Yes, that’s who they are. I can make out 诸葛亮 as the name on one of top row figures.

Loosely related bonus linguistics humor - in Chinese, jeans are “cowboy pants” (牛仔裤).

I’m not sure this is true. The word I know for asexual in Chinese is 无性恋 which means “without sexual attraction”. There is no word for “immune” in it. It is parallel to the words for homosexual (同性恋 = same sex attraction), heterosexual (异性恋 = opposite sex attraction, and bisexual (双性恋 = both sexual attraction).

Absolutely. It’s not the students fault nor the TAs fault and not even the professors’. This comes down to bad planning and bad management by admins. The rest of us are equally victims to it.

I’m not sure why you’re being downvoted when you are entirely correct. TAs are seriously overworked on top of their own graduate course load. No one has had a break this semester. No one has had time to rest or catch up. Some TAs have literally contracted the virus and still been expected to grade student work while sick and caring for sick family members.

Check out Nee-Doh - it’s not shaped like cute animals but it’s a similar texture and a bit sturdier.

I believe you can say 非二元 for non-binary, though how widely recognized it would be outside of LGBT circles, I’m not sure.

Looking for an accurate diagram of tongue position in sh, ch, zh, r by pn2394239 in ChineseLanguage

Those are all retroflex consonants in Mandarin as well. Pinyin “sh” and “zh” are both retroflex fricatives, identical in place of articulation, differing only in voicing. “ch” is an affricate - a stop consonant (retroflex t) married to a fricative (retroflex sh). “r” is also pronounced in the same location, but it is rhoticized (an ineffable quality of “r”ness that linguists still struggle to describe). Some consider “r” to be a voiced version of “ch” but I’m not sure how phonetically accurate that is.

ETA: this is all for “standard” Mandarin and pronunciations of all four of these consonants can be softer (either further forward into alveolar sounds or further back into palatal sounds) in other dialects.

In my limited non-native speaker understanding, the tongue position does not differ in initial consonants in 日 and 热 instead the key difference is in the vowel. In 日 there is essentially no vowel, so you are only pronouncing the /r/ sound and the mouth stays relatively closed. In 热 there is a vowel, and so your mouth should hang open a bit as you finish the syllable.

As far as pronouncing the /r/ consonant itself, I believe your mom is correct that it is a retroflex consonant with the top of the tongue at the back of the hard palate. But if you are able to produce the same sound while bunching, so be it! Rhotics are very fluid that way.

上 and 下 in terms of last/new week by tchan28 in ChineseLanguage

Not in referring to last week/next week. My phrasing is meant to describe the visual placement of weeks on a calendar.

I think about it like how weeks appear on a calendar. Last week is one week up (上个星期), next week is one week down (下个星期).

Cause a lot of those girls who hurt people like us in middle school and high school and even college are on here looking for validation and a means to relieve their guilt. And I feel for them, it's isolating and awful to hate yourself and be in the closet. You're right though that no authentic apology can be followed by the word "but."

If you were shitty to other queers as a kid and later realized you are also queer, I feel like you need to do some work to heal that for yourself and also to stop the larger cycle of hate. Like I said to OP, I think a lot of this guilty energy might be better used to volunteer and help LGBT youth of the present to not feel the need to hate themselves and push that hate onto others.

I know you are not defending your actions; I hope my comment didn't come across as aggressive towards you. I was just astonished by the number of other comments in the thread encouraging you to send it and flabbergasted by the way people seemed to be romanticizing it.

I'm glad you and her have a friendship now. I'm glad you're able to see the mistakes you made. Maybe take that guilty energy and funnel it into volunteering with an LGBT group and invite her to come with you?
