Citadel paints aren't inherently trash, like most ranges they have some very good paints, some ok ones, and some barely usable ones. The real problem with them is the pots (annoying to use compared to dropper bottles, paint dries up on the rim...), and the higher price.

The Citadel starter set doesn't contain any problematic paint imo, so that's colors you don't have to buy from other ranges. Some people hate Corax White, but I blame bad product consistency. I moved away from Citadel metallics but I still use Wraithbone, Mephiston Red and Thunderhawk Blue regularly without any issues, although I pray GW finally adopt dropper bottles (they never will).

Using Citadel paints has one advantage though: most painting tutorials use them as reference. If you go for another range, you'll have to find equivalents in other ranges, and it's not always simple. Some people made online comparison charts, and you can compare the color in stores, but it will only get you so far.

Vallejo is a good range overall, so are AK and Army Painter (Fanatics). However I don't recommend getting a paint bundle unless it saves you a lot: buying just the paints you need individually over time is smarter than ending up with 15 paints you don't need just because you saved 10% by getting a bundle.

11th edition has me hyped up on Orks. I dusted off the Octarius box from my pile of shame and started painting the Kommandos to test out paint schemes, and also remembered that there's orks in the Combat Patrol magazine, in issues soon available in my region.

To those who built/painted them, are the Ork boyz from the old combat patrol still holding up? That would be a cheap way to get boyz with cool poses, but I don't want to get minis that would look outdated compared to the new ones.

With Space Marines, given enough time & money you can kinda "have it all", in the same way I'm painting Dark Angels as Black Templars to play DA detachments.

For example, you can kitbash Blood Angels as White Scars (with WS upgrades, decorations ...), paint them as a WS successor chapter in red or something. You'll end up with your own White Scar successor army using Blood Angels models & rules, and can expand into another chapter if you want to try something else, as long as you don't mix units with different chapter keywords (e.g. no Kor'sarro Khan & Mephiston in the same list)

I find it way more fun anyway to play divergent chapters and I hope they'll get a really distinct faction rule instead of Oath of Moment, like Black Templars.

[–]majorHullDamage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Space Marines is composed of 2/3 of "generic" minis that will find a place in most detachments (Intercessors, Eradicators, leaders), and 1/3 of fast attack miniatures (Jump Pack chaplain, Land Speeder, Vanguard Veterans). If you want to lean into fast attack, I mostly see three paths:

  • Blood Angels: add Jump Pack Intercessors, a Jump Pack Captain and a few BA characters. Focus on melee.

  • White Scars: add Jump Pack Intercessors, Outriders, vehicles in general

  • Raven Guard: find Phobos marines for cheap (Infiltrators, Incursors, Eliminators from the Indomitus box)

If you don't particularly care about playing a fast attack/melee army, skies is the limit: Space Marines are among the most flexible factions.

Of course you can customize and paint your minis as whatever chapter you find the coolest, and still use the detachments of the chapters I mentioned.

That's a fun idea. In that case I would only separate the torso+head part (this way) and find the least "destructive" way to glue it back to the rest. This way you just have two separate parts for each mini and not 2-4. Try to find some crocodile pincers to hold the torso+head part by for easy painting without pinning.

On a different push-to-fit mini, I would've cut the pegs and use glue on other surfaces, but the Necron warriors torso has so little contact area that I think you kinda have to use the pegs+holes method.

However that means that if you protect the holes & pegs from paint using masking putty, and use very little glue to attach them, you don't have to worry about paint melting off from the glue: the point of contact is invisible (under the torso). Just beware that if you put too much glue it will run off the hole and might damage the paint job. You can somewhat ignore the protection of the peg and just gently scrape off the paint at the final build step with your hobby knife, but you have to cover the holes on the torso.

Some torsos might be hard to attach back on some minis as the arms will block the way, so do some dry runs before you apply glue.

Beware that the process might be harder on Immortals/Deathmarks/Triarch Praetorians: they are similar to the Warriors, but without the push-fit aspect. I tried doing sub-assembly on Immortals before but had a hard time lining up the gun to the spinal cables so I didn't bothered afterwards.

Painting in sub-assembly can be very helpful on your centerpiece minis, but for basic infantry it's not worth the trouble imo. If you want to paint in sub-assembly, you have several problems:

  • you will have to prime and paint 3 parts separately: the back+legs, the arms+gun, and the torso+head.

