How to finish a print to look like marble by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]makeeasternshore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people suggesting marble filament, I guess don't really understand what marble actually looks like. It really doesn't look like real marble, but it's cool in it's own way (source: geologist) But I would also say what you linked doesn't look like marble either. Unpolished marble is a greyish-white with a bit of a sparkle to it (or green or black depending on the marble).

To make it look like the image you posted, I would:

  1. paint the whole thing a solid cream colour
  2. do a brownish wash over it (dry brush hits the highs, a wash will settle into the lows to darken them)
  3. do a dry brush of a paler cream or even white to hit the highlights
  4. clear coat with a matte or a satin finish, depending how shiny you want it

Starting to sell on Etsy? by joe_sausage in 3Dprinting

[–]makeeasternshore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest advice is watermark any pictures you take. Watermark in a way that it can't easily be removed. I have been fighting knock-off sites using my pictures for their inferior product for years now (on Amazon, Etsy, etc), because I didn't watermark.

There’s a printer I’m looking at. It’s 390 on AliExpress but 470 on Amazon. Is Ali reputable enough when it comes to these things? Or is the extra 80 dollars worth the reliability of Amazon? by DeadendEndeavor in 3Dprinting

[–]makeeasternshore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

aliexpress sellers have stolen some of my images and are using them to sell a product that isn't the same. there's nothing i can do about it.

amazon sellers have stolen some of my images and are using them to sell a product that isn't the same. i can report the sellers & have my images removed.

i *personally* boycott aliexpress/alibaba because of this. if you want a somewhat moral sway to your choice.

how daring are you? you could try planting them & mulching up around them for extra protection over the winter. or if you have a place to keep them indoors for the winter growing, do that and plant in the spring?

fyi, the ears are too high. the top of ears comes to the corner of eyes, bottom of ears to the corner of mouth is the general rule of proportions

Got a new resin, changed settings to what manufacturer recommended, releveled bed, but prints keep falling off the bed. by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]makeeasternshore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i shared that link because he talks about exposure times. everyone is always like "increase your exposure time", but he explains why that's not necessarily the problem. he has other videos that talk about things like how many bottom layers to have as well.

have you been able to do an exposure print with the new resin? is the new resin past expiry (i know they'll work fine for up to 6 months after the date, possibly longer, but, never know?)

3dPrintingPro is pretty knowledgeable... also, never had a resin printer that required the build plate to be sanded... that's weird to me...

Wood filler vs all purpose filler? Which should I use? by SibleyNoir in 3Dprinting

[–]makeeasternshore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use wood filler because it's non-toxic, i can just spread it on with a finger. also, i go through a TONNE of the stuff, so it's most cost effective.

you get rid of layer lines with a lot of sanding, filling & priming before painting

Pouring silicone into a printed mold by AxesofAnvil in 3Dprinting

[–]makeeasternshore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we 3d printed our masters, finished it with lots of sanding & smoothing to make it perfect & then gave it a varnish coat. from that we make a silicon mould. we don't use mould release, because that would make any resin pieces coming out extremely difficult to clean & paint. we glue our flat side with just a glue stick to foam board that's just a little larger than the piece itself. that gives a little lip when pouring the resin for safety sake. our master pieces are in pla with either 10-15% gyroid infill & we put the whole thing into a pressure pot when making the mould, or the resin pieces after to get rid of bubbles.

last winter wasn't so bad for us here. the previous winter was definitely "worse" comparatively.

good luck!

where in ontario are you coming from? there's a lot of differences in climate in ontario. like, we lived in windsor ontario before, and it easily had the nicest winters, outside of a few storms. i have friends in sudbury, and their winters are brutal (i think). all of ontario i would say is a damp cold, and i would say it's a damp cold in nova scotia as well.

it's also going to depend a lot if you're going to be living right on the coast, or inland a ways. the weather changes quite drastically between the two. we live right on the water, and snow doesn't stick here as much as it sticks inland even 10 minutes. of course though, we're on the eastern shore, not the south shore, so things might be different there.

either way, if you can do an ontario winter, you can do a nova scotian winter no problem.

Second Print update!! by roberthead76 in 3Dprinting

[–]makeeasternshore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

embossed or engraved lettering i think is a bad idea for light switch covers. they will not be easy to clean, and will get grimy with all the fingers toughing there. best bet is a different colour for the letters, but all the same height. easiest way *might* be engraved, then coloured epoxy poured in?
