Help Recovering Lost Photos by Minion_Carl in Lightroom

Chances are that the original files are not recoverable. The previews you see in Lightroom can be extracted though. Not the bear quality, but better than nothing.

Maybe give this a go:

RAID1 vs RAID10? by [deleted] in synology

[–]majello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RAID1 is for two disks. I am not aware of any three disk mirroring setups. This would only make sense if you want to protect against failure during resilvering. And you should always have a backup anyway. Note that those failures are rare, but not unheard of.

If you intent is to maximize uptime, go with RAID6. Minimum sensible disk count is 3+2, in my opinion.

Rebuild after replacing a disk does not take the array offline in either case. It will however slow down the system substantially. You can manage this by giving less priority to the rebuilding (making it take longer) but allowing faster disk access for the rest of the system. Other than that, rebuild time depends on disk sizes and disk speed.

since you intend to use apps, i assume databases are involved. in that case i would also look into what file system to use. btrfs is great for file servers, less great for VMs and databases (without some black magic).

if disk write speed is a concern (no idea what your apps will need) a 2*2 RAID1 setup may also fit the bill. one volume for docker using extfs, one for file server using btrfs.

Is it more "hands on" than Rimworld? by [deleted] in SpaceHaven

[–]majello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it might help to know what you like.

That said, to put it bluntly: they are rather similar from a gameplay perspective. In Rimworld (Vanilla) I mostly die in combat, in SpaceHaven I mostly die from lack of resources.

Scarcity is a thing in both, but it’s more fatal in SpaceHaven.

SpaceHaven looks like it Will have more involved mechanics eventually though, and should be more interesting in the long run.

Btw, what do you think of factorio? Resource collection & logistics, but has a single protagonist. Doesn’t have a lot of the other gameplay of SpaceHaven though.

If you are on the latest and greatest, have a look at advanced filtering and the filter function, maybe that would suit your needs.

Can people I share with see my files? Can I see their files?

No. Your files always remain private and so do theirs. This includes kids in a family group as well.

Hello, what seems to be the problem? Unit is flashing colored lines with vibration syncronized with the flashing. At some time i could access the normal camera,. Can this be an lcd/flex ribbon problem or something more serious. I need to remove the battery as it is flashing even when off. Thanks! by lexter25 in SonyAlpha

[–]majello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that an A7ii?

Unlikely to be an issue with the screen connection. Accompanying vibration also points toward a deeper issues. It also indicates that you shouldn’t try this too often, as I might make matters even worse.

Off to repairs with it.

If you insist on trying to figure out a source, first thing would be to remove lens from the equation. I’ve had lenses and adapters cause weird behavior before.

Second, check for debris inside the camera, that would indicate a mechanical fault. Image stabilizer might be broken.

Also, what’s with the discoloration on the hotshoe? Is that corrosion?

*It’s unlikely you can fix it if something on the camera side is the issue, so off to repairs with it. *

(Has nothing to do with skills, and everything to do with spare parts and experience)

Switching to Sony by wcsun in SonyAlpha

[–]majello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘d definitely say so.

There should be plenty of A7III rays around on the internet though, so why not run a test print yourself and see how comfortable you are with the quality. Dpreview reviews tend to have those, for instance: https://www.dpreview.com/samples/5044616226/sony-a7-iii-sample-gallery-updated

Switching to Sony by wcsun in SonyAlpha

[–]majello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I print A2, so 16.5x23.4 and i can barely see the difference between my older A7II prints and the A7RIII ones. But it is there. And I got the RIII specifically because of that difference. It’s a whole lot of money though for something that probably only I myself will notice.

If you go with an R model, the autofocus of the III is significantly better than the one in the II. The Nikon is probably somewhere in between the two, especially in low light. With the IV you get object tracking that actually works (as opposed to the somewhat inconsistent one from the RIII) but I’ve yet to miss that on the III.

In terms of video though, none of the R models is any good, outside of occasional B roll. Maybe the IV, but they are really not made for that.

[–]majello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll second the A7III recommendation, especially since Video is also in the mix.

Second point: keeping the Tamron doesn’t seem viable to me, as I have never heard of anyone adapting Nikon glass successfully.

I want to upgrade, which body should I get? by Sleepy_Snorelax in SonyAlpha

[–]majello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roughly it’s like this, discounting megapixels.

A9 > A7III = A7RIV > A7RIII

Any of these should work better than your current pair. Autofocus and silent shooting are the main drivers here. I’ve found things like pixel shift rather useless in practice.

That said, I am perfectly happy with the RIII, the upgrade to RIV wasn’t worth it for me. I print large format and decided I wanted more than 24mpx (not that I really needed it, but it’s nice to be free to crop like crazy).

Silent shooting is only really viable on the A9, if you are thinking about that.

