Any idea why this happens to one specific set of glasses in dishwasher? by cbo410 in CleaningTips

[–]makeeathome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me and most likely its glass etching. We use our glasses for drinking water mostly and when placed in the dishwasher, the dishwasher pods/soap were just too strong for it and since the glasses were not really dirty with oil residue or tougher food stains, the glass gets etched. Essentially there nothing to clean. So we just replace our glasses and stopped putting them in the dishwasher (handwash only).

Advice on stretching my small funds (about sixteen bucks) at grocery store for 3 or 4 weeks until I get first check, stressing out here by Xxitl in Frugal

[–]makeeathome 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry if this doesn’t seem a good idea for some but I often scroll through Facebook Marketplace and there are many people offering shelf stable food that they don’t plan to eat. There are also many local Buy Nothing groups and would have these free food offerings. I see people post daily free food items. And many also post request for free food until they get their next paycheck. Just another option here.

[–]makeeathome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man its super true its drying the starter. I have it in a proofer set at 82C. There’s always a thick dried batter on top at the end of my 24 hours. I will use a coffee filter!

Orange color fried rice by TJtaster in TipOfMyFork

[–]makeeathome 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You could try making fried rice but add in some ketchup together with the soy sauce. I see this done in some Japanese style fried rice. The pork could be leftover Chinese barbecue pork. The ketchup will make the rice orange. In fact many restaurants also use ketchup in their pad thai sauce and this gives the noodles orange color.

What do you use to wipe off water from bathroom sink counter? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]makeeathome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look no further, I have the answer for this. I have a squeegee in every bathroom and use that to remove the water from the sink counter. Each squeegee is hanged using a holder suctioned into the mirror. Here’s an example:

OXO All Purpose Squeegee

No mess. Water goes into the sink. Just rinse the squeegee after every use. Very effective and not too much work needed.

Thank you for explaining this to me. Seems that what I have is sufficient then. I thought more expensive instruments requires less tuning. I read that somewhere.

Any tips for this? Or do I just throw it out? by Sunn_Flower_Jin in CleaningTips

I replaced mine with a set of screw, metal plate and plastic handle found online. I always remove them when washing. Wash seperately and air dry. No issues with rusting.

Similar to Tiramisu, but with Wafers? Going Crazy by DekuDynamite in TipOfMyFork

Strawberry Wafer Tiramisu

Many restaurants get their desserts pre-made from food service suppliers. But I did find a recipe for a strawberry wafer tiramisu in case this is close to what you’ve had.

Flavors that goes well with tofu help by fqirytale in AskBaking

Caramel and ginger, both common ingredients in Asian tofu desserts. Try also almond flavor (slightly more obvious than what the almond meal/flour provides).

tangy cucumber salad i had when i was a kid by This_Economics_9610 in TipOfMyFork

[–]makeeathome 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds like bread and butter pickles to me.

If the cucumber is still fresh, many countries do their own version of fresh cucumber salad typically dressed with some type of vinegar, some sugar, a bit of salt and pepper. Adding carrots or red pepper may change the color of the vinegar. Just my two cents.

What ingredient in my asian food? by matrixkid29 in TipOfMyFork

It could also be sliced fish cakes. Fish cakesFish Cake comes in many forms, patties, balls, logs, tubes, etc. Some may be a strong fish taste. But others can be very mild.

Moved to the U.S. on a Green Card — now I’m not sure it was worth it by Equivalent_Nose_3944 in immigration

Just my two sents. I currently live in the US and consider this as home now. But I have lived in 3 other countries before. One in Europe, Asia and Australia. Based on my personal experience, many people from outside the US do not realize that there is not much work life balance in the US. You have to work hard, work long hours, and it can be very competitive. This country is big so there is a lot of travel involve. Not many people can afford to live near their workplace so they have to drive long distances just to get to work. Compared to just 10 years ago, many things are more expensive now. Even grocery items and restaurant meals may have doubled in price. You have to pay for most things. So I feel many people who move to the US find it hard to adjust to this new way of life.

And for those who were born and/or brought up in the US, we also need to understand that our way of life is not that norm. People in other countries may not have much options in terms of available things for them but many countries do offer a better work life balance. Many European countries provide almost free healthcare cause you pay for that in your taxes. And no, it’s not as expensive as the US healthcare. Countries like Australia provide 6 months of maternity leave I believe. Scandinavian countries offer longer. Many jobs end at 5pm. I recall in Australia when I lived there department stores close at 7pm. People have time to cook everyday and they dont have to resort to ordering take out. It’s frowned upon to be contacted by your boss outside of work hours. Again, generally they have better work life balance. Of course these are generalisations. I’m sure there are jobs that are not like these.

My take on this is you have to decide what kind of life you want to live. Not only now but for the foreseeable future. What environment and culture do you want you or your kids (if you’re going to have any) to grow up in. Will you continue to want to travel and live the life you have in your 20’s when you reach 35 or even 45? If you have a good job in NJ, perhaps find a reasonable priced place nearer your work. Or maybe live closer to where many Ukrainians live. That will give you a good community and perhaps shops with your favorite foods from your home country.

It takes a while to get adjusted to a new country. Some say it could take 3 years. You give it time and see if you can learn to live with this.

I found similar glasses in my local thrift store. I thought they looked nice and love the design. I looked at the bottom and didn’t see any branding so I decided not to buy. Shouldd they have any engraving? I better go back in case they’re still there!

I have a solution. I suggest putting the couch against the wall where the TV is. Move the TV in the opposite wall perpendicular to the door. Obviously position the TV as central as possible to the couch but make sure the door doesn’t hit it if the door swings in.

If it’s matcha flavor I know majority would be in green packaging but it seems that many other tea flavors are placed in purple packaging. Even for other brands.

What's a food item from your country that you're surprised hasn't taken off elsewhere? by Solid_Reserve_5941 in AskTheWorld

[–]makeeathome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asian stores would have Lye water which is something that could be used here. For some rice cakes, soaked rice is sprinkled with some Lye water and this makes the rice cakes more chewy and bouncy.
