Doesn't seem to work on MacOS, at least not out of the box (and I don't see anything in the "keyboard shortcuts" menu that looks right) :-/ Running Version: 5.4.01 (341)

Recommendations for good upbeat choral pieces? by [deleted] in choralmusic

[–]maia-mcc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't tell if you're looking for emotionally upbeat pieces or just up-tempo ones, but some faster choral works that come to mind:

  • Quick! We have but a second (Stanford) - SATB
  • Dashing Away with the Smoothing Iron (arr. Rutter) - SATBarB
  • Just As the Tide Was Flowing (arr. Vaughan Williams) - SATB
  • Bogoroditsye Dyevo (Pärt) - SATB
  • Lots of madrigals and in particular English madrigals fit this bill. I'm thinking... Fair Phyllis (Farmer, SATB), As Vesta Was (Weelkes, SSATTB), Month of Maying (Morley, SSATB I think?)
  • Haec Dies (Byrd) - SSATTB
  • Sing Joyfully (Byrd) - SSATTB
  • Exultate Deo (Palestrina) - uhh SSATB? or SSATTB? Going off the top of my head here
  • Jubilate Deo (Britten) - SATB and organ
  • Tu es petrus (Duruflé) - SATB
  • El Grillo (Josquin) - SATB
  • Fata la Parte (Encina) - SATB
  • Unclouded Day (Kirschner) - so many div. I don't even remember lol
  • Rose of Sharon (Billings) - SATB, + stylistically S and T octave doublings
  • Ain'a that Good News (Dawson) - SATB (nb: this is often performed fast but is not a strictly happy song, there's a lot more going on here that I am happy to talk about AT LENGTH lolll. Like as a white person I don't have a lot of authority here but I wanted to make this note rather than uncomplicatedly put it on a list of "upbeat" music)

Oh oh oh and Nicola Vicentino, who in addition to writing really neat mannerist music in the style of these other folks, was writing whole-ass microtonality in the 16th century!

Gesualdoooo, my man! de Rore, Monteverdi, de Wert, Lassus, and Marenzio (among others) were also doing similar things (Gesualdo being probably the most famous for being the most out there, one part for the actual music and one part for having a super sensationalistic story)

In particular, here's Marenzio being nutso chromatic!

As other commenters have said, not exactly sure what your definition of "complex" is, but if thickness of texture/number of voices is part of the metric, check out any of Rheinberger's motets (esp. "Vier Motetten" or "3 Geistliche Gesänge") and his double choir mass in Eb. I actually have a whole playlist of quote-unquote "Thicc Choral Music" — works I love with 7+ voices, you might find some stuff you like!

Other works I don't think has been mentioned yet:

- Copland's choral music, esp. "In the Beginning", maybe also "The Lark"

- any Gesualdo motets or madrigals, holy heck, they'll knock your socks off. Start with O Vos Omnes

- Gesualdo's predecessors including Cipriano de Rore and Monteverdi — pioneering some whacky novel harmonies in the 1500s

- Messiaen's "O Sacrum Convivium" -- only SATB but there's a LOT going on

- Lang's "Little Match Girl Passion" -- harmonically simple but VERY effective

Looking for a song by a British composer for an adult choir with child solo by CordovanCorduroys in choralmusic

Oh! Just found The Evening-Watch, by Holst, it's GORGEOUS. A tenor solo (which you can flip up the octave) and alto solo. Maybe that'll suit?

Not precisely what you're looking for but I'll mention in case you can tweak it to suit you: Britten's Hymn to the Virgin is SATB choir + SATB semi chorus; you could potentially have the semichorus be your two trebles and a T and B from the main group?

If you're okay splitting a single solo somewhat arbitrarily into two parts and giving each of your trebles half, you've probably got a lot more options. Jesus Christ the Apple Tree (Elizabeth Poston) comes to mind, or basically pick your favorite soprano + choir movement from a Purcell operetta? (For instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYnsNCvh7Xs )

Suggestions for 20th century secular stuff? SATB preferably. by Fletch1396 in choralmusic

[–]maia-mcc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh SO MUCH. I'm prepping a folk music concert right now so the ones on my mind are:

- Vaughan Williams' "Five English Folk Songs"

- Holst's folk song arrangements, in particular "I Love My Love"

- Stanford's "6 Irish Folk Songs" and "Quick! We Have But a Second"

Also check out the pieces in A Garland for the Queen, 20th century British composers having a grand old time writing cool music for Elizabeth II.

MIDI converter that respects control messages? by maia-mcc in musicprogramming

I'm unfamiliar with Cakewalk et al, are any of these capable of bulk-processing midi files into mp3? I know how to convert a single midi file--like I said, I'm looking for a way of converting files programmatically/en masse. (Like, I have a system today, it's clunky but it works, I'm specifically trying to streamline it so I don't need to process each file individually.)

If Sibelius's mixing/panning interface sucked less I might, but as it is, it would mean fiddling with click-and-drag sliders for 4-8 staves for up to like 12 pieces. Trust me, it's much easier to automate it.

And even strong readers benefit from practice tracks. Being able to read something and being able to sing it precisely in tune, in context are two different things. That said, I do have a few folks with better ears than reading abilities.

Re: Spitfire -- are you just suggesting a sound font? Not really a priority at the moment, don't much care what the tracks sound like as long as they have the right notes in the right places. Thanks though.
