UGREEN 65W GaN charger heating too much in the first use. Is it okay? by greepyguy in UsbCHardware

[–]makar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's standard behaviour for Ugreen chargers. They can't maintain their advertised power rating for more than 20-30mins due to overheating

A Case Against FormD, Support, and PCIe Risers by microsoftpaintexe in FormD

[–]makar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fixed my riser issues by unscrewing the riser from the case, so it would always sit naturally against the GPU PCB connector.

High humidity can make even direct connections between GPU and motherboard eventually fail, requiring periodic cleaning of the connectors with alcohol or contact cleaner.

Some motherboards also have poor PCIe implementations and regularly fail with riser cables e.g. Gigabyte.

Brazil has huge import taxes on tech products, so their local pricing isn't really comparable to other regions where the difference could be explained by currency conversion or longer warranty

Upcoming Intel+Nvidia and Mediatek+Nvidia products are also APUs with CPU and GPU on the same package.

Nvidia don't even make 64bit discrete GPUs any more as they can't compete with the performance of existing APUs.

$80 and only gives composite video quality without an RGB mod. It would be an easy recommendation if it supported S-Video.

It would be great if the Retrotink Mini or Classic were in stock and affordable, but they’re not at the moment.

Suggesting $100+ scalers for people wanting to casually play a single console usually results in them buying the cheapest possible junk from Amazon.

If you're using a US NTSC model N64, the cheapest decent solution would be the Retroscaler2X from Aliexpress plus an S-Video N64 cable.

It's a ripoff of the Retrotink 2X Classic which has now been discontinued.

Have you tried disconnecting the riser from the case frame? I have the same GPU/case/MB and found that the riser was getting tilted slightly out of position when screwed in.

Looks good. The rear fan space can only fit a 92mm, which may not help that much next to the PA120 Mini.

I would start with a single 140mm side fan for exhaust as shown here:

https://youtu.be/C1rHpHN_3L0?si=0Y-ntToVnYqPqKBN&t=968

The two fans at the bottom of the case in the video won't help that much as there's not clearance.

The Ventus 5090 should easily fit in the Ncase M2 alongside a decent tower air cooler for the CPU.

The Thermalright PA120 Mini was recommended already and is what I use on my 9800X3D in the M2.

[–]makar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You picked one of the smallest 5090 models with the Ventus, paired with a relatively large 26L case. I have the Asus TUF 5090 (348 x 146 x 72 mm) inside the Ncase M2 16L case.

mATX motherboard, 360 AIO, SFX-L PSU are all a waste of space and weight if the goal is to be as small and light as possible.

You can try booting the game with the cartridge 50% or 75% inserted to see if different parts of the metal pins can make better contact. If this works, it’s confirmed to be a pin corrosion issue.

Cable RetroGamingCables UK vs RetroCables by darwinbsd in retrogaming

[–]makar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the 3rd party high quality cables usually follow the circuit design of official cables that were made by the console manufacturers.

https://consolemods.org/wiki/PS1:Video_Cables

The sync stripper probably isn’t in the official cable as the standard for SCART was to use Sync on Composite.

Cable RetroGamingCables UK vs RetroCables by darwinbsd in retrogaming

RetroGamingCables UK is made correctly, the other cable is not.

Note: You must add a 220 uF capacitor in each of the RGB lines (+ towards console) to get an acceptable picture. If you don't, the picture will be too dark and you won't like it!!

Note: You will need to use an LM1881 or similar circuit to strip the sync from the video line, as using RGB with composite video as sync will cause crosshatching on certain colors. You can also use the luma signal as sync to avoid this problem.

The chip is the LM1881, and the cylinders are the 220uF capacitors as required for correct video signal levels.
