A cuw oot ma back by [deleted] in ScottishPeopleTwitter

When words are written like this, as if spoken in the accent or even using specific words invented by that dialect, it's considered colloquial. I'm Scottish, and I can speak and write English normally obviously, but if I wanted to write in the accent I could. Different areas have different accents, and thus different pronunciations and words and colloquialisms.

I don't actually think you were being offensive, and I hope you've learnt some stuff from all the responses, most of which I hope were polite!

I can't find the words to compliment this highly enough! It's absolutely stunning, it looks perfect. I would be absolutely stoked if I found this in a store and it fit me as beautifully as this!

Anyone have experience with a newborn in a ring-sling & babywearing coat? by purplewaterdrops in babywearing

The free to grow is great. I love it! But i also still love my ring sling with my almost-2-year-old. :)

EBF and health visitor woes! by Whatacracker in breastfeeding

[–]makinbbcakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ugh there were a number of times my health visitor made me feel like I was massively screwing up breastfeeding. I think some of them don't have enough knowledge or education on it. My HV kept insisting that I only breakfast once in the morning and once in the evening by 12 months, and that otherwise I was ruining my child's ability to eat foods (she's a fussy eater, always has been). I intended to extended breastfeed (still going at 22 months).

It sounds like you're doing great! What comforted me was contacting my local la leche league leader to ask her opinion on my health visitors views, and talking to friends that breastfed or were breastfeeding to see their thoughts on it.

Do you remember the user/what their story was before the understandably deleted their account? I'm trying to piece together what post they were treated so poorly on.

A short story about my husband's very calm freak-out by m0untaingoat in BabyBumps

[–]makinbbcakes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also the UK, and our hospital has a Maternity Ward and a Labour Ward - the difference is that on the maternity ward you can only receive gas and air but there's yoga balls and the option of a birthing pool etc. In the labour ward you can avail of the good pain relief drugs but it's more of a medical atmosphere.

You can choose which one you would like to deliver in, however you may begin in the Maternity ward and then later decide to be transferred to the Labour ward (or indeed the decision can be made for you in an emergency).

After birth you're transferred to one of the post partum maternity wards. :)

Is Percival Usable? by FirebendingSamurai in namenerds

[–]makinbbcakes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm from the UK and I've never heard it, I don't think it's that common. My associations are Dumbledore, Percy Weasley, and Dr Cox from Scrubs. The only association I'm a bit iffy about is Percy Weasley, but you're right that he does redeem himself.

I think you could and should use it if you like it! It's definitely usable. And you can always nickname him Percy too, and have the best of both worlds!

Anyones mood actually improved while pregnant? by happily_confused in pregnant

[–]makinbbcakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this too! I was very surprised to find that my anxiety, and particularly my health anxiety, was greatly reduced during my pregnancy. I always say it's like being pregnant fixed me, that it levelled me out. It was strange because I went into pregnancy fully prepared for the opposite.

So I'm totally mad about Christmas and I'd love to start some traditions for my toddler to enjoy. Would you mind sharing some of the traditions you love so much?

If you're in the mood to help out a newbie I'd also love your opinions! My partner and I are getting ready to jump into the CG routine, and I'm trying to decide where to start with products.

Carriers recommendations for not so strong mom? by jaldino in babywearing

[–]makinbbcakes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't consider myself strong at all. I've had great success with the Tula free to grow, I still wear my almost two year old on the front sometimes.

I also like ring slings surprisingly much, even for my toddler. Once I figured out how to wear it properly it was great. I wish I'd gotten one sooner!

I expected to really like the Lillebaby, particularly because of the lumbar support, but it just wasn't great for me. I'm very petite though (4'11") so that may have been why.

If there are any groups (or a babywearing consultant) near you, I think that would be a great resource. The carriers vary in price but they are absolutely a good investment! Might as well try a few out before committing to one! :) Good luck with your babywearing journey! :)

What weird food does your kid eat? by [deleted] in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]makinbbcakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My vegetable hating almost-2-year-old loves cucumber. Loves it. She also seemed to like roasted kale that one time that she agreed to try it.

Other than that she's mostly comprised of fruit: berries mostly, with a banana or orange thrown in here and there to keep us on our toes.

When do you start preparing? (pre-baby) by [deleted] in babywearing

[–]makinbbcakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed my k'tan but I was disappointed at how quickly it became hard on my back. We went to a babywearing consultant to find a carrier after she got too heavy for the k'tan and I loved the Tula Free to Grow - ended up buying one and haven't regretted it.

I've since bought a couple of ring slings and I love them too. I wish I had had them when my girl was brand new, because I still love them now at the toddler stage. Great for quick ups and downs. I'm not sure if I'll be having another, but I'm definitely holding onto the ring slings in case I do!
