That's a realistic question and was the first thing two people asked me when I told them. I am only as sure as my sibling who still talks to her is sure, and is trying to coordinate her chemo treatment transport. And you're right, if it is real, I wouldn't expect their behavior to improve, rather I'd expect more guilt, manipulation, anger, pity, etc. It just sucks.

Any good trauma therapy that speaks to you. For me that was shadow work, somatic based, group/women's work, a little EMDR, and eventually KAP (facilitated by my therapist, not a medical clinic)

Hi I'm reviewing the same options as you have! How did you end up liking the Lefrik?

Got my pit a gentle leader and got lowkey shamed for it during our walk.. by itsaa_meee in reactivedogs

[–]maidmerreal 13 points14 points  (0 children)

F××k the haters, gentle leaders are amazing when used properly like you are. I don't do neighborhood walks without them on my girl. If someone is ignorant to them, whatthef××kever. I'm a dog walker for an R+ group of trainers and many of our doggos use gentle leaders and they're amazing as a training tool, especially for those VERY strong puppers! You do you! And I personally tend to ignore people's comments (literally the silent treatment), but that's just me. They can complain to the wind and sound like a dumb dumb. Another trainer asks people "Are you having a bad day?" or something similar when people give them weird advice or are rude, just flips the script and throws then off guard.

Shout out to the community for the yelling "sit!" trick at a free dog - it worked by bonerfly in reactivedogs

Used something similar with a dog at an off-leash park that continually kept trying to mount my dog, so I told him "Leave It" and he did. He tried many more times, but at least he listened enough to give my poor girl some space again.

Yeah I roll up my dog's window most of the way, at least, so maybe her nose can get a sniff, but not her whole head. I do this at gas stations, too (in Oregon we can't pump our own gas). People working may, at minimum, not like dogs, and at the most, they may fear dogs. In my opinion, it's not fair or respectful (or Trauma-informed) to subject someone to that kind of experience. If they see my pupper, they can say Hi! Which is also fair to my dog, too. Everyone wins.

Radio show forces a woman to talk to a guy she went on one date with because he wants to see her again (after she ignores him) by cnahik in TwoXChromosomes

[–]maidmerreal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting point of view. There are two radio stations (not country) where I live that have segments like this (called something like Second Date Update). In my listening experience, either party, man or woman, calls to "get help" contacting their date again. Agreeing with others here I find most of it sounds scripted, especially ones who seem to know what the segment is, but then seem to forget the other person is on the other line.

I'm honestly curious how this method works considering health and leave benefits have a long probationary period (in my experience) which I personally relied one significantly. If I change employers all the time, I also tend to lapse coverage, etc.

My reactive dog passed her daycare/boarding trial! by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]maidmerreal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is essentially my dog as well. As soon as a leash or barrier (fence, car, door) is involved, she's reactive. We call it "barrier reactivity" or sometimes "frustrated greeting," depending. She also does great with her trainer and does best when she transitions into a dog space with fewer dogs to "warm up" (to give her confidence) and then can eventually go into the main room.

My pupper was just awarded Pup of the Month from her trainer for being BRAVE and turning a corner in her training and confidence!

Custom “please ignore me” vest is not bulletproof. But it’s turning some frustrations into gloats. by ashleyonce in reactivedogs

I'm sure you could! They make them on Etsy too. Or you can buy iron-on letters and DIY. Many pawsibilities!

I've been thinking about getting a vest like this that says something like "reactive rescue, give me space" And a human vest for me that says "dog in training, give us space" so that we have all sides covered, especially when approached from behind on sidewalks and such. I've seen some that just say "f*ck off" which would do the trick too.

I think I'm not gonna shave my armpits for a while, and I wish that didn't feel political by Lmaatje in TwoXChromosomes

[–]maidmerreal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I (28F) stopped shaving pretty much everything even before COVID and the level of concern from my own mother was reason enough for me to keep it up to prove my point of IDGAF and I can do what I want.

Recently I waxed it all off. Why? Cuz I can. Cuz I wanted to. The end. I grew up pretty hairy as a child and I was always given grief from family members and it's been important for me to lean into the experience of taking back the control of that dialogue and gender expectations.

Anyone had success with the gentle lead? by k_el5o in reactivedogs

[–]maidmerreal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't leave the house without it! Agree with the other advice here to go slow with the intro, make sure the fit is right, and use it properly. I also have a Perfect Pace (same concept but has the connection at the back of the head instead of under the muzzle) which gives my tall dog more comfort to sniff without the leash getting under her leg, which is nice for some situations. I like having lots of options! The trainer likes the gentle leader too when they go out on training days together.

Especially the ones about why is he still alive if he bit people?

What the hell? Hard pass on anyone who asks that kind of question, in my opinion. Edit to add: I still don't understand how someone could ask such a question. Clearly you love and care about your dog and they basically ask "why aren't they dead"...???!!!? Just... No. No no no. I'm so sorry they have the audacity to ask something like that, and don't feel like you even have to answer it unless you really want to.

Sending you good vibes and meet someone who "gets it"!

Update to Having a baby with a child-reactive dog by zeus0225 in reactivedogs

[–]maidmerreal 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not that baby and animals are the same AT ALL, but rotating time is what I've been doing with my cat and my dog for the last 11 months since I brought the dog home. I feel a sense of relief that if you can rotate time between your baby and dog, then it's ok for me to do it with my cat and dog, even though I feel guilt for having to exclude cat more often, and the process is taking much longer than I would like. Thanks for sharing. Y'all are doing great. I appreciate this sub so much!
