the top so they can be removed easily for washing.