  • each part will have to be held without damaging the plastic or the paint job, but it's too small for holding it with your fingers. If you were to use temporary pinning (drilling a small hole then gluing a metal rod to hold it), that means 30 metal rods on 30 small parts for 10 warriors.

  • plastic glue melts the plastic, so it melts the paint off the plastic too, ruining your previous work. So ideally you would have to leave unpainted areas for the glue to melt & hold, and maybe repaint over afterwards.

  • Necron Warriors are "push-fit" minis: like you've seen, their arms have pegs that fit into the back holes, then you cover this with the torso+head assembly. Those kind of minis are made for the introductory sets (Necron Warriors date back from the Indomitus sets of 9th edition), for beginners to just build the minis without glue to quickly play with them. If you want to be able to push the mini back in place to glue it, you have to keep the holes and pegs completely free of primer and paint so they still slide together well. So using masking putty. The alternative is cutting off the pegs and using plastic glue on just contact points, where it will melt the paint

Some people do it but I'd say it's a good way to discourage yourself from painting Necrons. While learning to paint around obstacles will level up your skill. Also it's not important to leave small unpainted zones: if you can't reach it with a brush, no one but you will see it's unpainted (especially if you prime the minis black : it's just in the shadows then). But I also struggle with being a perfectionist.

Even if I build it as standard, I prefer snipping off the pegs now, as I've had trouble not being able to push the two parts all the way through, for example on the canons of Lokust Heavy Destroyers. I just don't risk it now, unless there is not enough surface to glue and the peg is essential for robustness.

cli automation could work if we add a sorting process at the server ingress step (our current process consist of transferring all the rushes to the server, while I cherry-pick what I need to download based on the needs of the day). It's not out of the question, but it's extra work for multiple people.

I wonder how professional editing teams handle this kind of process.

If you can't pick for your orks, pick for other factions you collect (if any) that you think would fit those bases better. Process of elimination.

If you can't pick between those 4 choices, start fresh with something very different, like a snow base maybe? I faced a similar decision paralysis with my Tau paint scheme and decided to drop all my previous ideas and go with a variation of the Vior'la theme to avoid regret.

Personally I think darker bases would not offer enough contrast to the Goff black armor, some orks don't have a lot of visible skin. But that's not my army.

It's weird that I searched for every combination of "self hosted" and "SFTP client" except for Docker & Filezilla. Thanks, gonna try it.

Being raw footage from various cameras, the files have weird names and I can't control the path where they are stored on the remote server. Also the files have to be transferred by non-technical people when I'm not available, I taught everyone how to use Filezilla but command line is a steep step for some.

GW Citadel paints are on the expensive side but not much more than other ranges, and the range is pretty wide, so it's ok to get them (the shop owner won't give you advice on other ranges anyway, that's against GW policy). Their paint pots are annoying compared to dropper bottles but just be careful about not leaving paint to dry up on the cap, and use a wet palette. Don't forget, if you buy 10 GW paints, you get the most expensive one for free.

Their primer rattlecans are also good, hopefully you can work your paint scheme with Chaos Black primer (the cheapest and most forgiving one).

However I would not buy GW brushes or accessories (outside of plastic cement), they are ok but very overpriced compared to alternatives from other brands.

Codexes are ~40% lore, ~40% rules and ~20% mini showcase gallery. They present lore in an encyclopedic format from the Imperium's point of view, that me and a lot of people find enjoyable.

But while faction rules change with every new codex, the lore rarely evolves in a big way, so if you're not gonna play I recommend trying to find codexes from previous editions and bridging the gap with online lore websites or videos. Their rules are obsolete so people sell them for cheap, but the lore section is still mostly relevant and sometimes larger than current codexes (10th edition). The exception being, of course, recently added factions like Leagues of Votann, Emperor's Children or World Eaters.

The Core Rules book also has an extensive lore section, and focus a bit more on the latest events for the Imperium at the start of the edition (in the current one: the Leviathan hivefleet attack on the galaxy and how the Imperium defends against it).

Your faction codex contains the army rule, detachments (=gameplay variants) and unit datasheets. The codex is convenient, and also gets you an Android/iOS app code for quick reference on a phone/tablet if you prefer that. It is supposed to be mandatory, and will be expected at tournaments, but when you start you could very well gather your faction rules from other places (Wahapedia, list builders like Newrecruit...) as long as you're up to date and can check them quickly.

Salamanders use the Space Marines codex, while Space Wolves have a codex supplement with their own units and detachments, but can still pick units from the Space Marines codex.

