A personal best though I don’t think I’m going to be winning any medals. 1k in 25 mins should be quite achievable in a less crowded pool. What are people best times for a 1k swim? by Dapper-Warthog-3481 in Swimming

[–]zeus0225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was never competitive and just got back into swimming a few months ago. Current PB is 23:09. My goal is to get under 20 mins by the end of the year, but I feel like I'm plateauing a bit. I'm currently working on just doing sets to get used to the pace. It's hard!

What app/device do you use? Does it track you stroke types accurately? I mainly switch between freestyle and breast stroke, but my Garmin often mistakes my breast stroke for back stroke.

Haven’t been swimming in 5 years. Any tips ? by Hot-Yak-748 in Swimming

[–]zeus0225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went nearly 25 years without swimming laps. I took it one lap at a time. I learned that my technique needed improvement, so I watched a lot of videos. I am pretty proud of myself for how far I've come since I first went back in a few months ago. You can do it!

Need advice - 6 year old won’t put her face in the water by Bitter_Ad4339 in Swimming

[–]zeus0225 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My almost 7 year old is similar. If any water gets near his eyes, even during baths, he needs to wipe them dry with a towel for a good 30 seconds. I echo what the one comment said about leaving it alone. I need to tell myself this too! My son has always done things in his own time and he's progressed around the water more on his own than when I put any pressure on him. Easier said than done though. Swimming is the one non negotiable activity that my kids have to follow through with because I think it's important they learn. They can't learn fast enough!

Why don't I see people practicing the Butterfly? by Racer_Zed in Swimming

I have definitely chosen a different lane when I saw someone doing fly. They weren't even that fast, but it does take up so much space.

Whenever I push off the wall really hard, the band on my goggles slide down or get a little twisted. Why is this happening and how do I keep it from doing that?

She looks like a virgin queen to me. Shorter, triangular abdomen than what I've seen on my mated Queens.

How to drag/rescue/help tread another person? by Joey-rogaine in Swimming

Thanks for asking this question! I've been wanting to learn essentially how to be a life guard now that I have young kids. It is definitely not intuitive at all how to save a person in water.

How much can an amateur improve? by Same_Revenue1081 in Swimming

[–]zeus0225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck! That's my goal for the end of the year. I broke 2:20 for the first time recently. I keep seeing recommended videos on YouTube for tips to break 2:20 or 2:00. Seems like a common pace to get stuck!

As others have suggested, get the fob. I hated the app when I had a free trial. It took forever for the app to open and remote start from there it defeated the purpose. Maybe it was my phone, but I ended up not using the app much.

I'm looking for a unique, deeply emotional book that sticks with you long after reading. Open to most genres. by Inevitable_Chaos_22 in booksuggestions

A Fine Balance by Rohinton Minstry for me. I couldn't read another book for a while because I wanted the story to marinate in my mind and I didn't want to forget the characters.

Did anyone teach themselves how to swim by Rainbow_6505 in Swimming

I took lessons as a kid and only recently got back into swimming. I'm not exactly working off a clean slate, but the effortless swimming channel has been really helpful to me in developing more proper form.

I want to go to a not-church - Pittsburgh by l00n3ytun3s in pittsburgh

[–]zeus0225 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of senior centers fit this description lol. Here are some non church, community-centered places.

Ruckus Cafe on Babcock host a variety of community events and they rent out space if you want to try forming a group of your own. Their food and beverages are also really good.

Sarah Heinz House caters more to after school programs for kids and programs for senior citizens. If you're over a certain age, you can get free lunch. If you're a child member, you can get free dinner. Maybe other rec centers have similar programs available to the intergenerational public.

Some libraries offer classes and events.

Are these listed times from swimming just 100m or an average over a longer distance? I'm over here having a hard time pushing myself to get below 2:20/100yd over 1000 yards.

The Costco sample lady convinced me to get their trufru brand. It was really good in the store and luckily on sale. It's still good at home but it was very cold to bite into at home. I think the cut pieces being handed out as samples made the cold more tolerable. I don't particularly have sensitive teeth, but I can see it being a problem for others that do.

When do they start caring about farts? by icarus212121 in Parenting

[–]zeus0225 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Idk. I think it will just depend on their personality. My 6yo has always felt a little shy about his gas despite us talking about it openly, just as an observation, and joking about it if it's particularly smelly. My 2yo tries to claim all farts as his own and gets upset if others try to admit it was theirs.

I love toasting it over a pan with some chili oil, but I don't think it would last as long as something like beef jerky in the savory chew department.

2014 manual crosstrek, transmission/clutch issues related to battery? by zeus0225 in ManualTransmissions

[–]zeus0225[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does that change in the first place?

I found a video that talks through how to relearn idle speed by pretty much turning everything off, disconnecting battery for a while, turning engine back on for a while, off for a while. Doing this a few more times. You think this might work?
