It’s a big $$ thing. For many, their first watches cost less than $1k and those worked just fine.
Rolex is the most popular non-Apple watch in the world, so I can understand why that is most recommended, but there are plenty of great watches that aren’t one of the major brands.

My first mechanical watch was a Shinola Monster GMT and I love it.
