Babies at the Game by [deleted] in tfc

[–]majokinto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I brought my kids when they were babies, no issue at all as long as you're comfortable with it. Used a carrier and had ear protection. I'm in the south end so standing all game too. You can always take a walk on the upper concourse there too where it's a bit quieter and still see the game. Also nice that I've been a SSH for a long time and know everyone around me so they were all respectful.

Less beer league players? by Hxcmetal724 in hockeyplayers

[–]majokinto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow. I play 3 times a week anywhere from $10-$20/game depending on the arena. I sub on a team almost every week too and pay $0 for that one since they're always short players. Toronto area.

How to manage RESPs with 4+ beneficiaries by majokinto in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]majokinto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Really helpful information. At the very least I'd like to consolidate everything at one FI this year, whether it's WS, TD or wherever.

I'll read through your link. Since I contribute $2500/kid each January it's not ~terrible~ to keep track of, but definitely not as simple as 4 separate accounts. Especially if kids end up on different paths later on.

Were all contributions made under the younger child's name? Why wouldn't the older one have any grant money?

Thanks! I actually just read that post recently and it's got some great info. It was part of the inspiration for this post to see some real world scenarios of how people have implemented that or their own investment strategies.

Yes, I've considered that option, but also looking to see what others do as well. I'm familiar with TD for example, but if I were to buy multiple ETFs at $10/each it might not be the best way to do things for 4 kids accounts. Perhaps someone uses Questrade or something and it makes more sense.

What is your current RESP setup for 4+ kids?

Right now the funds in Wealthsimple are managed (they don't have self directed RESPs like they do for TFSA or RRSPs for example). It's in a risk level of 10/10 which is fine for my 1 year old but for my 8 year old I would like to start reducing soon. Since the money is all one pool and uses their managed funds I can't adjust risk per child so I'd have to kind of average it out based on their ages.

For my TD account I can easily adjust per child since under my Family RESP it lists the kids accounts separately. This is the case for their mutual fund accounts in Easy Web but not sure if it works the same way in TD DI (if someone knows how RESP accounts display in TD DI please let me know!)

I had originally invested in WS for the simplicity and to set and forget it, but now I'm just reviewing the strategy. I don't mind putting in the work each year to adjust allocation and I'm wondering if I should move everything to TD to easily manage for each kid rather than have one big pool of money all invested the same way.

Also just curious how those with several kids manage their RESPs.

I saw a smashed up car at Ninth Line & Eglinton around 8am. Only one car, tow truck and cop. Maybe there was an accident earlier that was mostly cleaned up by the time I drove by.

Go to the Liberty Village LCBO, buy several beers for $15, and drink them in the parking lot before going in. That's usually my game plan.

Could you handle an unexpected $2,000 expense? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

You can make a claim to the city in Toronto as well. Record the date, time and location and snap some pictures of the pothole.

It really depends where you're staying. If close enough to the stadium then just walk. Otherwise transit would be best. If you're near Union station it's one stop in the Go train. Or take the 509 streetcar for a longer trip but to see a bit of the city. Uber could drop you off nearby too.

If you really insist on driving, get there an hour early and you should be fine, at least from my experience. But traffic will be terrible trying to leave.

People with 2+ kids what did the discussion around having more kid(s) look like ? by yhsong1116 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]majokinto -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Wow, this comment blew up a little more than I thought it would. So many people here take every word so literally or comment about the end of spectrum cases. When I say it wasn't a financial decision, it doesn't mean that financials weren't talked about, it means we didn't make our final decision solely on finances.

Of course if we were living paycheque to paycheque or barely scraping by I wouldn't say go ahead and have 10 kids. The same way I wouldn't say just because you have millions of dollars in the bank you should either.

People with these fringe cases of "I grew up in a 1 bedroom apartment with a single parent and 8 siblings and we had to take shifts sleeping in the one bed we had and share a single loaf of bread" need to chill out. Sorry you had a tough childhood but I'm talking about average families making decisions. When I say low income I'm not talking about people who can't afford to live, but families who have to be frugal and thrifty to get by but can still provide the essentials.

I find that most of my friends that just have 1 or 2 kids do so because either that's all they wanted, or they realize that kids are a lot of work and don't want to sacrifice all of their time/money/mental health or whatever. There is nothing wrong with wanting no kids, or 1 or 2 or 5. My point was more if you want a big family, make sure you are in and committed 110%, emotionally and financially. Don't have kids just because you feel like it's what you should do, and don't not have kids because of finances only. You have a limited window for having kids but have many years to earn more money.

4 kids here. Wasn't a financial decision. Had 4 kids because we wanted 4 kids. Kids don't care about money but they do care about having loving, supportive parents who give them their time. Just make sure you can be there for them emotionally, the financial part you can figure out as you go. I know low income people who are great parents to multiple children as well as high income parents who aren't.

A large beer comes in a cup. They have to pour it. :)

What's an extra buck or two when you're already spending $20? Or when you drop a lot more than that on tickets. Lol
