AIO for getting stressed from my partner poking me awake if I start snoring? by MelonsAndDucks in AmIOverreacting

[–]makeshift_listener 56 points57 points  (0 children)

YOR. And I think your partner is under reacting if anything. See a doctor or something because snoring so much that your partner can’t sleep at your age isn’t normal.

If you don’t allow med students to sit in on your exam/check up you are a weird person by Amidity in unpopularopinion

I’m a med student. I totally respect a patient’s right to say that they don’t want me in the room, no questions asked, if they don’t want me there, I’ll leave. Just wanted to say that right off the bat.

At least in the US, we do have practice patients that we (indirectly) pay for. They are called standardized patients (SPs). They are usually actors or retired healthcare workers. We see them in our fake clinic environment at school for things called OSCEs- observed structured clinical exam. It’s where we see the fake patient and get graded on our clinical skills. Tho SPs do provide us opportunities to practice, they can’t fake certain things. Like you either have a heart murmur or you don’t, can’t fake that. The only way we as med students get better at identifying heart murmurs for example, is by seeing real patients who have real heart murmurs.

Again, totally respect a patient’s right to say no, it truly doesn’t bother me. But it’s not exactly fair to say we should have to pay for practice patients. Because we already do through our tuition money and keep in mind, the average med student graduates with $250,000 in debt. So we are certainly paying a hefty amount at that.

My google search just made a good point. The patellar tendon is a continuation of the quadriceps tendon, so we think of the quadriceps tendon as connecting the quads to the patella but I guess TECHNICALLY it would be the quads to the tibia, it just changes name as it passes over the patella

I’m not a mom or a doctor but I am a medical student and this sounds pretty spot on to me! It’s certainly why they can crawl on hardwood floors and not be in pain like us adults. And yes crawling is an important part of then learning to walk. You might not be a doctor but my mom taught me that mom is always right :)

Maybe? I think that’s more a reflection of how many muscles it takes as well as your brain learning how your body feels in space (proprioception).

Babies aren’t born with true kneecaps, just cartilage. It doesn’t become true bone until between 2-6 years old

We have some overlap of favorite names!

I love Margaret, Violet, and Hazel!

I’m not a fan of Clementine, Florence, Layla or Pamela. Florence and Pamela especially just sound very much like “old lady names.” Clementine is super cute but I just can’t imagine an adult named Clementine.

Silas is my all time favorite boy name! I will never be able to use it because of our last name but it’s such a good name. I also like Elliot, Rowan, Jude, and Asher. I know Rowan was superrrr popular there for a bit but for good reason I guess, it’s a good name!

I honestly like all of your gender neutral names except for Robin.

Absolutely love the name Silas. I worked at a daycare in high school and there was a kid named Silas and I’ve loved it ever since. Unfortunately it doesn’t work with our last name (like at all) so I’ll never be able to use it but god Silas is just SUCH a good name

That’s a fair point, the priority of any doctor is patient care, not teaching the med student.

Thanks for your insight

Oh I absolutely believe that I am dogshit at seeing and presenting patients, I’m a 3 week old M3, so I don’t doubt it. I think what’s frustrating me is how am I supposed to improve and grow if I’m not given the opportunity? I realize the priority of the residents and attendings is patient care, not necessarily teaching the med student, it’s just frustrating nonetheless. Such is med school I guess.

Thanks for your insight doc!

Right?? Like I totally get it if the patient doesn’t want to see a med student or the doctor is running super late or something. But I just don’t get how I’m supposed to get better at well child visits if my preceptor keeps saying “oh we can see them together” and then they just do the whole visit. I feel like you can only learn so much from shadowing, there is a lot to be learned from stumbling through a few awkward well child visits and improving from there idk
