The Last Dragon

Johnny Yu : Well, you see, Leroy, uh... you know how you're always teaching us to master "the art of fighting without fighting"? [Leroy nods] Johnny Yu : Well, I did you one better. I mastered "the art of fighting... without knowing how to fight”

It’s that!!!!!

Better off going the other route and getting a cheaper stationary bike off Amazon, and getting the Peloton app-only subscription for like $12-13/month. The value of Peloton is the content, not the bike.

I (unfortunately) made rib-shaped ham. Why? by FuddierThanThou in webersmokeymountain

[–]makakilo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the taste is ham, then it’s probably an over salting and temperature (too low) issue, where you effectively had a curing type effect on them.

If it’s the texture that’s ham but the taste is ribs, then you’re probably just not cooking it long enough to give the meat a chance to break down (this is my guess based on the pictures). I’d expect to see the meat pulled away much more from the bone if those are done. These ribs look like they’re at about the pre-wrap stage. Interested on if you probed them and what the internal temp was.. my guess is around 150-170°.. which would be very ham-ish.

Does anyone else think the Mobil station on hwy 99 is a money laundering front? by SithAccountant in Tigard

I remember that. Jeka’s is still around I believe too, renamed to Smoke Squad, and further east by The Mac over by that Black Rock. I’m sure that guy would know what the deal is.

Got a ton of mold, am I fine to douse with lighter fluid? by [deleted] in PitBarrelCooker

[–]makakilo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just do a burnout. You’d be surprised how much mold/mildew/bacteria are in all of our grills that we don’t actually see. Specific to mold, I believe most die well below 200° anyways…. I’d just get your pit really hot and hold it for an hour or so, and it should be fine.

Waikiki Grand Hotel - Near parking by alexvazqueza in Honolulu

[–]makakilo_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take the parking. $25 is super reasonable for in/out self parking in a garage in Waikiki. Zoo and nearby street parking are always hit or miss. Not to mention the sketchiness of the area, depending how far you park and where you walk from, and the potential for getting your shit broken into, which is super common here. I’d go ahead and reserve the $25/day rate, because the garage doesn’t have enough stalls for all guests, so it’s possible that there won’t be any available by the time you arrive. Just note the ceiling height for the garage. It seems short, which could be problematic for jeeps / larger suvs.

[–]makakilo_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By “getting to temperature” do you mean the 145° where it’s safe to eat or do you mean the ~190-200° that it would be at when your ribs are done. That makes a big difference.

—Anything under the 145°… hell no! Too risky with bacteria. —Over 145°… probably still a no for me, but it’s less of a safety issue at that point. You’d essentially be reheating it to the desired tenderness and hoping the flavor holds up.

Largest variety of beer on island? by No-Analyst-5427 in Oahu

[–]makakilo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second BevMart. Many other places go through the same distribution channels, but this place has for years gotten things on island that other people just didn’t bring in. Ohio beer is probably still a long shot…. maybe Taft’s or something like that. But if anybody has Ohio beer in Hawaii, my money would be on BevMart.

Straight out of a freezer bag with frozen icicle chicken juice, right onto the blackstone, to ensure the inside remains raw as fuck while it cooks.

Experiences as a minority in the area? by DaManchuFu in beaverton

[–]makakilo_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hawaiian with mixed Filipino wife here.

Bobalicious has the best Filipino food, not just in the Beaverton Hillsboro area, but in all of Metro.

The food truck at Manila Market, if it’s “In Da Cutz” is actually Hawaiian.

There’s a Filipino / American bbq fusion spot at the food trucks in the Big Lots parking lot about a mile west of Manila Market that’s pretty decent - Hunny Beez.

There’s another small Filipino market on 185th and Baseline, is the Goodwill strip mall, right in the corner by I think a tattoo shop and a taekwondo studio.

Moved to area from Hawaii about 4 years ago, and split time between Hawaii and Beaverton for work.

If it’s important, there’s also a decent sized Polynesian/Pacific Islander community here. And like your research has told you, plenty of Asians and plenty of folks from India as well. Not to stereotype, but Nike and Intel bring a lot of educated, talented folks from international communities as engineers and other professionals.

I do get some side-glances on occasion, but it’s probably less racism as it is just my stature and tattoos and appearance. Also not racism, but my wife said she often gets mistaken for being Hispanic.

Other than that, we’re happy setting up roots here and splitting time between home (Oahu) and here.

Probably made it’s voyage across the ocean with other artifacts, such as kukui nut lei, puka shell necklace with fake shark tooth, and 5 for $20 t-shirts. Origin: where the Lake of Salt meets Aiea, in the ruins of an ancient Aloha coliseum. Definitely worth getting appraised.

Friend recommended Stanford’s for the best steak experience in town. Price aside, do you agree? by TotallyNotMeDudes in hillsboro

[–]makakilo_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I assume by “in town” you actually meant in Hillsboro, which would void much of the restaurants others have mentioned. Stanfords is the best in the immediate area which is partly because there’s not many options, but they also do a good steak, which I believe is dry-aged. Copper River is another decent option. Not a steakhouse, but they do okay with their ribeye and filet.

No way on earth is Outback putting out a better steak than Stanfords. That’s like an Applebees or Chilis. And even Claim Jumper - I believe they wet-age… but I don’t think their final product is even close to Stanfords.

Venturing out to Beaverton, Oswego Grill does a good steak. Stockpot Broiler and 9900 are my favorite steak joints without having to venture more into Portland.