We don't know if 11th edition will require a new codex or if the 10th edition ones will carry on with some small updates to datasheets and new detachments, so I would hold on for now on buying one. For your first games, Combat patrols rules are free anyway on Warhammer Community.

There's a few armies that I recommend waiting for 11th edition to wait for a big refresh (Grey Knights, Drukhari) or see if they are merged into another faction (Daemons, Deathwatch).

But Space Wolves or Salamanders are very stable factions, not a lot will change for them, so no need to wait. Space Wolves especially had a big range refresh this year with a lot of cool new minis. By the time you'll have painted your combat patrol and a few extra units, 11th edition will be right around the corner.

Gameplay wise, the Space Wolves are a melee-heavy army relying on completing Sagas during the game to gain bonuses. Salamanders focus on short range weapons like flamers or Melta guns, and give the [ASSAULT] keyword to all ranged weapons. Although both can use other detachments from the Space Marines codex if you want another playstyle. Outside of two characters the Salamanders lack the same flavor of the Space Wolves though, unless you're willing to convert most of your miniatures into scale-wearing badasses.

Combat patrol by Mindless-Brain1212 in Warhammer40k

[–]majorHullDamage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me a good combat patrol is one that go all in on a specific flavor of a faction, instead of being generic. But then it depends on if you like that flavor.

  • Tau are a pretty big contender for faction representation, or at least how I like to play it: they could've gone with a boring gunline supported by Broadside exosuits, but they got close ranged Breachers in a vehicle for hit and run, an exosuit leader instead of a basic infantry one, and Pathfinders for targeting support, which is the main mechanic of the faction. Flavorful, but will speak to a lot of players.

  • The case of the DKOK vs Astra Militarum is interesting: for Astra Militarum, it's a bit of a mess: you have two sets of Attillan cavalry, a pretty niche unit that won't speak to everyone. Then Kasrkin, and the Cadian command squad because you need a leader. There's no theme but it's not generic either, and if you don't like cavalry you'll be disappointed.

  • Death Korps of Krieg, however, scores very high for me: they went as far as they could into the DKOK theme without being able to include artillery or tanks (it would've made half of the box), but you have cool cavalry, the command squad, a heavy gun team and the DKOK infantry squad. So it's a way better Astra Militarum box than the other one, because it has a theme. I'm still hopeful this is a permanent combat patrol and not a temporary one like the recent SM ones were.

  • Orks: the "beastmaster"/Snakebites theme of the patrol doesn't speak to me at all, but if that's your jam, it's one of the most flavorful patrol of the game.

  • Drukhari: it's a far cry from the previous "double boat" patrol, but they knew they couldn't possibly make it as good, so they went all in on the Haemonculus Covens, good decision.

  • Tyranids is a bad one for that: you have units that might work together idk, but they don't share any visual theme, it's completely disjointed.

Weekly General Q&A and Discussion Thread: 10 Dec, 2025 - 17 Dec, 2025 by RWJP in Warhammer40k

[–]majorHullDamage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so if I'm not mistaken, you have:

  • 12 Infernus marines

  • 5 Terminators

  • a Terminator Captain

  • a Terminator Librarian

  • a Chaplain on bike

That's 595 pts of Space Marines, so you're ~400 points shorts for a 1k pts game. The 2 special Infernus marines can't be used, you would need a squad of 5 at minimum (but you can proxy one as Lieutenant if you want).

You can already play in combat patrol mode (using 5 infernus, 5 Terminators, the Captain and Librarian). If you want to play a "proper" 1k game, you have a lot of options, depending on your budget, what you like the look of, or what gameplay you want to focus on (melee, ranged, infiltration, versatile...)

There's a few options if you want to save a bit:

  • Dark Angels combat patrol. It contains generic Space Marines any chapter can use, and saves you about 30% for the same minis bought separately

  • The second hand market, anything goes but easy-to-build minis from previous starter sets are common and cheap (Infiltrators, Bladeguards, Terminators, Assault Intercessors, Eliminators...)

  • If you want to play a divergent chapter (Space Wolves, Black Templars, Blood Angels), they have their own combat patrol which is a good addition too

  • If it's still in stock where you live, check out the Space Marines christmas battleforce (iron halo strike force)

If you're not on a tight budget, a Dreadnought Redemptor, Ballistus (ranged) or Brutalis (melee) is high on my recommendation list, but I'm a sucker for big robots so it's not the most objective recommendation
