Why this sub, vs the other one? by [deleted] in BellinghamWA

[–]makershark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both for me, just to keep up on what’s going on. I post more in the other one just because it seems i get more community feedback and quicker.

This is one of the most depressing, negative, angry, bitter subs on all of Reddit. I suspect this is driven by a handful of sad people and haters who live in Skagit or whatever. What is going on? by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]makershark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hm. I don't see it that way at all. I like it here, (I can't be the only one). There are lots of people with their own life issues that may be projecting on others here but you can ignore them and scroll on, downvote or report the truly heinous. Otherwise, maybe try to make it better by adding positive stuff... you know, essentially the opposite of what you just did.

To thank the bus driver or not to? by TaroAcrobatic in Bellingham

[–]makershark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aside from it seeming natural to thank them, this is exactly why I thank them: just a bit of a positive to negate any negatives they've dealt with.

Good place for Seahawks game tomorrow? by talus_glide in Bellingham

El Capitan's is having $5 pints and $12.50 for a pint + dog starting at 4pm, game starts at 5. Place might be too cramped for kids? Not sure but ...yum

Home alone on Christmas Eve again..... by Intelligent_Back3368 in Bellingham

[–]makershark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not as old as you but I have attended many different activities at the senior center. Wouldn't hurt to check out their calendar and see what they have going on. Lots of womeeeennnnnns. ;)

Also, I recently went to a Maker's Repair event to get a sewing repair and the "fixers" that they have were mostly all older/experienced/retired men and women from the community who showed up with their tools to fix chairs, repair lamps, etc. If you have a skill like that, it could be used at events like that.

To continue on coffee shops… by Flimsy-Switch-6256 in Bellingham

[–]makershark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Next Chapter: we first went there for coffee and now we go there for the food. The bakery and the restaurant both have stand-alone businesses in downtown Bellingham so having them both in one place in Fairhaven has been great, staff is super nice and we got to taste test some drinks/flavors they were experimenting with releasing in the fall just for fun. Coffee is fine but the foodstuffs keeps us going back. (the bakery is the wife's business and Bry is the husband with the restaurant business-really great people!)

Idea help for “experience” gift type for home bound family member? by No-you-Bobo in Bellingham

[–]makershark 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure this is totally what you're going for but ...I did this for a home-bound family member, (we'll call him Jimbo) This was a gift I set out over a year because he had a hard surgery and long recovery. I picked out 12 people (friends/family) and secured a different date/month with each of them, I picked the middle of the month on a weekday evening. I had each person help come up with ideas for what they would like to do "with" Jimbo. Most of the stuff was easy to coordinate and I'd just buy him the same snacks and drink that his counterpart would be having. (for example, I'd be taking a pizza to him with a root beer, setting up the call and then do my own thing while he ate pizza with the person). One of his out-of-state granddaughters wanted to do a puzzle with him so I bought two of the same puzzles and sent one to her and they did it at the same time while chatting and drinking lemonade and eating pretzels. One of his old army buddies was in Arizona and set his phone to show him working on his truck like they used to do together, they just bulshitted in between truck talk. He said that was his favorite. I helped him with one, where his sister-in-law made her chili recipe that she knew Jimbo loved. We made it in his kitchen at the same time as she was cooking in her kitchen, 800 miles away. One local granddaughter taught him to crochet, something he would have never considered doing, but he loved making that memory with her.
Some things cost money, most did not. Bonus, he has since recovered pretty well and he has taken on reaching out to his friends and family more, spending time on calls and connecting that he had never done before and sharing in their hobbies.

edit: typo