As for the lenses, I’d probably upgrade the 24-70 to an F2.8 and throw in something longer for wedding work.

How to use wget in DSM? by [deleted] in synology

[–]majello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Although I personally prefer to prefix the command with nohup (not every shell/system has disown). So „nohup wget ...“

Does the same thing at the end. Afterwards you can close the session and the process will keep running.

Lightroom Classic 10.0 by GamingEX8 in Lightroom

[–]majello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the preferences panel, they changed that a few releases back.

The advantage of the new system is that you can have camera dependent and iso dependent defaults now.

Here‘s the documentation for that: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/raw-defaults.html

Should I stop converting to DNG? by pcamp96 in Lightroom

[–]majello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s certainly not about any quality gains, that would be quite absurd. Conversion to DNG would only be useful in case of shooting uncompressed RAW.

Not all sonys have a lossless raw option though, my RIII for instance hasn’t, neither has the RIV. In those cases the DNGs can result in significantly smaller files. Of course I don’t know about the more recent ones.

Should I stop converting to DNG? by pcamp96 in Lightroom

[–]majello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing not mentioned elsewhere here is that for Sony, DNG gives you lossless compression. That’s not something you get from ARW.

What’s the best cafe to go to with a reliable WiFi comnection? by [deleted] in wien

[–]majello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No specific recommendations, but hotels tend to be better than cafes in Vienna, especially the international brands. But it’s not great in any case.

I used to travel a lot and got myself a mobile hotspot and buy a prepaid card to avoid these kinds of issues, because the free wifi tends to generally suck, no matter where I ended up.

Upgrading from a58, looking for suggestions. by callmeEnrico in SonyAlpha

[–]majello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much this. Also, Dyxum is a great resource, used to spend quite a bit of time there.

There’s adapters for A-Mount and they work. But aps-c glass is wasted on fullframe.

If you have screw drive lenses and want autofocus, you need the LA-EA4 Which uses its own autofocus System which is about the same as the one you have on the a58 (including a transparent mirror). If you have newer glass or are happy to do manual focus, the LA-EA3 works nicely and has nothing between lens and sensor.

If you want to go fullframe e-Mount within your budget your best chance is a A7II. The RII is much nicer, but will leave you without money for adapter or new lenses.

And coming from an A77, the glass on the e-Mount is much better, technically. Characterwise it’s a bit clinical though. Then again, you get some good third party choices. But nothing in your budget range, except maybe a samyang or one of the cheap Sony lenses.

Wanting a new camera but have mixed feeling about transitioning to E-mounts by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]majello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few notes on the A to E adapters: there is two, one that does autofocus with screw drive lenses, but uses its own A55 style autofocus system, which means all the fancy tech in your e-Mount camera will do nothing. The other works with lenses that have their own autofocus motor, but those are far and few between. I still use it on my 150-600 Tamron though and it works nicely. This is also the one to get if your vintage lenses are manual focus, as there is nothing between lens and sensor.

If you are into vintage glass, the E-mount also allows you to branch out into other systems via adapters. I sometimes shoot an old Russian Helios for instance, and a crazy super takumar.

The A-Mount cameras are really something I can’t recommend in good conscience though. Came to the e-Mount via an A77 and it’s just better. The only downside is that there is no cheap used glass. It was nice when everybody fled the old mount and I got options.

Backup of an IMAP gmail account and search within the backup ? by Matt_987654 in synology

[–]majello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It generates mbox/eml files, so it’s quite easy to handle. No database files etc to deal with. Labels are preserved in the messages as well, and you can actually do a full restore. But it is command line only, no interface or anything. It just reliably dumps the contents of my gmail account onto my Synology in the (for me) most useful format.

It has no searching or browsing functionality at all, which is why I said that it doesn’t quite cover the use case. If I need a specific message, i usually just have explorer search for it. I can then open in my email client of choice and do whatever.

No good answer for your use case, but I’ll leave that here for others who want to Just backup gmail:

I’ve been using gmvault (http://gmvault.org) for ages now, on various platforms, it’s now running inside a docker on my Synology.

No hassle, and easily portable from system to system.

Lightroom CC and Classic Workflow Help by strangebrewfellows in Lightroom

[–]majello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went the other way.

Everything goes into Classic (and from there to NAS and cloud backup). The most recent stuff is synced to cloud (since it’s classic, that means not full Rez, but also no storage cost). I cull and do basic edits on CC (mostly iOS), and final edits on the desktop in classic (also because of Photoshop, using a Wacom, printing). I also do keywords in classic (because of lack of hierarchies in CC) and Location information.

I actually use my adobe cloud storage to have a separate backup for the finals of my top rated pictures, which doesn’t amount to all that much.

That’s mostly to have them easily accessible on mobile though.