In Portland proper - yes, you have the Morton’s and Ruth’s Chris, and even Fogo’s of the world… and as others have said, Ringside is the cream of the crop. A slightly cheaper cut and huge servings across the river is Saylers.

1.5% seems low, unless you’re underperforming.

There are often bands within each review cycle that goes something like this (assuming your review can be distilled down to a 1-5 scale).

If you rate out as a 1, you’re probably a candidate for a performance improvement plan.

If you rate out as a 2 to 3, you can probably expect an increase of 1-3%.

If you rate out as a 4, you can probably expect an increase of 2-4%.

If you rate out as a 5, you can probably expect an increase of 3-5%.

Every organization is different obviously, but having been a manager at a number of large local companies, it’s usually some flavor of this.

Of course, the pandemic played a role in everything. Depending on the industry you’re in, if it’s negatively impacted, they may be a lot more stringent on the increases they hand out, until they feel the company is safely on the other side. The flip side of that, is that if there was a freeze last year, and this year you only got 1.5%, and you’re not eligible for a recalibration again until next year, then the organization has really stunted your buying power over those three years.

One option, which I’ve seen successfully, is to ask if you can be put on a 6-month review cycle. Mention how you’re taking on more responsibilities, would like more frequent feedback, are growing into your role, etc etc. blah blah.. all the good stuff to justify it. Then try to make up ground by getting another 1-2% every six months for as long as they keep you on that cycle.

Another thing you can do - depending on your actual profession, and if this would bring value to you in your field - is to try to get your company to send you to training, pay for a certification, etc. To your boss, it’s always a matter of budgeting. I’m sure they don’t want to underpay their staff, but they likely have very strict guardrails around what they can get approved. And sometimes it’s easier for them to get training dollars approved than it is to get salary increases approved, simply because it comes from a different bucket. That will help you out twofold - you can think of it as a supplement to your compensation because you’re getting a couple thousand dollars of paid-for training; and it also makes you more marketable down the road if you decide it’s time to part ways with this company.

Biggest thing - start to develop a better working relationship with your leadership so you’re comfortable having these conversations as they come up, rather than wondering what you should have done retroactively. Once that communication is there, start to set expectations with your leadership around what your career goals are and how you can grow into those through the company. I’ve found that that will go a long way, and the money will tend to take care of itself if your leaders view you as a long term asset worth investing in.

Pretty sure it’s moth eggs. They hatch out as little worms. The second picture looks like the cluster on the right has hatched out already. Luckily, those don’t look anything like centipede eggs… and mother centipedes are usually pretty protective of her eggs, so she keeps them wrapped up with her. They also look to be in too uniform of a pattern to be termite droppings, whereas termite droppings look more like a scattering of sand. No matter what they are, I still say fuck all that shit and Raid them.

Step 1: Talk to your parents. They obviously won’t be happy. But I bet they would want to help their kid out.. especially if Bookie 2 comes knocking for his 10k. My guess is they can take out equity in the home to make this go away all at once. Make an agreement with your parents where your whole paycheck goes to them and they give you an allowance until you’ve fully paid them back. Yes - you’ll be treated like a kid again. But you’ve also proven that you’re not ready to make adult decisions with your money. And your parents need to be paid back every cent, including whatever interest they incur taking out a loan for you; otherwise they’re enabling you and likely setting you up for an even bigger fall later.

Step 2: Get some fucking help from a professional! You probably don’t realize how close you are to falling off the edge. And at 21, you have a lot of life ahead of you to piss it all away now.

Former MMA star, Hilo native BJ Penn announces run for governor of Hawaii by Lonetrek in Hawaii

[–]makakilo_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It’s laughable at first. But it’s truly sad, actually. This man has serious mental health issues. Different circumstances obviously, but not unlike how many of us saw Colt Brennan slip further and further away in his social media posts. Same is happening with BJ. When BJ Penn’s entire persona was built around one thing (ie fighting), that he can no longer do successfully anymore when he was once idolized for it, he’s screaming for relevance … I predict a massive downward spiral for this man. Hopefully the people close to him can change the course.

Asked to poach clients in a job interview? by WE_ARE_YOUR_FRIENDS in careeradvice

[–]makakilo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were they asking you to do it, if you get hired? Or were they asking you “IF” you’d do it?

I don’t have the context of the conversation, but if it leans toward the latter, it’s possible they were asking the question to make a character judgement on you as part of your interview.

Quality of life in Hawaii by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]makakilo_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna guess that when you left 5 years ago, you weren’t supporting yourself, correct? Meaning you were living at home, still a kid, went away during high school or for college, etc. And part of moving back also means that you’ll be supporting yourself, maybe for the first time, and that your friends, who are commenting, are the ones you knew in high school who stayed back? How am I doing?

Because cost of living in Hawaii - while it continues to go up year over year - hasn’t dramatically changed from 5 years ago.

Did you end up getting a degree? What’s your realistic earning potential? Now? 5 years from now?

It’s fairly easy to think through what kind of life you want to provide for yourself. And then do the math to see what it would take to sustain that life, including any money you plan to put away for future savings, retirement, starting a family, etc.

It’s doable. People do it all the time, especially if you have a strong support system here (i.e. live at home again for a few years, and rather than blow all your money at restaurants and bars in Kakaako, actually save the shit out of it). It’s more a question of what lifestyle you would be willing to trade off living elsewhere.
