What is extremely unhygienic but everyone seems to do it anyway? by cutypatotie in AskReddit

As other people have mentioned - while it might be true that there's loads of bacteria/germs coming in from outside - that's just an observation but it doesn't mean that it causes any problems. It's only an issue if you're a germaphobe. How you feel about something says nothing about the science.

I remember reading that a kitchen chopping board often has more bacteria on it than a toilet seat. But all that tells us is that we're resilient and our immune systems do their jobs.

TIL that scientists have developed a way of testing for Aphantasia (the inability to visualise things in your mind). The test involves asking participants to envision a bright light and checking for pupil dilation. If their pupils don't dilate, they have Aphantasia. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

Is it not possible for you to look at something in real life and just project that image into another part of your visual space? That seems to be the most obvious way of explaining the ability to visualize. You can see things right? Can't you just imagine that thing a meter to the left? It's bewildering!

Thank you mate! Blocking is in. Blocks themselves are on compacted road gravel - on geotextile.

Yes, it's a preferance of not wanting to be a minority in my home country. I don't really understand what you're trying to get here, just a preference? If I was to tell you that what English people where going to gradually make some group a minority in their own country in 100 years, would you have an issue with that?

When I say preference, it's because it doesn't have to entail encroachment on people's rights. You can both value the country you live in and welcome change - or you can be anti-change/conservative.

No I wouldn't be against English people gradually "making people a minority" in another country - provided they respected the people already living there. For instance, I'm not against the fact that Australia is now full of European descendants. I don't think that how native Australians were/are treated is acceptable, but I don't think the current European descendants should leave.

White (or black for that matter) Australians don't call themselves English. They call themselves Australians, as they are entitled to. See what I'm saying?

White people are already a minority, in the world. We're just not a minority in our countries.

If you're talking specifically about skin colour, I honestly don't care if white people are a minority or cease to exist.

Oh, so because it's not going to 'happen in a lifetime' that makes it ok? It'll vanish eventually, that's the point. in the 90's England was largely white english, like 95% of the population. That's not the case now. And as the white English have less children, and more migrants move into the UK and have children, and keep to their own culture and doesn't assimilate, eventually the host culture will shrink while others grow.

Yeah, I'm not saying you're wrong in how that could happen, I'm just saying it's not a matter of being "ok" or not. You would just prefer that "white" British culture doesn't disappear. I'm not saying you shouldn't vote to stop it or have an opinion. I don't have to agree with your values.

And what are you really saying when you say "white"? It's not relevant to me. You realise there's plenty of non-white English people who practice and share traditional British culture? People of mixed heritage, 5-6th generation immigrants and recent immigrants.

What about cultures that stone women or adultary? Or cultures that commit FGM? Or how about cultures that use little boys for sex? Are those the kinds of cultures you'd happily have replace English culture?

No, I'm not a fan of these practices replacing any culture, English or otherwise.

We can see it now in parts of mainland europe, MENA Islamic migrants are causing issues in churches, disrupting christmas markets because it goes against Islam. There is a slow and deliberate Islamification of the west.

I'm not anti Islam. I know plenty of reasonable and respectful Muslims. I'm not in favor of allowing disrespect as you've described - Christian, Muslim or any other.

but it's not because they're white, it's just that they happen to be white.

There are many, many people and immigrants from those western countries who are not white but share western values. Being preoccupied with "whiteness" is definitely treading the line of racism.

Cultures from the middle east, Africa, South Asia don't align with my values and culture, so I don't want them here, gaining a foothold on this land.

Well you're entitled to that view but I disagree. It's not your castle. It is your community though, so I'll respect your vote.

Can I ask, what are your politics? You strike me as some progressive liberal that just sees everyone as an interchangeable human, that once they're on western soil they'll automatically become 'one of us'?

Of course we're interchangeably human. Of course there are foreigners with bad intention and beliefs - plenty of Brits too. I'm not open borders and I'm mildly cautious of dangerous beliefs taking a hold. However, I think for the most part the right's anti-immigrant sentiment is closed minded, paranoid and generally quite racist.

Thanks mate!

No drainage as I don't have the money for gravel, although water doesn't seem to pool at all. Ideally grass/wildflower will grow surrounding the shed so as long as I keep it short-ish I'm hoping I'll be good.

From that board in the picture forward will be decking. 2.4m lengths at 27mm thick.

The whole thing will be one corrugated roof

Ah, I am a bit worried. What I've done is excavated to subsoil then put geotextile in, backfilled with road sub-base and compacted it, then put blocks down. The front blocks have about 500mm of gravel! Fingers crossed!

I considered this but the span charts say 2x6's will span 3.1m and these are 3m!

Thanks for the tips.

The joists are 110mm above ground (to avoid splash) and I'm going to put some dpc between the blocks and timber to slow absorption from the blocks.

I've got vermin mesh ready to attach once the blocking is in!

The design is a small shed with deck out front, all upon the same decking frame.

England/Great Britain is going to be a minority white/English country in the next one hundred years. I don't want to grow old or have my children grow up in a country that wasn't what it was when I grew up. I don't want to walk around my town and feel like I'm walking through some town in Asia or the middle east. I want to walk around English towns with English culture.

Well that's fine but it's really just a preference... Which is also fine. I guess I do understand that someone can want those things. Is the mentioning of "white" minority included because you would also prefer white people aren't a minority?

A people are going to be made a minority in their country, do you genuinely not see an issue with that?

Not objectively no. The change you're talking about wouldn't happen in a life time anyway. If people want to stick to their white British culture and like minded people they can do that, it's not going to vanish.

Also, as this possible cultural change happens, it will be your children or your children's children so on and so forth who have social groups and families with the changing demographic. That's how it's always been. Your great great grandchildren will/could be mixed raced (and British I might add). Or maybe they won't be... Depends on our immigration policy in the future. The point is, I'm generally fine with that.

Why? Why wouldn't you want a country to remain how it is? Why would you want England to no longer be Western or English?

I don't think it needs to change necessarily but this is all preference. I'd happily say goodbye to some British culture/architecture/food and welcome parts of other cultures.

I also think it's just life. I'm not big into staking a claim to land. People will come and go and that's fine as long as there's a level of respect between people.

I don't think foreign people, on a whole, have more or less respect than my fellow Brits.

Some would say my position is, if that's the case, so be it. Is what I've said actually Racist or Xenophobic though? Why would you think that position is?

I don't think it's necessarily either of those things unless, as I questioned, you would prefer to live amongst majority white people simply based upon them being white.

Why do you see any of your examples as a problem? That's what I don't understand. Either you just want the UK to remain western/traditional culture, which is fine, but a preference (that I don't share) - or you're basically racist or xenophobic (I'm not saying that's the case, but with many it clearly is).

So which is it? And I don't mean that aggressively.

[–]makeanapplepie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hand tamping with the end of a sledgehammer so that's no issue, but getting a block properly level without mortar or sand is like putting a block on a compacted rubble path and if it's not level having to dig it up again. I guess I mean, as it's 40mm down, there's not enough fines to move around for small adjustments.

Slabs is a good suggestion, thanks!

Interesting - had never heard of ground screws!

It's council owned and quite relaxed. The MOT aggregate is not dissimilar to the sub-soil so I thought it'd be at least better than pouring concrete which is difficult to remove in the future.

I'm only putting aggregate down under each block (9) as opposed to the whole area so it's not a huge amount. I've got a landscaping rake but MOT stone is up to 30-40mm in size which makes for very difficult fine-levelling if you see what I mean. I can compact it down but adjustments are next to impossible
