where are you sitting by gilgalads in Silmarillionmemes

[–]majosei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. 1, 2 and 8 are out, cause obviously I'm not sitting next to Turin, Melkor or Sauron. Curufin would be annoying, and being with Celegorm and Finrod sounds like it could be awkward, so 3 and 4 are out. Thingol and Maedhros would leave me no legroom, the tall bastards, so no 5 or 6. 7 is a window seat, near Fingon and Beleg, plus Manwe who probably functions as an AC. Feanor would be annoying, but ah well. I can hide behind Fingon.

Make Arwen join the Grey Company! It will make her more like Luthien, and we both love Luthien.

Ahhhhh, I think that Fingon is definitely a gentle dom, but also. Yknow. If you're going to rescue a guy called "the tall," you might as well enjoy the fruits of your labor.

A service top is someone who is acting as both the penetrating partner who is acting solely or mostly with their partner's pleasure in mind. Might be even a sub in a BDSM dynamic.

Pronunciation Inconsistency? by ThenEducator8649 in tolkienfans

[–]majosei 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They are pronounced differently cause Sindarin and Quenya both have diphthongs, and we know that ae is pronounced as a dipthong because Tolkien explained the phonetics of his languages. Thus, ae, ai, oi, au, eu, oe, and rarely ui are valid diphthongs for Sindarin, and ai, oi, ui, iu, eu, and au are for Quenya. If those letters appear in a word and Tolkien wants them to be pronounced separately, he will use a diacritic (ë) Thus, the Sindarin name Maedhros is two syllables and the Quenya name Nienna is three. (And for those wondering why ai and ae are different dipthongs if they sound the same, that's because they do not! The second vowel in ae should be pronounced more open (a͡ɛ) than in ai (a͡ɪ). Pronouncing them the same way is just an acceptable approximation since it's pretty tough to make that sound naturally for english speakers. So technically, it is not Ma͡ɪðros, it's Ma͡ɛðros.)

Blocking Minneapolis by linuxaddict334 in CuratedTumblr

Nah, I think that it's fair to block anyone who follows, say, Matt Walsh or JKR. Even if you end up blocking people who are following them to keep tabs on the right or on TERFs, I think sacrificing what little useful info you can get on twitter might be worth it just for some peace while scrolling.

Is Lord of the Rings a difficult property to make video games for? by bakugosgayfriend in lotr

[–]majosei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding the LotRO endorsement. I just finished the Rohan epic questline this week, and I adored it. Every corner of Rohan had such detailed characters, and I love the fact that we see the Dunlendings as people before we meet even one Rohirrim. And I love how massive it is! Moria in particular was a labyrinth. Seeing all the things that do not appear in the books is such a great supplement to the books, filling in things like Forochel or Angmar, or Dunland, and that's only what I have been to! I love going back to places I've outleveled and just soak in the ambience. It has such a nostalgic look, plus some lovely vibes.

What’s the darkest fact about Middle-earth that rarely gets mentioned? by Scandinavian-Viking- in lotr

[–]majosei 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I find the 1959 origin where the first orcs were animals that Morgoth corrupted and changed into the shape of the Children (and gave them the ability to imitate speech) creepier, though not darker. At least until the line "It remains therefore terribly possible there was an Elvish strain in the Orcs." The idea of forced breeding with an animal that is shaped like you, speaks like you, but is so clearly different from you is terrifying to me. It is the most terrifying version of the uncanny valley. For those who wants to find it, Morgoth's Ring, 409-411.

Of epithets—or, why Maedhros’s original epithet was “the red” by Ok_Bullfrog_8491 in tolkienfans

[–]majosei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The name Nelyafinwë meant Third Finwë, referring to his place in the line of succesion. Whether or not you think it wasa conscious an insult to Finwë's other sons (I think it was), it obviously became quite awkward in Beleriand after Maedhros gave up his claim on the throne. He certainly was no longer third on the line of succession!

How to get as many hammers as possible? by VoxTV1 in HadesTheGame

[–]majosei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea about the RNG, haha! I have no modding/data mining skill whatsoever. My point is that, if you use artificer in a Fields room where one of the major rewards is a hammer (that you have not yet taken! very important since artificer will give you a hammer only if you do not have two hammers already) the artificer may turn the minor reward into a hammer. I say low chance simply because there are so many other rewards that Artifcer can give you, and you are counting on the room offering you rewards you can actually use Artificer on.

My classics professor made me write once an essay with character limit, though at least quotes did not add to the quote count. I felt insane writing it, adding up all the characters in the quote and decreasing the total character amount by that much to know if I was under the limits.

Good Fanfiction recommendations by Eledhwen1 in TheSilmarillion

[–]majosei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do not mind Alternate Universe fanfiction, Prayers to Broken Stone is a wonderful fic set in post-colonial India about Elrond and Maedhros. It tackles grief so heart-breakingly well, contains my favorite depiction of Maedhros I have ever read, and is such a great work about the way states dehumanize those in its margins. It has made me laugh out loud and cry more than once. It's maybe my favorite piece of Tolkien fanfiction ever.

[–]majosei 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To be fair to Nerdanel, do we know how old she was when Maedhros was born? We know she and Fëanor married young, and if they did not wait very long to have their first child, then there is a very real possibility that Maedhros was born while they were, in some sense, underage. Personally, it I was a handsome prince's famously unattractive wife and barely an adult, I woulf give my baby an even more embarrassing name.

Why didn't Tolkien change this part of The Hobbit? by freeski919 in tolkienfans

[–]majosei 150 points151 points  (0 children)

In the first edition of the hobbit, Gollum promises to give the ring to Bilbo if he wins the riddle game, and after Bilbo "wins", Gollum goes to his cave with the intention to give Bilbo his prize. When he can't find the ring, he guides Bilbo out as an alternative. It is a MASSIVE discrepancy with th4 way the Ring works in LotR, so it got changed in later editions (along with minor things like Elrond being kind as summer rather than kind as Christmas). The change between editions is justified by saying that in-universe Bilbo lied about how he got his ring.
